Abstract

An AC voltage regulator comprises a variable inductor 3 connected to a load 4. The inductance of inductor 3 is changed by a d.c motor 5 moving a ferrous core 2. Motor 5 is controlled by an electronic PID controller 6 which receives feedback of the output voltage from transformer 7, thereby giving closed loop control. Energy saved can be recycled by circuitry such as a battery charger connected to terminal 8.

Description

This invention relates to a voltage regulating equipment suitable for use
with mains type? (alternating current, (a.c.))? equipment.
At the close of the last millennium a new municipal supply voltage of 230v r.m.s, was introduced. This replaced the old voltage of 240v r.m.s..
However, the domestics voltage supply fluctuates between? approximately 230v r m.s and as much as between 240 and 250v r.n.s.. These peak values occur when demand is due to be greatest. P'incipally, this fluctuation in supply voltage can be written off as energy loss. Where, work done is implied by dV/dt. In the case of an a.c. motor, for example, this would represent intrinsic work done in an acceleration or deceleration of the motor.
Some of this energy loss is filtered out by the intermittent nature of domestic appliance usage. The presence of a device to ensure that the peal: or r.m.s.
voltage applied to a device is always 230v r.m.s. would ensure that the possibility of energy being lost in this way were reduced to as near zero as, scientifically? possible.
According to the present invention there is provided a voltage regulating equipment designed to regulate an a.c. type voltage to an a.c. load. The a.c.
voltage regulator comprises a number of electrical and electronic components.
The principle components are reactive. Standard. solid state, electronic building blocks are used to provide a P. I. D. controller unit. The a.c.
voltage regulator is a closed loop control device for a.c equipment.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which.
Fire I shows a schematic block diagram of the circuit elements required by the A.C. Voltage Regulator.
The a.c. voltage regulator is principally an inductor centered about a central cylindrical core of lights durable? self lubricating material I 1. As a hollow cylinder this core can house a moveable inner solid core of ferrous material r21 Movement of this core within the principle core causes the inductance of the principle inductor 131 to chaotic. Thence' the voltage across the load 141 may be controlled by way of a d c. motor [51 under the control of an electronic controller 161 designed, specifically for the tasks by a fuliv qualified electronic engineer. The a.c. voltage regulator is a closed loop device with feedback supplied by a feedback transformer [71. Energy saved can be thought of as recycled and useable by connection of circuitry? of suitable Impedance. to 181.
