Abstract

The mailer comprises a printed sheet which has three portions 18,20 and 22 and which is foldable into envelope form along lines 14,16. It has glue bearing portions 24,28 such that when it is folded into envelope form it is sealed to provide a first envelope portion. It also has a second set of glue bearing portions 44,46 which when sealed create a second envelope portion within the first. Information in pre-printed region 10 may be a name and address; that in pre-printed region 12 may be a personal identification number (PIN). Opening the mailer by tearing along lines of weakness 40,42 results in separation of first and second portions, separating the PIN from the address information.

Description

24060;]
IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO MAILERS
This invention relates to mailers, more particularly, though not exclusively, one-piece mailers.
Mailers are generally used in offices and other business establishments.
In one form they comprise a document on which information can be printed, for example by a computer printer, and which is designed to be folded into, and sealed in, the form of a closed envelope. The document may contain pre-printed data to which specific information may be added, as appropriate, subsequently by suitable printing means. Such mailers are hereinafter referred to as "of the kind described".
According to the present invention there is provided a mailer of the kind described comprising a sheet of paper or like material which is able to receive printing, is foldable into an envelope form, has glue bearing portions such that when the sheet is folded into the envelope form, the sheet is sealed in the envelope form to provide first and second envelope portions.
Preferably, detachment means is provided to enable the glue bearing portions to be detached for subsequently opening the sealed first and second envelope portions. Preferably the detachment means is arranged such that the first and second envelope portions become separated from each other upon opening of the first and second envelope portions. The detachment means preferably comprises lines of weakening formed in the sheet alongside the glue bearing portions.
A first set of lines of weakening may be associated with first glue bearing portions to define the first envelope portion. A second set of lines of weakening may be associated with second glue bearing portions to define the second envelope portion.
First information relating to the identity of a recipient of the mailer may be associated with, conveniently by printing upon the first envelope portion. The first information may be enclosed within the first envelope portion. Second information, which may be confidential information, such as information relating to personal details of the recipient of the mailer may be associated with, again conveniently by printing upon, the second envelope portion. The second information may be enclosed within the second envelope portion. The first information may be a name and address, for example, of the recipient and the second information may be a bank account PIN (Personal Identification Number), for example, of the recipient. Advantageously for security purposes, once the mailer has been opened by detachment of the first and second glue bearing portions, the first and second envelope portions may be discarded separately such that association of the first information with the second information by an unauthorised person is prevented. For example, association of the bank account PIN number of a recipient with the recipient's name and address is prevented.
Preferably the second envelope portion is provided within the first envelope portion. The second glue bearing portions may be provided within the first glue bearing portions. The first information may be provided on an outer surface of the first envelope portion and the second information may be provided on an inner surface of the second envelope portion.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a first, side view of a mailer; Figure 2 shows a second, opposite, side view of the mailer.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a mailer is provided which is in one piece and includes a first pre-printed region 10 and a second pre-printed region 12, to which specific information may be added, as appropriate, by means of a laser or inkjet printer. Although the mailer is able to receive laser or inkjet printing, other types of printer may be used to add the specific information. The specific information provided in the first pre- printed region 10 is a name and address of the recipient of the mailer and the specific information provided on the second pre-printed region 12 is a bank account PIN (Personal Identification Number) of the recipient.
The mailer is rectangular and includes first and second fold lines 14, 16 extending perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the mailer to provide first, second and third rectangular portions 18, 20, 22 of the mailer which are substantially equal in their dimensions. The first preprinted region containing the name and address information is provided on the first side of the third portion 22 and the second pre-printed region 12 containing the PIN information is provided on the first side of the second portion 20 of the mailer.
A first set of glue bearing portions comprises first rectangular glue bearing portions 24, on the first side of the mailer, which extend parallel to the fold lines 14, 16 adjacent an edge 26 of the first portion 18 which is distant from the first fold line 14. Corresponding first rectangular glue bearing portions 24 are also provided extending parallel and adjacent to the fold line 16 on the second portion 20 of the mailer such that if the first side of the first portion 18 of the mailer is folded about the fold line 14 onto the first side of the second portion 20, the first rectangular glue bearing portions 24 on the first and second portions 18, 20 overlap each other.
Figure 1 shows first rectangular glue bearing portions 24 in the form of two pairs of rectangular portions but these may be provided in any suitable configurations. For example, the glue bearing portions may be provided as one pair or more than two pairs and they may be nonrectangular.
The first set of glue bearing portions further comprises second rectangular glue bearing portions 28 on the first side of the mailer which extend perpendicularly to the first glue bearing portions 24 and adjacent to edges 30, 32 of the mailer on the first and second portions 18, 20. The second glue bearing portions 28 are staggered and arranged in pairs such that if the mailer is folded about the fold line 14 as described above, the second glue bearing portions 28 on the first and second portions 18, 20 will overlap each other.
The first set of glue bearing portions further comprises third rectangular glue bearing portions 34, Figure 2, on the second side of the mailer, extending parallel to the fold lines 14, 16 adjacent an edge 36, of the third portion 22, which is distant from the second fold line 16.
Corresponding third rectangular glue bearing portions 34 are also provided on the second portion 20 of the mailer extending parallel and adjacent to the fold line 14 such that if the second side of the third portion 22 is folded about the fold line 16 onto the second side of the second portion 20, the third rectangular glue bearing portions 34 on the second and third portions 20,22, overlap each other.
As shown in Figure 2, the first set of glue bearing portions further comprises fourth rectangular glue bearing portions 38 on the second side of the mailer which extend perpendicularly to the third glue bearing portions 34 and adjacent to edges 30, 32 of the mailer on the second and third portions 20,22. The fourth glue bearing portions 38 are staggered and arranged in pairs such that if the mailer is folded about the fold line 16 as described above, the fourth glue bearing portions 38 on the second and third portions 20, 22 will overlap each other.
When the mailer is folded, the first set of glue bearing portions forms a first envelope.
A first set of lines of weakening is associated with the first set of glue bearing portions. The lines of weakening are in the form of perforations which allow the mailer to be manually torn along these lines. The first set of lines of weakening comprises a first pair of perforation lines 40, Figure 1, adjacent and parallel to the innermost second and fourth rectangular glue bearing portions 28, 38 along the whole lengths of the edges 30,32 such that tearing along the first pair 40 of perforation lines leads to detachment of the second and fourth glue bearing portions 28, 38 from the rest of the mailer.
The first set of lines of weakening further comprises a second pair 42 of perforation lines, Figure 1, adjacent and parallel to the first glue bearing portions 24. The second pair 42 of perforation lines extends between the first pair 40 of perforation lines such that tearing along the second pair 42 of perforation lines leads to detachment of the first glue bearing portions 24 from the rest of the mailer.
A second set of glue bearing portions is arranged within the first set to form a second envelope once the mailer is folded in use. Referring to Figure 1, the second set of glue bearing portions comprises fifth pairs 44 of rectangular glue bearing portions. The fifth glue bearing portions 44 are parallel and adjacent to the first pair 40 of perforation lines, and extend substantially from the second pair 42 of perforation lines. The fifth glue bearing portions 44 are provided on the first side of the first and second portions 18, 20 of the mailer such that they overlap when the mailer is folded along fold line 14 as previously described to form sides of a second envelope within the first envelope. A sixth pair of rectangular glue bearing portions 46 extend perpendicularly to the fifth pair 44. The sixth pair 46 of glue bearing portions is adjacent to the second pair 42 of perforation lines such that when the mailer is folded about fold line 14 as described above, the sixth glue bearing portion 46 on the first portion 18 of the mailer overlaps the corresponding sixth glue bearing portion on the second portion 20 of the mailer.
A second set of lines of weakening, in the form of perforation lines, is provided to detach and open the second envelope formed by the glue portions 34, 44, 46 once the first set of lines of weakening 40, 42 have been torn along. The second set of lines of weakening comprises a third pair of perforation lines 48, Figure 1, which are provided adjacent and parallel to the fifth glue bearing portions 44 on the first and second portions 18,20 of the mailer and a fourth pair of perforation lines 50, one of which is provided adjacent and parallel to the third glue bearing portions 34 on the second portion 20 and the other of which is correspondingly provided on the first portion 18 such that the perforation lines 50 overlie one another when the mailer is folded about fold line 14.
Tearing along the fourth pair of perforation lines 50 leads to detachment of the first and second portions 18, 20 from the third portion 22 of the mailer whilst the third glue bearing portions 34 on the third 22 and second 20 portion remain attached together. The remainder of the first and second portions 18, 20 constitutes the second envelope which is opened by tearing along the third pair of perforation lines 48 to reveal the PIN printed on the first side of the second portion 20.
The address 10 information on the third portion 22 is thus separated prior to discovery of the PIN 12 information and may be discarded separately too.
Suitable security patterns 52 are provided on the first side of the first portion 18 and the second side of the first portion 18 of the mailer.
Various modifications may be made to the present invention without departing from its scope. For example, different shapes and configurations of glue bearing portions may be provided to form first and second envelopes which are separated during opening of the envelopes.
The security patterns may be of various sizes and shapes and may be provided at different positions, as required.
