Description

DISPENSING CARTONS
The present invention relates to dispensing cartons made from cardboard, paperboard or other foldable sheet material, and in particular to fliptop cartons.
A wide variety of flip-top cartons are known, and the present invention seeks to provide a flip-top carton which can be made in one piece and which will allow easy erection and filling of the carton.
From a first aspect the present invention provides a flip-top carton formed from a blank of paperboard, cardboard or other foldable sheet material, said carton having a dispensing opening formed in at least one wall thereof and a flip-top lid hingedly connected to the carton for selectively covering and uncovering the opening, said lid having a top panel hingedly connected to a top wall of the carton, a first side panel overlying a first side wall of the carton, and a second side panel defined in a second side wall of the carton opposite the first side wall of the carton.
Thus in accordance with this aspect of the invention, a first side wall of the flip-top lid is formed in a side wall of the carton while a second side wall of the lid is arranged to overlie the opposite side wall of the carton.
The second side wall panel of the lid may be defined by a cut in the second side wall of the carton.
Preferably, however, the second side wall panel of the lid is defined in the second side wall of the carton by a line of weakness, for example an intermittent cut, so as to detach from the second wall of the carton upon first opening of the lid. This keeps the lid in its closed position until it the carton is first opened.
The dispensing opening may be formed in a top, side or front wall of the carton although preferably it is - 2 - arranged around a corner of the carton between a side wall and the front wall thereof, to facilitate . alepenslng.
Preferably the dispensing opening is formed at least partly in one or more internal panel or panels of the carton. This allows a more precise dispensing opening shape and position to be achieved.
The internal panels of the carton which define the dispensing opening are preferably hingedly attached to a panel which underlies the top wall of the carton. In a preferred embodiment, the internal panels comprise a first panel hingedly attached to the aforementioned underlying top panel of the carton and a second panel hingedly attached to the first panel so as to underlie the front wall of the carton.
Preferably this second, panel has a locking tab formed at one end which engages with a retaining lip formed on the inside of the lid.
The invention also extends to a blank for making a carton in accordance with the invention.
The invention also extends to a blank for forming a flip-top carton, said blank being made from cardboard, paperboard or other foldable sheet material, said blank comprising a row of panels joined together about parallel hinge lines, said row of panels comprising in sequence: a first top forming panel; a first side wall forming panel; a bottom forming panel; a second side wall forming panel; a second top forming panel, arranged so as to underlie said first top forming panel upon erection of carton; and a third side wall forming panel arranged to underlie said first side wall panel upon erection of the carton; the blank further comprising panels defining a - 3 - flip-top lid, said lid panels comprising: a lid top forming panel hingedly connected to said first top forming panel; a first lid side wall forming panel hingedly connected to one edge of the lid top forming panel about a hinge line extending parallel to the hinge lines connecting the row of panels of the blank; and a second lid side wall forming panel hingedly connected to the opposite side of the lid top forming panel, said second lid side wall forming panel being defined in the first side wall forming panel of the carton.
In this arrangement, therefore, the lid-forming panels are arranged along the row of wall forming panels of the carton which facilitates erection of the carton, as will be explained further below.
Preferably the second lid side wall forming panel is defined in the first side wall forming panel of the blank by means of a line of weakness, for example an intermittent cut.
Preferably a first front wall forming panel and a first rear wall forming panel are connected to the first side wall forming panel of the blank and a second front wall forming panel and a second rear wall forming panel attached to the second side wall forming panel around respective hinge lines arranged at 90 to the hinge lines joining the panels of the row together.
Preferably a third front wall forming panel is attached to the third side wall forming panel along a hinge line extending parallel to the hinge lines joining the first and second front wall forming panels to the first and second side wall forming panels.
Preferably a dispensing opening is formed in the third side wall forming panel and/or the third front wall forming panel.
Preferably a locking tab is hingedly attached to the third front wall forming panel along a hinge line - 4 - arranged perpendicular to the hinge line connecting the third front wall forming and third side wall forming panels.
Preferably the blank further comprises one or more lid front forming panels, preferably respective first and second lid front forming panels, at least one of said first and second lid side wall forming panels being joined to a first or second lid side wall forming panel about a hinge lines extending perpendicular to the hinge lines joining the panels of the row together. Most preferably a first lid front forming panel is joined to the first lid side wall forming panel and a second lid front forming panel is joined to the second lid side wall forming panel.
As stated above, the in-line arrangement of the wall forming panels and lid forming panels facilitates erection, filling and closure of the carton so from a further aspect the invention extends to a method of assembling and filling a carton in accordance with the invention, from a blank in accordance with the invention, comprising the steps of: a) folding the blank about the parallel row of hinge lines to define a tubular body with the third side wall forming panel and second top wall forming panel underlying the first side wall forming panel and first top forming panel respectively; b) closing the rear wall of the carton; c) filling the partially assembled blank with product; d) folding over the first front wall forming panel, the second front wall forming panel and the overlying third front wall forming panel and gluing them together to close the front wall of the carton; and f) forming the lid.
In this way product may very easily be filled into the container before it is closed.
The various panels may be glued together by adhesive applied immediately prior to gluing or at some earlier stage, e.g. by pre-applying contact adhesive to the relevant parts of the blank.
Preferably the second front wall forming panel is folded over prior to the first front wall forming panel.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a carton in accordance with the invention in a closed condition; Figure 2 shows the carton of Figure 1 in an open condition; Figure 3 shows a blank for making the carton of Figures 1 and 2; and Figures 4A to 4F illustrate the sequence for erecting, filling and closing the carton of Figures 1 and 2.
With reference to Figure 1, a flip-top dispensing carton 2 comprises a front wall 4, a top wall 6, a rear wall 8, a bottom wall 10 and first and second side walls 12, 14.
A flip-top lid 16 is hingedly connected to the top wall 6 of the carton 2 along a hinge line 18.
As can be seen in Figure 2, when the lid 16 is open, it exposes a dispensing opening 20 formed around one corner of the carton 2. In fact, as will be discussed further below, the dispensing opening 20 is formed in a number of internal panels of the carton 2.
As also can be seen in Figure 2, the lid is kept in an initial closed condition by virtue of a number of spaced apart bridges 22 of material formed in the side wall of the carton. These bridges 22 are broken when the lid 16 is first opened.
The construction of the carton will now be described in greater detail with reference to Figure 3 - 6 - and Figures 4A to 4F.
With reference to Figure 3, a blank 30 for making the carton 2 comprises, in a row, a first top forming panel 32, a first side wall panel 34, a bottom forming panel 36, a second side wall forming panel 38, a second top wall forming panel 40 and a third side wall forming panel 42. These panels are hingedly connected together around parallel hinge lines 44.
First and second front wall forming panels 46,48 are attached along one edge of the first and second side wall forming panels 34,38 respectively by hinge lines 50 extending perpendicular to the hinge lines 44 connecting the panels together. First and second rear wall forming panels 52,54 are connected to the other edge of the first and second wall forming panels 34,38 along hinge lines 56 which are parallel to the hinge lines 50.
A third front wall forming panel 56 is hingedly connected to third side wall forming panel 42 along hinge line 60 which extends parallel to the hinge lines 50,56, and a dispensing opening 62 extends across the hinge line 60.
A locking tab 64 is hingedly attached to the third front wall forming panel 58 along a hinge line 66 which is parallel with the hinge lines 44.
In addition tabs 68,70, are hingedly attached to the ends of bottom forming panel 36, a tab 72 attached to one end of the second top wall forming panel 40, and a tab 74 attached to one end of the first top wall forming panel 32.
The blank 30 also includes an array 80 of flip-top lid forming panels. This array comprises a lid top forming panel 82 which is hingedly connected to the first top forming panel 32 of the blank around a hinge line 84 arranged perpendicular to the hinge lines 44.
A first lid side wall forming panel 86 is attached to one side of the lid top forming panel 82 about a hinge line 88 which is parallel to the hinge lines 44.
A second lid side wall forming panel 90 is connected to the other edge of the lid top forming panel 82 about a second hinge line 92 which is parallel to the hinge line 88.
A first lid front forming panel 94 is attached to the first flap side wall 86 about a hinge line 96 which is parallel to the hinge line 64. A second lid front wall forming panel 98 is attached to the second lid side wall forming panel 90 about a hinge line 100 parallel to the hinge line 96.
As can be seen from Figure 3 the second lid side wall forming panel 90 is formed in the first side wall forming panel 34 of the blank 30. Also, the second lid front forming panel 98 is formed as part of the first front forming panel 46 of the blank 30. A line of weakness 102 defines these panels such that they are left attached to the side wall and front wall forming panels 34,46 by bridges of material 104.
Finally, a lid tab 106 is also attached to one end of the lid top forming panel 82.
The erection, filling and closure sequence for the blank shown in Figure 3 will now be described with reference to Figures 4A to 4F.
First, the blank 30 is folded around the hinge lines 44 and glued so as to form a tubular body. In particular, the blank is folded such that the second top wall forming panel 40 lies inside the first top forming panel 32 and the third side wall forming panel 42 lies inside the first side wall forming panel 34.
The rear wall forming panels 52,54 and tabs 68,74 is then folded inwardly and glued in position to close the rear wall 8 of the carton 2.
In this state, the first lid side wall forming panel 86 will overlie an area of the second side wall panel 38, as shown in Figure 4A.
The product may then be filled into the partially erected carton through its open front wall, "hereafter - 8 the front face of the carton may be closed as shown in Figures 4B to 4F.
Firstly the bottom tab 70 and front wall tab 72 are folded inwardly and the lid tab 106 folded outwardly, as shown in Figure 4B.
The second front wall panel 48 is then folded inwardly so as partially to close the front wall of the carton, as shown in Figure 4C. A bead of glue 108 is then applied along the inside of the first and third front wall forming panels panel 46, 58 and those panels then folded inwardly and bonded to the second front wall panel 48 so as substantially to close the front wall of the carton, as shown in Figure 4D.
As can be seen from Figure 4D, at that stage the first lid side wall forming panel 74 is still upstanding, and the locking tab 64 overlies the lid tab 106. Those tabs 106, 64 are then folded inwardly and a glue bead 110 applied to the inner surface of the first lid side forming panel74 which is then folded over and glued to the underlying tabs 72,106 and panel 98 so as to form the lid 16, as shown in Figure 4E.
When it is desired to dispense product from the carton 2 the lid 16 is pulled upwardly, breaking the bridges of material 104 holding the panel 90 in the side wall panel forming 34. This allows the lid 16 to open.
The product can then be dispensed through the dispensing opening 20.
After dispensing the lid 16 is hinged back down around the hinge line 84. the locking tab 64 engages under the free edge 112 of the lid panel 98 to loosely retain the lid in a closed position.
It will be appreciated that the carton may be made from any foldable sheet material, but preferably it is formed from cardboard or paperboard. The carton may have many applications, but it will be particularly suitable for dispensing items of confectionery. - 9
