Abstract

A push on nut has a body (1) with a bore, there being a plurality of internally threaded sections (2, 3, 4) movable within the bore. The sections (2, 3, 4) are biased by a spring (5) so that, in use, the nut can be pushed onto a threaded shaft, the threaded section gripping the threaded shaft to resist removal of the nut from the shaft.

Description

QUICK FASTENING PUSH ON NUT The invention relates to quick fastening nuts. More specifically a nut which is able to quickly be pushed into position by sliding down a threaded bolt in one direction with a small force and when in position is rotated in the conventional fashion to apply the appropriate torque. Conventional nuts are well established and cheap to manufacture, but assembling products (in particular complex ones with many component parts) using conventional nuts is time consuming due to the time required to rotate each nut down the bolt into position and can require expensive assembly equipment. Other types of quick fastening nuts and fastenings are available but they have limitations to their use. The object of this invention is to provide a quick fastening nut, which can be pushed over a threaded bolt into position but which will grip the bolt tightly in the other direction. The aforementioned nut is to be used in general assembly applications where speed is important and/or access is restricted. Accordingly this invention provides a quick fastening nut including a case which contains three threaded internal jaws which are sprung loaded and able to move up, down, in and out independently, (together with the internal profile of the case this movement allows the nut to slide over the threaded bolt in one direction but grip the thread of the bolt in the other) and finally a cap plate to hold all the aforementioned parts in place inside the case. Preferably the case of the nut is made with hexagonal or a circular (with gripping) cross-section to allow final torque to be applied once the nut is in place with a suitable tool as required. A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanied drawings in which. FIGURE 1: Shows an exploded view of the nut FIGURE 2: Show a cross section of the interior of the nut As shown in FIGURE 1 the nut comprises a case 1, which has three threaded jaws 2,3 and 4 that are fitted inside the case and able to move up and down independently. The spring 5 is fitted to the cap plate 6 which when fitted in place at the bottom of the case 1 applies a spring force to the threaded jaws 2,3 and 4. As shown in FIGURE 2 when the jaws 2,3 and 4 move up and down inside the case 1 due to internal profile of the case 1 the jaws 2,3 and 4 also move in and out against the bolt 7, hence allowing the nut to be pushed over the threads on the bolt in one direction but grip the bolt tightly in the other direction as the threads of the jaws 2,3 and 4 and bolt 7 coincide.

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS A quick fastening nut including a case which contains threaded internal jaws which are sprung loaded and able to move up, down, in and out independently inside the case, (together with the internal profile of the case this movement allows the nut to slide over the threaded bolt in one direction but grip the thread of the bolt in the other) and finally a cap plate to hold all the aforementioned parts in place inside the case. A quick fastening nut substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
