Abstract
240,423. Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of Davis, R. L.). Sept. 23, 1924, [Convention date]. Thermionic generators and modulating systems. -Thermionic valve systems having their respective filaments connected in series are provided with protective devices arranged to substitute automatically an equivalent resistance for any filament that fails to pass the heating-current. Automatic control of the plate supply current is also provided. The filaments of the valves 1 - - 4 are connected in series across the leads 5, 6, and each filament is shunted bv a relay 15 - - 18. When the filaments are intact, these relays do not close their contacts, but on the breakdown of any filament, the corresponding relay is energized and connects an equivalent resistance 19 - - 22 across the broken filament. When once attracted, the contacts remain closed. The plate supply of the valves is controlled bv a relay 30, the circuit of which includes the back contacts of relays 17, 18 in parallel, back contacts of relays 15, 16 in parallel, and contacts controlled by a voltage relay 10 and a current relay 7, respectively in shunt and in series with the filament supply 5, 6. The relays 10, 7 open the plate circuit if the filament voltage, or filament current,.are below normal; and the back contacts of the relays 15 - - 18 open the plate circuit if the filaments of valves 1, 2 fail simultaneously, or if valves 3, 4 fail simulaneously. When the group of valves 1, 2 is used for modulating the output from a group of oscillator valves 3, 4, the system can operate so long as one of the modulators and one of the oscillators are intact, and the plate current is cut off only when both or all the valves of one group are out of action. Filament current may be supplied by a motor generator set, and on starting, the application of plate potential is delayed by the relays 7, 10 until filament voltage and current have built up to their normal values.
