Abstract
A bottle top comprising two main sections, an inner (A) and an outer (B). The inner supports three clasps (D) which engage the depression around the top of a standard beer / soft-drinks bottle. The clasps are prevented from retracting into the body of the inner section by protrusions moulded into the outer section, unless the outer section is moved upwards relative to the inner, against spring pressure. This releases the device from the top of the bottle. The device is locked by rotation of the central section of the barrel-lock (G), using a key (E). This rotation moves tang (F) to a position in which it engages a slot cut in both sections preventing the movement of the inner section relative to the outer section.
Description
24037 1 5 a locking bottle top
the background
Background to this idea is the growing number of cases of "date-rape".
During the period leading up to this crime there can often be the clandestine drugging of a victim's drink during a period at a nightclub or pub. This typically happens when the victim's drink is left unattended.
The problem The problem is to prevent this.
Currently, people are having to carry their drinks (in bottles, usually) around with them, thumb pressed over the opening, either whilst dancing or even visiting the toilet.
How this addresses the problem To address this problem, the locking bottle top allows the owner to quickly seal the top of their drink by simply pushing the device down on the top / neck of the bottle. H the device is pre-locked, this automatically prevents access to the drink by un-authorised persons. The top can only be removed subsequently by use of a (removable) plastic key.
Essential features The pre-locked device can be applied by merely pushing down over the open top of a bottle using minimal pressure. Access to the contents of the bottle is denied.
The locking clasps ensure that the top cannot be removed by pulling, without first applying me key. The act of pulling the locked device upwards forces the clasps to grasp the neck (rim) of the bottle more tightly.
The device can be applied to a bottle un-locked at any time the drink is not to be left un-attended - it can then be pulled off without using the key.
Use of the key unblocks the device and allows it to be pulled off, again using minimal pressure. The act of pulling the un-locked device upwards automatically releases the clasps.
The Drawings Figure (i) This shows a vertical cross-section of the device (across line x_x in figure (ii) ). In essence it comprises an inner, 'the bottle top or seal' (A) and an outer 'collar' (B).
Un-Locked position: The outer collar (B) can slide upwards over the inner 'seal' (A) by a relatively small amount (approx. 5mm), but the two parts are held in the closed / resting' position by a coil spring (C). The action of pulling the unlocked device upwards away from a bottle allows the outer collar (B) to move, against the spring (C), in relation to the inner seal (A), thus releasing the three clasps (D) which are engaged in the top 'lip' of the bottle.
This allows release of the device.
Locked position: Inserting and fuming the key (E) effectively locks the two main sections (A B) of the device together via the protruding tang (F) (part of barrel lock (G)), disallowing relative motion and therefore preventing the release of the three clasps (D).
The top cannot be pulled from the bottle, and any pressure increases the 'grip' of the three clasps (D).

Claims (5)
- A locking bottle top (re: application number GB0315553.8) 1. a bottle top having 3 integral clasps capable, in their locked state, of grasping the underside of the top lip of a standard beer or soft- drinks bottle preventing removal from the bottle.
- 2. a bottle top as claimed in Claim 1comprising two concentric sections, the outer of which may slide upwards over the inner by a small degree, releasing the aforementioned clasps.
- 3. a bottle top as claimed in Claim 1 and 2 having a barrel type lock, with removable key, integral with the inner concentric portion, the locking of which will disable the relative movement of the concentric sections.
- 4. a home top as claimed in Claim 1 and 2 comprising two concentric sections, the outer of which may slide over the inner by a small degree but sprung to hold the two in the closed position.
- 5. a bottle top as claimed in any preceding Claim which is made from a combination of plastic-material and metal.:.. ::e À:^.: . À.e.. - .
