Description

Apparatus for dispensing liquid infant feed formula This invention relates
to apparatus for dispensing a quantity of water and a quantity of infant feed powder or granules to produce a desired quantity of liquid infant feed formula. The invention is particularly useful for dispensing a quantity of liquid infant feed formula into an infant feed bottle.
Infant feed formula is typically available as powder or granules to be mixed with water or as a prepared liquid formulation. Prepared liquid formulations can be conveniently used when it is difficult to prepare formula from powder and water, for example when travelling, but these liquid formulations are more expensive than powdered products and are not used as commonly as powder or granules. Infant feed formula may be whey based, casein based or soya based.
Powdered infant feed products are used in the preparation of liquid infant feed formula by metering powder with a measuring spoon into a sterile feeding bottle, adding cooled boiled water, and shaking the bottle to mix the formula. The measuring spoon is normally provided with the powder, and the volume of the cavity of the spoon corresponds to the volume of powder to be mixed with a specified volume or weight of water. For example, an infant feed powder may specify one level measuring spoon of powder to be mixed with one fluid ounce of water. When using powdered infant feed it is critical that the correct water to powder ratio is observed to ensure that the nutritional value of the formula is correct. Difficulties arise when metering the powder as a knife- edge should be used to accurately level a spoonful which can make the metering process messy, inaccurate and may compromise the sterility of the preparation apparatus.
Furthermore, it is important to count the correct number of spoonfuls of powder, which is easier said than done in light of likely disturbances, in particular those emanating from the intended recipient of the infant feed formula, who is commonly hungry and hence in an agitated state.
There are numerous manufacturers of infant feed powder who each may produce a range of infant feed powder products. For each product the volume of powder to water ratio and/or weight of powder to water ratio may differ. Prior art automated dispensers of infant feed powder/liquid do not adequately address the issue of the varying ratio of weight/volume of powder to water. Also, the physico-chemical nature of infant feed powder is such that accurate dispensing of a predetermined amount of powder is quite difficult.
It is therefore an aim of the present invention to provide apparatus for metering a quantity of powder and a quantity of water to produce a desired quantity of correctly diluted liquid infant feed formula.
One aspect of the present invention provides apparatus for preparation of a liquid infant feed formula from infant feed powder and water, the apparatus comprising weighing means for determining a change in weight of a container for the liquid infant feed formula when powder is added to the container, to determine the weight of added powder, and means for calculating a required amount of water based on the weight of the added powder.
Preferably first dispensing means are provided for dispensing the infant feed powder into the container for the liquid infant feed formula.
Preferably control means are provided to control the first dispensing means to dispense an amount of powder approximately equal to a predetermined amount.
Preferably the control means are adapted to control the first dispensing means in response to the change in weight of the container determined by the weighing means to control the amount of powder dispensed.
Preferably means are provided for a user to input a desired amount of powder to be dispensed or liquid infant feed formula to be prepared.
Preferably the means for calculating the required amount of water comprises means for storing one or more ratios of infant feed powder to water.
Preferably means is provided for a user to select a ratio. In one embodiment means is provided for a user to input a ratio into the storing means.
In accordance with another aspect of the invention second dispensing means are provided for dispensing water into the container for the liquid infant feed formula.
Preferably control means are provided for controlling the second dispensing means to dispense the calculated amount of water.
Preferably means is provided for communicating instructions to a user. These may comprise a display or an audio speaker.
In accordance with another aspect of the invention there is provided apparatus for the preparation of a liquid infant feed formula, the apparatus comprising first dispensing means for dispensing infant feed powder into a container for the liquid feed formula, weighing means for determining, in use, the change in weight when the powder is added to the container, means for calculating a required amount of water based on the change in weight, means for dispensing the required amount of water into the container.
In accordance with another aspect of the invention there is provided apparatus for the preparation of a liquid infant feed formula, the apparatus comprising first dispensing means for dispensing infant feed powder into a container, second dispensing means for dispensing water into the container, weighing means for determining a change in weight of the container and its contents when the powder and/or the water is added to the container.
Other aspects and preferred features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying claims. The invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a block diagram of the components of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a partially cut-away perspective view of an embodiment of the present invention incorporating the components of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a process flow chart for a dispensing operation of the embodiment of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a process flow chart for a calibration operation of the embodiment of Figure 1.
Figure 1 is a block diagram of the elements of an embodiment of the invention.
A compartment for powder 1 and a compartment for water 3 are in communication with a powder dispenser 5 and a water dispenser 7 respectively, which are in turn controlled by a microprocessor based controller 9. An input device 11 is provided which can send a signal to the controller 9. The input device 11 comprises a means for determining the desired quantity of infant feed formula and a trigger means. The means for determining the desired quantity may be a dial or slider or a set of buttons representing typical desired quantities of infant feed formula, for example 40z, 60z, 80z etc.. The trigger means may be a switch which is operated after the desired quantity of infant feed formula has been set.
Weighing scales 13 are provided to monitor the weight of the infant feed bottle and its contents, and the measured weight is in turn monitored by the controller 9.
When the trigger means is activated, the weight of the infant feed bottle 15 is measured by the scales 13 and recorded by the controller 9. The controller 9 calculates the target weight of powder required to make up the desired quantity of infant feed formula. The controller 9 activates the powder dispenser 5 to dispense an amount of powder approximately equal to the target weight of powder from the compartment for powder 1 into the infant feed bottle 15. The scales 13 monitor the change in weight of the infant feed bottle 15, corresponding to the weight of powder dispensed into the infant feed bottle 15 and the controller 9 continues to operate the powder dispenser 5 until the approximate target weight of powder is dispensed into the infant feed bottle 15.
The final weight of powder in the infant feed bottle 15 is calculated by the controller 9, by comparing the weight of the infant feed bottle 15 and powder to the weight of the empty infant feed bottle 15, and the controller 9 calculates the exact weight of water to be added to the powder to produce infant feed formula of the correct concentration, based on the powder to water weight ratio of the powder. This ratio is stored in memory in the controller 9 and may be pre-programmed for commonly available infant feed powders, or the apparatus may be calibrated by the user for a specific powder, as will be described below.
The controller 9 activates the water dispenser 7 to dispense water from the compartment for water 3 into the infant feed bottle 15. The water is dispensed at the correct temperature i.e. between 20 and 30 degrees centigrade. The scales 13 monitor the change in weight of the infant feed bottle 15, corresponding to the weight of water dispensed into the infant feed bottle 15 and the controller 9 continues to operate the water dispenser 5 until the correct weight of water is dispensed.
The infant feed bottle 15 may then be removed, a teat and lid attached and the bottle shaken to mix the powder and water to complete preparation of the liquid infant feed formula.
An output device 12 such as a display is used to communicate information to the user of the apparatus such as operating or calibration instructions.
Figure 2 is a partially cut-away perspective view of an embodiment] 7 of the present invention. There are two sections which have been cut-away 19 showing the compartment for powder 1 and the compartment for water 3. These compartments are accessed by removing the lid 25.
An infant feed bottle 15 is placed below the outlets of the powder and water dispensers (not shown), which are located above the pan of an electronic scale 13. A dial 21 is used to set the desired quantity of liquid infant feed formula. After the dial 21 has been set a push-switch 23 is operated to initiate the dispensing process. The controller 9 (not shown) records the weight of the empty infant feed bottle 15 on the scale 13 and calculates the target weight of powder to be dispensed into the infant feed bottle 15 and operates the powder dispenser 5. The target weight of powder is dispensed by the powder dispenser 5 from the compartment for powder 1 into the infant feed bottle 15. It is not critical that the actual weight of dispensed powder matches exactly the required weight of powder, rather it is important that the correct powder to water ratio is observed to ensure that the infant feed formula has the correct nutritional value. Therefore, once the powder has been dispensed the actual weight of dispensed powder is recorded by the controller 9 and the controller 9 then calculates the precise weight of the water to be dispensed. In summary, the method employed is to calculate the target weight of powder, to crudely dispense this weight of powder, and to then accurately dispense the water based on the actual weight of powder which has been dispensed. This may result in more than the desired quantity of liquid infant feed formula being dispensed, but this is preferable to liquid infant feed formula of the wrong concentration.
One advantage of this approach is that the physical properties of water make it easier to dispense than infant feed powder, which can be sticky and which does not flow smoothly, making it harder to dispense accurately. Furthermore, the density of different infant feed powders may vary and measuring a volume of powder to be dispensed is not accurate, whereas the density of water does not vary greatly but is roughly 1 g/ml, depending on temperature and atmospheric pressure, which makes it easier to measure fluid ounces of water by weight.
The powder dispenser could operate by using a screw thread, as is known in the art. The water dispenser could operate by using a valve, and a flow meter could be incorporated for additional accuracy. The water should be boiled and cooled before it is dispensed into the bottle. There are a number of methods of achieving this, for example, cooled boiled water can be added to the compartment for water which is then heated to the correct temperature when it is dispensed, or the apparatus could be plumbed into the mains water system and a boiler and cooler incorporated.
A liquid crystal display (LCD) 12 is provided to communicate operating instructions to the user. If the dispenser 17 is to be calibrated for a different powder, the LCD 12 can be used to display calibration instructions. An audio speaker could be used to communicate instructions as an alternative or in addition to the LCD 12 Figure 3 is a process flow chart 30 for the dispensing operation. A user initiates the process by placing an empty sterile bottle on the pan 31, selects the amount of liquid infant feed formula to be dispensed 33 and presses the 'start' button 35. The bottle is weighed 37 and the amount of powder to be dispensed is calculated 39, based on a stored powder to water weight ratio 41. This ratio may be pre-programmed or stored by running the calibration process (see below).
A first process loop begins whereby powder is added to the bottle 43 until the target powder weight is reached 45. When the target powder weight is reached 45, the bottle and its contents are reweighed 47 and the actual powder weight is calculated 49.
The target water weight is calculated 51 based on the actual powder weight 53 and powder to water weight ratio 41.
A second process loop begins whereby water is added to the bottle 55 until the target water weight is reached 57. As it is necessary to precisely meter the water, the rate at which the water is dispensed may be reduced as the actual water weight approaches the target water weight.
When the weight of water dispensed into the bottle is equal to the target water weight, the process is complete 59.
Figure 4 is a process flow chart 60 for the calibrating operation. The user places an empty bottle on the pan 61 and presses a calibration button 63. The calibration button may be a separate button to the start button, or the start button may also be used, for example by an extended press. The scale measures and stores the weight of the empty bottle 65. The user is instructed to add powder for a certain amount of water 67, say to add enough powder corresponding to 8 fluid ounces of water. This must be done precisely by carefully following the powder manufacturer's instructions, as once calibrated the stored data will be reused in the future.
The bottle and powder is replaced on the scale 69 and weighed 71, and the powder to water weight ratio for this powder is calculated and stored 73.
Various modifications will be apparent to those in the art and it is desired to include all such modifications as fall within the scope of the accompanying claims.
