Abstract

A network 100 comprises a computer 102 and network devices 104-130. When an updated software version becomes available for the network devices, the computer selects a number of first network devices 104,106 for download based upon the bandwidth between itself and those devices and creates a download schedule informing the devices where they must download the software from. The network devices 104,106 then download the software and check it for errors (eg via a checksum or CRC check). Upon successful download, the computer updates the download schedule and selects a number of second network devices 108,110,112,114 which are to download the software from the first network devices 104,106. This process repeats until the software is cascaded to all of the network devices. The download schedule may be transmitted using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and may comprise of table of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and associated download addresses for each of the network devices. The network device may be a Base Transceiver Station (BTS), an Enhanced Base Transceiver System, a Node B or a Base Station Controller (BSC). The number of first and second network devices chosen for download may be dynamically changed in order to optimize bandwidth usage during the download.
