Abstract
A central data backup facility for data/information (including contact names and addresses and telephone and other numbers, communication device serial and operating numbers and codes, text and other messages, ring tones, digital video clips and photographs, applications and documents) stored in the memory of any mobile telecommunications device (including any mobile phone, cellular telephone, or otherwise separate or combined portable wireless telecommunications device) effected via the mobile telecommunications device's own built-in telecommunications capability enabling initial transfer of stored memory data to the central data backup facility from the mobile telecommunications device, update of previously stored memory data to the central data backup facility from the mobile telecommunications device, retrieval of previously stored memory data from the central data backup facility to the mobile telecommunications device, and retrieval of previously stored memory data from the central data backup facility to another mobile telecommunications device.
Description
240 7457 1.
MOBILE DATA BACKUP
The invention relates to a central data backup facility for data/information stored in the memory of any mobile telecommunications device.
A user of a mobile telecommunications device may lose that device, or it may be stolen or damaged. The user may then procure a replacement device, and contact the central data backup facility to have previously backed-up information from the previous device restored to the replacement device. Users would also be able to backup information before the same mobile telecommunications device is upgraded, integrated or otherwise changed, enabling the stored information to be erased from the device, and later restored back to the same device.
The essential feature is that the information stored in the memory of any mobile telecommunications device may be sent from that device to a central data backup facility, and received back from the central data backup facility to the mobile telecommunications device (or sent to another device) via the device's own built-in telecommunications capability. This invention saves users time, cost and inconvenience in being able to quickly save and restore information that would otherwise be lost, (or have to be re-inputted manually, or otherwise via an individual direct plug-in function).
Data' includes any individual component or combination of the user's address book information (contact names and addresses and telephone and other numbers), communication device serial and operating numbers and codes, text and other messages, ring tones, digital video clips and photographs, applications and documents and any other information received and stored on a mobile telecommunications device.
Mobile telecommunications device' includes any mobile phone, cellular telephone, or otherwise portable wireless telecommunications device that may be either a single dedicated unit or implant, or built into a laptop/palmtop computer, personal digital assistant, camera, calculator, watch or any other device.
The central data backup facility comprises commercially available computer hardware and use of the existing (and any future) mobile telecommunications network to call (and be called by) individual or group users (users) of the mobile data backup service. Dedicated system software to be written will perform the data transfer, storage, updating and restoration functions via the mobile telecommunication device's own telecommunications capability. 2.
The service will operate 2 distinct ways, as follows. Users who purchase the service may subscribe to either the 'manual' (you ring us) or 'automatic' (we ring you) service.
Users of the 'manual' service will call the central data backup facility on their mobile telecommunications device. A number of options will be offered, including (1) initial transfer of stored memory data to the central data backup facility from the mobile telecommunications device (2) update of previously stored memory data to the central data backup facility from the mobile telecommunications device (3) retrieval of previously stored memory data from the central data backup facility to the mobile telecommunications device (4) retrieval of previously stored memory data from the central data backup facility to another mobile telecommunications device.
Storage and retrieval functions will be activated by a series of mobile telecommunications device figure, and/or character and/or symbol and/or voice and/or other inputs.
Having completed initial registration procedures, users of the 'automatic' service will be called on their mobile telecommunications device by the central data backup facility at pre-determined intervals (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly) and the update of previously stored memory data to the central data backup facility from the mobile telecommunications device to the central data backup facility will be effected by a series of mobile telecommunications device figure, and/or character and/or symbol and/or voice and/or other inputs, or alternatively automatically with no user input required.
In the event of the mobile telecommunications device being turned off, out of range, engaged or otherwise unavailable, the central backup facility will effect pre-determined redial procedures.
To effect retrieval of previously stored memory data from the central data backup facility to the mobile telecommunications device, or retrieval of previously stored memory data from the central data backup facility to another mobile telecommunications device, a user will call the central data backup facility on their mobile telecommunications device (or replacement device) and effect retrieval functions by a series of mobile telecommunications device figure, and/or character and/or symbol and/or voice and/or other inputs.
