Abstract

A device to support the upright of a trestle handrail comprises a channel 3 having attached thereto a sleeve 1 for the upright with a threaded means 4 for securing purposes, and a clip 2 which can pass over an end stop 7 of an adjoining trestle: channel 3 passes over the end stop 7 of the trestle shown as the device pivots about 5 from the solid line to the dotted line position.

Description

Handrail Support Device.
This invention relates to device that secures a handrail support to a trestle.
The trestle is a traditional and cost effective means of constructing a temporary working platform of varying levels dependent on the needs of the operative intending to work on it.The trestle is a steel frame supported by integral legs and constructed in a manner as to allow several scaffold boards (usually four number) to be placed on top of the uppermost member.
Located at either end of the member is a metal upstand that is intended to prevent the scaffold boards from moving horizontally whilst the system is in use.The standard height range at which most trestles are used to gain access within are between 51 cm to 168cm above the local ground or floor level where the operative is intending to gain access.
Individual needs of the operative dependent on factors such as confidence and location of the proposed works together with revisions to Health and Safety legislation with regard to falls from height has the potential to render the trestle less effective as there is a limited means of provision for a handrail support to be effectively secured to a trestle.
The construction industry in particular would benefit from a means of securing a handrail support to a trestle as falls from heights are the cause of the greatest loss of life currently within that industry.
An object of this invention is to provide a device which allows a uncomplicated effective means of securing a handrail support to a trestle which can facilitate either as a temporary or permanent requirement.
According to the present invention there is provided a device that can act as a temporary ancillary when applied to a trestle in a state of post manufacture or as an inherent factor of the trestles form on completion of the fabrication of a trestle.
Preferably the device is made of a steel material with sharp edges removed where possible, but it may instead be made of plastic or another material dependent on the proven integrity of that material.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; FIGURE 1 shows the side of the device.
FIGURE 2 shows the other side of the device.
FIGURE 3 shows the front of the device.
FIGURE 4 shows the back of the device.
FIGURE 5 shows the upward and downward motion of the device.
FIGURE 6 shows the top plan view of the device.
FIGURE 7 shows the underneath plan view of the device.
FIGURE 8 shows the device in isometric viewed from the other side of the device.
FIGURE 9 shows the device in perspective when viewed from the side of the device.
FIGURE 10 shows the device in its fixed position whilst utilising another trestle as a means of improved support. 3.
A shown in figure 9,the device comprises of a hollow, tubular upright section 1,a fixed connecting clip 2,a fixed channel section 3 shaped in a manner as to aid its attachment to the top member of the trestle,a fixed nut 4 and a fixed bar 5.
Their fabricated relationship to each other is as follows; 2 is fixed to 1.
3 is fixed to 1.
4 is fixed to 3.
is fixed to 3.
The fixed threaded nut 4 has a continuous aperture from its interface with channel section 3 and through the wall of hollow section 1as to allow a threaded bolt to pass through and subsequently push against the specified material that is proposed to act as a handrail support passed through the hollow circular section 1.
As shown in figure 5 the device is mounted onto the trestle by means of offering up the device to the uppermost horizontal member of the trestle 6 at approximately degrees ensuring that the hollow tubular section 1 is to the right hand side of the trestle when viewed as drawn and the fixed bar 5 is located to the underside the the same uppermost horizontal member of the trestle 6.1n a downwards clockwise motion the device is rotated to its final rest position ensuring that the metal upstand 7 projects through the aperture A shown in figures 6, 7 and 8.
If the device is to be removed then the operation is conducted in reverse sequence.
Figure 10 shows the device at its final rest position on a trestle 7 whilst the connecting clip 2 makes contact with another trestle 8 by means of the aperture B shown in figures 6,7 and 8 formed by the presence of connecting clip2 shown in figure 9.
The result is trestle fixed with a device that is capable of receiving a handrail support in a secure manner whilst utilising another trestle to improve the stability of the former trestle if required to do so.

Claims (5)

1.A support device comprises of a hollow upright section to receive a support with integral means of providing adjustable facilities for tightening and loosening the support to the device,a fixed connecting clip to allow the device to make firm contact with a secondary support trestle if required,a channel section shaped in a manner as to aid its attachment to the trestle with a fixed bar to act as a means of controlling the motion of the device and an integral aperture to receive a feature of the trestle to which it is intended to be fixed to.
2.A support device as claimed in Claim 1 where the shaped channel section allows the device to be placed on the trestle at an angle and rotated into its rest position and thus denying any excessive subsequent movement of the device in any direction other than when the device is removed in the reverse sequence.
3.A support device as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2,wherein a hollow section is fixed to a trestle either inclusive of a means of securing the hollow section to the support or excluding such means of securing a hollow section to a support.
4.A device as claimed in any preceding claim which is made of metal or plastics,or from a combination of these materials.
5.A device as substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1-10 of the accompanying drawings.
