Abstract
A surgical instrument (1) comprising a body (3) having a recess (4), a first cutting member (7) and a second cutting member (8), the first and second cutting members (7, 8) being located in the recess (4). Preferably, the first cutting member (7) cuts in a first direction and the second cutting member (8) cuts in a second direction, the first direction being different, and preferably opposed to, the second direction.
Description
A SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
Many types of surgical instruments are known for cutting through various tissues. Many of these instruments have an exposed blade for cutting tissue. As the blades are very sharp, there are many accidents arising from the use of such instruments, both in surgery itself and whilst the instruments are being otherwise handled, for example during cleaning and sterilization.
There exists a need to provide a safer surgical instrument.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved surgical instrument.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a surgical instrument comprising a body having a recess, a first cutting member and a second cutting member, the first and second cutting members being located in the recess.
Preferably, the first cutting member is for cutting in a first direction and the second cutting member is for cutting in a second direction and the first direction is different from the second direction.
Conveniently, the first direction is at least partially opposed to the second direction.
Advantageously, the body is substantially planar.
Preferably, the external dimension of the recess is less than the internal dimension of the recess.
Conveniently, the first and second cutting members comprise first and second blades respectively.
Advantageously, the first and second cutting members are located on a detachable member.
Preferably, the first and second cutting members each have a curved cutting edge.
Conveniently, each curved cutting edge is concave.
Advantageously, the instrument further comprises a handle r portion.
Preferably, the instrument comprises metal.
Conveniently, the instrument comprises stainless steel.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying figure in which: FIGURE 1 is a schematic illustration of a surgical instrument in accordance with the present invention.
A surgical instrument is shown generally at 1 having an elongate handle 2 leading to a head 3 of substantially oval outline. The head 3 is relatively thin giving a substantially planar shape.
The long axis of the substantially oval head 3 is at an angle to the axis of the handle 2. On the side of the head 3 facing the handle 2 there is provided a recess 4 having an opening 5 at the edge of the head 3 leading to an open internal area 6. The external dimension of the recess 4 is greater than the internal dimension of the recess. In other words, the width of the opening 5 is smaller than the diameter of the internal area 6 of the recess 4. The opening 5 of the recess 4 is defined by two prong-like points on the body 3.
The recess 4 is provided with two cutting edges 7 and 8.
The first cutting edge 7 is located towards the end of the area 6 of the recess 4 away from the handle 2. The second cutting edge 8 is located towards the end of the area 6 of the recess 4 nearest the handle 2.
The cutting edges 7 and 8 each have a curved concave cutting edge facing in towards the area 6. The first cutting edge 7 is suitable for cutting in a direction along the long axis of the body 3 towards the handle 2, whereas the second cutting edge 8 is suitable for cutting in a direction along the long axis of the body 3 away from the handle 2.
The whole instrument is made out of stainless steel. In other embodiments, the cutting edges 7 and 8 and the remainder of the surgical instrument 1 may each be made of other materials suitable for use in surgery.
In use, the instrument 1 is manosuvred so that tissue to be cut is located in the area 6 of the recess 4. The instrument can then be moved either in a first direction away from the first edge 7 towards the handle 2, or in a second direction away from the second edge 8 away from the handle 2.
The substantially enclosed nature of the instrument 1 ensures that accidents involving the first and second edges 7 and a are minimized.
In other embodiments, the head 3 may be positioned substantially along the axis of the handle 2, or in other directions.
The first and second cutting edges 7 and 8 may both be located on a single replacement blade.
