Abstract
A communications device such as a mobile phone generates a notification signal when a called device has connected to a call initiated by the communications device. The notification may be audible, visual or a vibrating alert. The caller is thus informed when the called party answers or "picks up" the call without having to hold the phone in close proximity to an ear.
Description
Communications Device and Method of Operation The present invention
relates to a communications device and method of operation and, in particular, to a mobile radio telecommunications device such a cellular telephone and related method of operation.
For the vast majority of handheld radio communication devices allowing for transmission and receipt of voice signals, it is necessary for the user to hold the earpiece of the handset in close proximity to an ear so that the audio output of the voice signal received at the device can be heard with adequate volume and clarity and with minimal interference from noises arising in the local environment.
When initiating a voice communications session with a third party, the user of the communications device contacts the third party's device, usually by dialling an appropriate number by way of a keypad associated with the device, and subsequently listening for the voice signal sent by the third party in response to that party responding to the call initiated from the communications device.
In order to readily ascertain that the called party has answered the call, the calling party generally has to hold the earpiece of the device close to their ear while waiting for the called party to pick-up the call at their handset and respond as appropriate.
Waiting for a called party to answer a call, with the earpiece of the handset of the device pressed to one ear does not represent a particularly comfortable manner by which to establish that a call to another device has been "picked-up" or"answered".
Such potential disadvantages are particularly apparent when using a mobile radio communications device such a cellular telephone and which are quite likely to be used while mobile and while often moving through potentially noisy environments.
Moving, whether in a vehicle or on foot, a handset pressed to one's ear is one particular illustration of the potential discomfort that can arise when using currently known devices. Such discomfort is all the more exacerbated if the call is not answered The present invention therefore seeks to provide for a communications device and related method of operation having advantages over known such devices.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a communications device arranged for communicating with a further device so as to establish a voice communications session therebetween, including means for determining when the said further device has connected to a call initiated by the said communications device to enable the said communications session, the said communications device further being arranged to generate a notification signal responsive to the determination of the connection.
Such a device embodying the present invention is particularly advantageous in that, quite separate from the voice signal received at the device, the device is arranged to provide a specific notification signal to the user that the call they initiated has effectively been answered by the recipient.
Given the generation of such a specific notification signal, it need not then be necessary for the user of a device to hold the earpiece of the device close to their ear whilst listening for a response from the recipient. Rather, the user can hold the device in any particular manner appropriate to the nature of the notification signal that is to be generated.
Advantageously, the notification signal can serve to cause the device to vibrate.
It is in this manner, it will be appreciated that the user merely needs to hold the device in their hand to identify that the recipient has answered a call they initiated so that the communications session can commence.
Alternatively, the notification signal can be arranged to provide an audio and/or visual output signal which could, of course, be provided in combination with the vibration of the device. Such a visual output can comprise a flashing signal.
The present invention is particularly advantageous when used with a mobile radio communications device such as, for example, a cellular 1 5 telephone.
As will be appreciated, in determining when the said further device has connected to the call initiated by the said communications device, the communications device can be arranged to determine when the said further device has picked-up the initiated call and/or when a voice signal has been received at the communications device in response to the call.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of establishing a voice communications session between a communications device and a further device, including, at the communications device, determining when the said further device has connected to a call initiated by the said communications device to enable the said communications session, and further generating a notification signal responsive to the determination of the connection.
The generation of the notification signal can comprise generation of a signal causing the device to vibrate and/or generation of an audio and/or visual signal at the device.
Preferably, the step of determining when the said further device has connected to the call comprises determining when the user of the said further device has picked up the call initiated by the communications device. As an alternative, or in addition, the step of determining can comprises determining when the user of the device has responded vocally to the call.
The invention is described further hereinafter, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which comprises a schematic block diagram of a cellular telephone handset arranged for use in accordance with the present invention.
Turning now to the drawing, there is illustrated in block schematic form a cellular telephone handset 10 comprising a body 12 having an antenna 14 extending a short distance therefrom.
Within the body 12 there is provided standard transmission/reception radio circuitry 16 and processing circuitry 18.
In accordance with the present invention, the processing circuitry 18 is arranged to determine when a connection signal has been received at the handset 10 by analysing the messaging signals received from a remote device (not shown) with which the handset 10 is seeking to communicate and thereby identifying when a state of connection, allowing for a voice communication session, has been established.
Upon such identification, the processor 18 is arranged to deliver a drive signal to an output transducer 20 which can comprise any one or more of a vibrational unit, an audio output unit and/or a visual output unit.
In accordance with a particular advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the transducer 20 comprises at least a vibrational output unit which causes the body 12 of the handset 10 to vibrate once having received a driving signal from the processor 18.
Thus, in operation of the response, upon initiating a call to a third party by way of the device 10, and the said third party effectively picking-up the call and thereby connecting to the device 10, the processor 18 is arranged to cause the body 12 of the handset 10 to vibrate by means of the transducer 20 thereby alerting the user to the fact that the remote third party has answered their call and can take part in the required communication session.
Accordingly, it will be appreciated that, once having dialled an appropriate number on the handset by way of a keypad (not shown), the user need not then hold the handset to their ear in order to determine when the called party has answered the call they have initiated. It is merely necessary to identify when the device is, for example, vibrating to determine that the recipient is then available to enter into the required conversation.
The handset can then simply be lifted to the user's ear for use in a standard manner.
It is therefore not necessary for the user to somewhat uncomfortably hold the handset close to their ear whilst waiting for the intended recipient to connect to the call that has been initiated.
Such operation proves particularly advantageous when the user is mobile, and in particular moving in, or through, a potentially noisy environment.
It should of course be appreciated that the present invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiment in that the invention can be embodied in any appropriate form of communications device.
Also, the vibrational, visual and/or audio output means can comprise such output means as currently provided in device handsets for indicating an incoming call.
