Abstract
A grilling assembly 10 is mounted over the hot bed or grate B of a barbecue. The grilling assembly 10 comprises an open rectangular frame having a series of rotary support bars 14 for sausages extending across it. A housing 16 is mounted to one side of the frame and encloses a drive mechanism for rotating the bars 14 of the assembly. The drive mechanism comprises a large-diameter gear wheel 18 meshed with a small-diameter gear wheel 20 on the end of one of the rotary support bars 14. The housing 16 projects downwardly from the frame and receives heat radiated from the burning hot bed. As bimetallic strip 24 heats up, it coils turning the gear wheel 26 and 18 and consequently the rotary support bars 14 of the assembly.
Description
GRILLING ASSEMBLY
The present invention relates to a grilling assembly for a barbecue and in particular to an assembly which will turn sausages.
A number of different arrangements have been proposed hitherto for turning sausages on a barbecue grill, so that the sausages are heated and cooked evenly over their circumference.
These arrangements are variously complicated, expensive, difficult to use or of limited effectiveness.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a grilling assembly for use with a barbecue, the assembly comprising a series of bars for supporting sausages, the bars being coupled together for rotation around their respective axes, and driving means responsive to heat from the barbecue, for turning the support bars.
The driving means may comprise a bimetallic strip arranged, as it is heated, to transmit rotary drive to the support bars. For example, the bimetallic strip may be spirally wound, or coiled, with one end coupled to a rotary member so that the latter is turned as the bimetallic strip becomes either more tightly or less tightly coiled, as it is heated.
Instead, the driving means may comprise an air-filled or gas-filled enclosure arranged, upon expansion of the air or gas within it, to cause rotary movement of the support bars of the grilling assembly.
Preferably the rotary support bars are coupled together, for rotation, by an endless belt or chain trained around them. Preferably a gear wheel on one of the rotary support bars is meshed with a larger gear wheel, which is driven by a prime mover (e.g. the bimetallic element or expending gas enclosure mentioned above).
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of a rotary grilling assembly for mounting over the hot bed of a barbecue; and FIGURE 2 is a similar view of the grilling assembly, including an enlarged-scale side view of an operating mechanism of the assembly.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a grilling assembly 10 for mounting over the hot bed or grate B of a barbecue. The grilling assembly 10 comprises an open rectangular frame 12 having a series of rotary support bars 14 extending across it and having their opposite ends supported, for rotation of the individual bars 14 around their own axes, by the opposite sides of the frame 12. A housing 16 is mounted to one side of the frame 12, and encloses a drive mechanism for rotating the bars 14 of the assembly. This drive mechanism comprises a large-diameter gear wheel 18 meshed with a small- diameter gear wheel 20 on the end of one of the rotary support bars 14. An endless drive chain 22 is trained around gear wheels on the ends of all of the rotary support bars 14, so that all of the rotary bars 14 are turned, in the same direction as each other, as the large gear wheel 18 turns. The drive mechanism further comprises a spirally-wound or coiled bimetallic strip 24, the inner end of this coiled strip being coupled to a small-diameter gear wheel 26 which is meshed with the large gear wheel 18.
The housing 16 of the drive mechanism projects downwardly from the frame 12 of the grilling assembly and its inwardly-facing side will, in use, receive heat radiated from the burning hot bed of the barbecue. As the bimetallic strip 24 heats up, it coils more tightly and, in doing so, turns the gear wheel 26: this turns the large gear wheel 18 and so turns the rotary support bars 14 of the assembly. Sausages supported by the rotary bars 14 are accordingly slowly turned, and therefore heated and cooked over their entire peripheries by the burning hot bed of the barbecue.
Claims (8)
- Claims 1. A grilling assembly for use with a barbecue, the assemblycomprising a series of bars for supporting sausages, the bars being coupled together for rotation around their respective axes, and driving means responsive to heat from the barbecue, for turning the support bars.
- 2. A grilling assembly according to claim 1, wherein the driving means comprises a bimetallic strip arranged which, as it is heated, transmits rotary drive to the support bars.
- 3. A grilling assembly according to claim 2, wherein the bimetallic strip is spirally wound, or is coiled, with one end coupled to a rotary member so that the latter is turned as the bimetallic strip becomes either more tightly or less tightly coiled, as it is heated.
- 4. A grilling assembly according to claim 1 wherein the driving means comprises an air-filled or gas-filled enclosure arranged, such that upon expansion of the air or gas within the enclosure, there is caused rotary movement of the support bars of the grilling assembly.
- 5. A grilling assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the rotary support bars are coupled together, for rotation, by an endless belt or chain trained around them.
- 6. A grilling assembly according to claim 5, wherein a gear wheel on one of the rotary support bars is meshed with a larger gear wheel, which is driven by a prime mover.
