Abstract

Reinstatements are identified by depositing a device which can through the use of either high or low frequency radio waves receive, store and transmit on request data relating to the excavation and the reinstatement of the excavation in which it is buried. A scanner locates the data storage device which has been burred and data can be transmitted to this device and received from the device by the scanner using high or low frequency radio waves.

Description

24084 1 8 1.
HIGHWAY REINSTATEMENT IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM
Description of the invention
This invention relates to the identification of single or multiple excavations and the subsequent reinstatements of those excavations herein after referred to as "works", which are undertaken in a the street (in England and Wales as defined within New Roads and Street works Act 1991) or road (in Scotland as defined in the Roads (Scotland) act 1984). A device is placed within the works which is capable of storing data relating to those works in what ever form that data may take. Data can be retrieved from the device by any interested party following completion of the works by a scanner which is capable of reading the data stored within the device buried within the reinstatement. This will enable the works to be identified and traced back to the promoter ofthose specific works be it a individual or company. therefore avoiding any doubt as to who is legally responsible for those works.
According to the first aspect of the invention we provide a device which when in use, has the capability of being programmed with data either alpha or numeric, either prior to or after being buried within the works, This device has the capability of transmitting and receiving the data relating to those works by either high or low frequency radio waves.
The second aspect of the invention we provide a scanner/reader which when passed over or positioned near to the works will rekieve the stored data either alpha or numeric, from the device buried within the works and reproduce that data either as a visual representation or in printed form or store it for further transmission via either a private or public telephone network or short wave communications network. Furthermore this device has the capability to communicate with the device buried within the works such that stored Data can be Locked, changed, or retained for future reference. The transmission and receipt of data is by either high or low frequency radio waves.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions as appropriate, may, separately or in combination of such features, may be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof :. . , 2.

Claims (8)

1. A device which is capable of storing within it either alpha or numeric data relating to an excavation and the reinstatement of that excavation.
2. A device as in claim 1 which can transmit by either high or low frequency radio waves stored data either alpha or numeric relating to an excavation and the reinstatement of that excavation whilst still in position under the surface of the highway in which it is positioned.
3. A device as in claim 1 which can receive data either alpha or numeric by either high or low frequency radio waves relating to an excavation and the reinstatement ofthat excavation whilst still in position under the surface of the highway in which it is positioned.
4. A scanner/reader that can locate the device as in claims 1,2 and 3 by the use of either high or low frequency radio waves when the device as in claims 1,2, and 3 is buried in the highway below the finished surface.
5. A device as in claim 4 that can transmit and receive data to the device in claims 1,2 and 3 either alpha or numeric relating to an excavation and the reinstatement of that excavation by the use of either high or low frequency radio waves.
6. A device as in claim 4 that can reproduce data either alpha or numeric relating to an excavation and the reinstatement of that excavation in visual format.
7. A device as in claim 4 that can reproduce data either alpha or numeric relating to an excavation and the reinstatement of that excavation in printed format.
8. A device as in claim 4 that can transmit data either alpha or numeric relating to an excavation and the reinstatement of that excavation by being linked to either a private or public telephone network or short wave communications network.
