Description

Television Apparatus with Teletext Preferred Page Set Establishing
Function
Description
s The present invention relates to a television apparatus having a teletext function.
Teletext is a well-known information service which is transmitted in the vertical blanking interval (VBI) of analogue television signals.
The teletext information is divided into "pages", each of which may comprise a plurality of"sub-pages". The pages are transmitted cyclically and are often cached in a receiver to reduce the time required to display a user selected page.
A user generally selects a page of interest by operating their television's remote control to select a teletext mode and then enter a page number or press one of four coloured shortcut buttons which are dynamically associated with different pages.
According to the present invention, there is provided television apparatus having a teletext function, the apparatus comprising user input means and processing means configured to be responsive to operation of the user input means to establish a subset of available teletext pages and, following establishment of said subset, to limit stepwise navigation through the available teletext pages, in accordance with operation of the user input means, to said subset.
The apparatus may include memory for caching received teletext pages.
Preferably, the processing means is configured: to be responsive to operation of the user input means to obtain category identifiers from the basic table top data in received teletext data and generate a user interface display signal for displaying the categories identified by said identifiers; and - 2 to be responsive to operation of the user input means during display of said user interface display signal to include teletext pages categorised in a displayed category, selected by operation of the user input means, in said subset.
The apparatus may inclubc a tuner for receiving television signals and a display screen for displaying television programmer, teletext pages and, optionally user interface display signal. A typlical example of such an apparatus is a television set.
However, the display screen may be provided in a separate apparatus, e.g. a computer monitor.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be descriLcd, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a block diagram of a television receiver employing a method of editing preferred pages of teletext according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a flowchart of editing preferred pages of teletext according to the present invention; and Figure 3A and 3B are examples of screens used for explaining how to edit a preferred page according to Figure 2.
A television apparatus according to the present invention is adapted for receiving analogue television signals that have teletext information carried in their vertical blanking intervals. The broadcast signal includes a portion known as the vertical blanking interval (VBI). The teletext pages are classified according to their subject mattcr into categories e.g. weather, travel, stocks, what's on and economy.
Rcfcrring to Figure 1, the television receiving apparatus includes a tuner 120 which tunes in broadcast signals in accordance with tuning control data from a microprocessor 110. An image processor 130 demodulates the composite video signal from the tuner and provides the demodulated signal to a composition unit 170 and a teletext decoder 150. - 3
An on screen display (OSD) unit 140 generates on-screen display (OSI)) texts, which correspond to the teletext categories and mark the categories. The OSD unit includes a character read-only-memory (ROM) to store OSD text fonts, a program ROM used to control the OSD texts, a timing unit for ensuring that OSD s text is correctly positioned on the apparatus's screen and a display generator that creates vertical blanking signals and red, green and blue (ROB) signals for displaying OSD text under the control of the microprocessor 110.
The teletext decoder 150 decodes teletext information, contained in received composite video signals, to produce digital information representing text and blocky graphics.
A teletext output unit 160 outputs teletext information to a composition unit 170 in response to a teletext mode selection signal from the microprocessor 110.
The composition unit 170 composes display control signals from outputs of the OSD unit 140, the teletext output unit 160 and the image processor 130 according to selection signals from the microprocessor 110 and outputs the composed signals to a cathode-ray tube (CRT) 180.
The microprocessor 110 controls the overall operation of the apparatus on the basis of broadcast format information, and controls the teletext output unit 160 to output decoded teletext information from the text decoder 150, if so requested by a user.
Especially, if a preferred page editing function is requested via a key input unit 112, 2s the microprocessor 110 extracts category identifiers, using the basic top table (B'[T) of the teletext, outputs the extracted identifiers to the OSD unit 140, extracts the pages of a selected category form among the categories displayed in the OSD screen, and outputs the information of the extracted pages to the teletext output relit 160.
l'he key input unit 112 allows a user to input a teletext mode command and other commands for various operations and outputs the commands to the microprocessor - 4 110. The key input unit 112 has keys corresponding to channel up, channel down, and channel numbers, and allows the user to select a desired item from among the displayed teletext information.
s Referring to Figure 2, in a method according to the present invention, a broadcast signal carrying teletext information is received and the received signal is demodulated to obtain a composite video signal in step 210.
The teletext information in the vertical blank intervals of the demodulated video signal is extracted and stored page by page in step 220.
It is checked whether teletext mode has been requested by the pressing of a button (not shown), included in the key input unit 112, in step 230.
If teletext mode is requested, a default teletext page, e.g. page 100, is displayed in step 232. If the default page comprises sub-pages, the subpages are displayed sequentially.
It is checked whether the preferred pages editing mode by the pressing of a button (not shown), included in the key input unit 112, in step in step 240.
If the apparatus is not in the editing mode in step 240, the current page continues to be displayed in step 250. If the current page comprises subpages, these are displayed sequentially. 2s
If the apparatus is in the editing mode in step 240, the displaying of the current teletext page is terminated, category indicators are extracted from the teletext information by referring to the basic top table (BTT) information which corresponds to index information of the teletext information, and the category identifiers arc displayed on the screen by the OSD unit 140 in step 260. The BTT information includes largely category identifiers and links to main pages for the categories.
For example, if the teletext mode and the editing mode for preferred pages are sequentially selected while watching "channel 10, ABC broadcasting station", a menu 300 having category indentifiers, such as "politics" 311, "economy" 312, is weather" 313 and "stocks" 314, is displayed as shown in Figure 3A.
A desired category, among the categories displayed in the menu sctcen, can be selected by moving a cursor using the up/down buttons on the apparatus's remote control device in step 270. For example, a user may select the classification items "politics" 311 and "stocks" 314 as shown in Figure 3B. Altctnatively, a function may be added, in which after the editing mode for the preferred pages is selected, an OSD menu, for example, "pages are being rearranged" is displayed for a predetermined time, and the OSD menu disappears when the rearrangement of the pages is finished.
All of the pages in the selected categories are loaded so as to be available for display on the screen in step 280. For example, if the categories "politicis" and "stocks" are selected, only the pages related to "politics" and "stocks" arc loaded. In other words, if matter related to "politics" is contained in pages 200 to 250 and matter related to "stocks" fall within pages 500 to 510, a first page to be displayed on the screen will be the page 200. If the user reads through all of pages 200 to 250 and tries to move to the next page by manipulating buttons, page 500 will promptly be displayed on the screen. If the user finishes reading up to page 510 and tries to move to the next page, the screen goes back to the screen displaying the page 200.
In order to leave the preferred pages editing mode, a predetermined procedure may be enacted, in which the editing mode for the preferred pages is released by canceling the mark-up for the item that is to be released from the editing mode.
Then, an OSD menu indicating that the teletext pages are being rearranged is displayed on the screen. When the rearrangement of the teletext pages is finished, the OSI) menu is eliminated, and, instead, the rearranged pages are displayed on the screen.
- G
It is checked whether the teletext mode is terminated in step 290. Until the teletext mode is terminated, the steps of editing preferred pages 240 through 290 are repeated.
It is possible that the method and apparatus described above according to the present invention is implemented as codes readable by computer in recording media accessible by computer. The media readable by a computer may include all kinds of recording devices, such as ROM, RAM, CD-ROM, magnetic tape, hard disc, floppy disc, flash memory, optical data storage device etc., in which data readable by a computer can be stored. The media also includes everything that is in the form of electrical or electromagnetic signals, e.g. an internet transmission. In addition, the media readable by a computer can be in the form of codes, which are distributed to a plurality of computer systems connected to a network, that may be stored and executed using a distribution method.
As described above, the user can view preferred pages of the teletext without extra knowledge of page numbers of the teletext by editing and displaying the preferred pages during teletext broadcasting.
