Abstract
A method of suspending items which have had a strip of material A firmly attached to them for the purpose. The strip of material A is passed over the first of two rods B, around the second rod C and back over the first rod B. Thus the item is suspended from the strip. The item may be moved horizontally during the period of suspension which may increase the capacity for the similar and adjacent hanging of further objects.
Description
HOOKLESS HOOK
This invention relates to the way that items of equipment and clothing are suspended from wall fittings.
The traditional hook arrangement suffers in two main ways: Firstly, in order to increase capacity beyond the level of one item per hook it is necessary to stack the items on the hooks such that earlier items may only be removed after later items.
Secondly, there are the duel safety issues of hooks protruding from generally flat vertical surfaces (often at eye level) and of the necessity of items intended for suspension to have loops attached into which fingers and so on may stray dangerously.
The object of the invention is to provide a method by which items may be suspended from fittings on a wall without need for stacking and without the need for potentially dangerous protuberances and loops.
This invention provides a strip of flexible material, such as cloth, which is firmly attached at one end only to the item which is to be suspended.
The wall (or other vertical surface) from which the items are to be suspended must have pairs of horizontal rods fitted to them. One of these rods will be slightly further from the wall than the other. The rods must be at approximately the same highs, slight differences in highs being unimportant. These rods will be supported, by means of bracketry attached to the wall, at points along their length. Such pairs of rods are commonly manufactured as towel rails and the like. The rods merely facilitate use of this invention and so do not form part of this invention.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is shown in section: Whilst the weight of the item to be suspended is borne by the user, the tip of strip of material A (farthest from the item to which the strip attached) is passed over rod B. around rod C and back between rod B and a part of strip of material A closer to the item than is the tip. The path of the material is indicated by the arrows shown in outline.
Rods B and C are both attached to wall (or other vertical surface) D both sides of the section for the duration.
When the user releases the weight of the item, the weight is taken by the strip of material. Gravity applies a force in the direction shown by the solid arrow. At this time the friction of the strip against itself at point E over bar B ensures that the item is safely suspended.
The item may be slid horizontally along the bars whilst it is suspended. This may help increase capacity by "bunching up" those items already suspended such that some area of the rod is exposed from which additional items may then be suspended.
When the time comes for the item to be removed from its suspended position all the user is required to do is lift the item slightly to take the weight and the draw the item away. The strip mechanism will automatically release.
Claims (4)
1) A method of item suspension utilising the friction inherent when parts of the same strip of material are placed together and a force is applied to keep them together.
2) A method of item suspension as claimed in claim 1 where no hook is required.
3) A method of item suspension as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 where suspended items may be moved horizontally during their period of suspension.
4) A method of item suspension substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
