Abstract

The invention relates to a braking system to reduce/prevent snaking of trailers. The braking system may incorporate an electro-mechanical system. Ideally, if the braking system detects (via a snaking sensor B/ pendulum mechanism) that the trailer is snaking, and if it detects (via a speed sensor A) that the speed is above a predetermined amount (preferably 50 mph), then an electronic monitoring system C would apply the brakes of the trailer alone via a secondary hydraulic braking system D. This would reduce the snaking / oscillations and thereby stabilize the trailer. Further, it would also be preferable if the trailer brake lights E were actuated when the brakes are applied.

Description

24097 1 2 1.
Caravan/Trailer Anti-snake Braking System.
Every Year numerous road traffic accidents involving towed vehicles, i.e. caravans and trailers, occur where no other vehicle is involved.
From experience of towing different types of trailers, and frequent travelling on many different types of roads, it has become apparent that accidents Involving caravans and trailers are caused when the towed vehicle (caravan or trailer) possesses more momentum than the towing vehicle. This usually happens when the speed is in excess of mph and the combination of trailer and towing vehicle are descending a gradient, however slight.
This causes the caravan or trailer to "push" the towing vehicle. Any deviation thereafter from crosswind or steering of the towing vehicle causes the caravan/trailer to oscillate from side to side, commonly known as "snaking". If the brakes of the towing vehicle are applied, the situation becomes worse, usually causing the caravan/trailer to snake to a greater degree, ultimately overturning with complete loss of control of the towing vehicle.
My invention would be an electro-mechanical device that would detect excessive speed (50+ mph) and the snaking of the towed vehicle. This device, when both conditions were present, would apply the brakes of the caravan/trailer only, causing a stabilizing effect and reducing the speed to below 50 mph safely without the towing vehicle's brakes being applied.
The main components will now be described with reference to the accompanying diagram, Figure 1 showing plan view of trailer/caravan.
A. shows a speed sensor.
B. shows a snake sensor.
C. shows an electronic circuit.
D. shows secondary brake system.
E. shows caravan/trailer brake lights.
As shown in figure 1. the speed sensor(A) is mounted in one of the wheels of the caravan/trailer to detect speed in excess of 50 mph. There is a snake sensor (B),mounted at the rear of the caravan/trailer as this is the best position for detecting the sideways motion. This comprises of a damped pendulum device or slide weight that would activate micro-switches
directly or via a magnetic field.
An electronic circuit (C) is mounted on the caravan/trailer to monitor the conditions detected by the speed sensor(A) and snake sensor(B). This circuit has its own 12volt power supply in the form of a battery that is trickle charged by the towing vehicles supply. 2.
The secondary braking system(D) would consist of a hydraulic master and slave cylinder connected to the trailer's normal brake system, that would be actuated by the electronic monitor circuit (C). This circuit would also activate the trailers brake lights to warn following motorists.
In the event of the caravan/trailer exceeding 50 mph and beginning to oscillate thereby, both conditions being present as in (A) and (B),the secondary braking system(D) on the caravan/trailer would be activated and would remain activated until the speed sensor (A) detected a speed below mph. 3.

Claims (5)

CLMHS.
1. A braking system for caravans and trailers to obviate oscillation of trailer or caravan and its towing vehicle.
2. A braking system as claimed in Claim 1 where an electro- mechanical system is employed in conjunction with any existing braking facility.
3. A braking system as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 whereby the system would be activated when speeds in excess of 50 mph and sideways oscillations (snaking) are both present and would remain activated until the speed was reduced to under 50 mph.
4. A braking system as claimed in Claim 2 comprising of components in the form of a speed sensor, an oscillation (snake) sensor, an electronic monitor circuit and a secondary hydraulic braking system activating the normal braking system of the trailer or caravan.
5. A braking system as fully described in above Claims and illustrated in accompanying drawing.
