Abstract
A preservative skin for timber allows for the use of up to 70% of waste mineral oil combined with oxidative drying vegetable oil derivatives and oil modified synthetic resins such as alkyds to produce a binder vehicle with both penetrating and film forming properties. The composition is a low volatile organic compound and can be either solvent borne or emulsified in aqueous media. The skin may further be combined with metallic driers, biocides, rheological agents, cosolvents, water repellent additives and light fast pigments to formulate a range of coloured, high solids, low VOC timber preservative stains These preservative stains range from translucent to opaque and are suitable for use on open grained, durable and non-durable timber, to be applied by pressure, vacuum, dipping or traditional spraying or brushing techniques.

Description
Preservative Stain for Timber The invention utilises waste mineral oils to produce solvent borne and aqueous compositions intended for application to rough sawn or open "rained timber as a penetrating and film forming preservative stain.
The objective of this invention is to utilise some of the thousands of tonnes of waste oil generated in the UK each year. Recovered waste oils after being de-watered and filtered are incinerated, being used as fuel oil or diesel oil substitutes in the power generation or roadstone industries.
Waste oil is hazardous waste and contains polycyclic aromatic compounds, heavy metals and phosphates. Future EU legislation is likely to restrict the quantity of harmful toxins emitted to the atmosphere by existing incineration methods. High capital costs to limit such emissions could affect future disposal of these waste oils.
Oxidative drying vegetable and non-drying mineral oils are not normally combined since both have different properties and industrial applications. The penetrating properties of mineral oil can result in a synergistic effect when combined with vegetable oils and may result in a solution to the environmental problem described above.
This invention allows for the use of up to 70% of waste mineral oil combined with oxidative drying vegetable oil derivatives and resins which results in a binder vehicle composition with both penetrating and film forming properties. The higher the mineral oil content, the lower the VOC. In the attached formulation the solids content by weight exceeds 65%.
Formulated with appropriate driers, biocides, rheology modifiers, water repellent additives and light fast pigments, a range of coloured, high solids, low VOC translucent or opaque timber preservatives are possible with outstanding durability to weather and resistance to wood destroying fungi and insects. These compositions will be suitable for use on open "rained, durable and non-durable timber and can be applied by pressure, vacuum, dipping or traditional methods either as part of an industrial or domestic process on new timber or renovation work.
This patent application is therefore for a preservative stain containing recycled or waste mineral oils from sources such as motor engine oils, gearbox oils, other lubricating oils, hydraulic oil, cutting oils and transformer oils amongst others. This application does not preclude other sources of suitable used mineral oils. 2.
