Abstract

A hand held brick laying tool has a fixed end panel and a fixed side panel 1, and a sliding side panel 2 to accommodate different widths of brick. Panel 2 slides on handle 3 which can be fixed using locking pins 5. Shims are provided to accommodate undersize bricks. With a brick in the tool, cement is applied to the brick, the radiussed ribs 7 acting as guides along which a trowel can be drawn to remove excess cement and ensure correct cement depth. Guides 8 bear against preceding bricks to ensure correct positioning of the brick, before plate 2 is slid outwardly and the tool released.

Description

BRICK LAYING TOOL
I. 'I'he invention relates to a tool into which you can place and clamp a brick, then butter the bottom and end with an exact depth of cement. You can then lay the brick down onto footings or exciting brickwork with the tool attached which will align the brick both vertically and horizontally. The tool can then be released and slid away leaving the horizontal cement margin already pointed. The tool is designed to enable a novice or inexperienced bricklayer to produce satisfactory brickwork.
2. 'I'he main problem for the inexperienced builder is the inability to judge a consistent depth of cement on the horizontal and vertical joints between bricks.
This inturn leads to the bricks tipping offlevel and cement margins being let's shallow.
3. 'I'he object ot'this invention is to provide the inexperienced person with a tool with which he can produce satisfactory brickwork.
4. '['his invention provides a hand held brick-clamping tool which has cement depth and width control using built in trowel guides. The tool will also align the brick both vertically and horizontally with previously laid brick and on release Tom the brick will leave the horizontal joints pointed.
5. Preferably the tool can be made Prom plastic or lightweight alloys to eliminate corrosion and to keep weight to a minimum with out compromising the strength.
Alternatively it could be made from stainless steel but this would add weight.
6. Preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Page 2 Fig ( 1). Shows lLc top and side view of the tool from the open cod.
Fig (2). Shows the top and side view from the closed in end.
ig (3). Show the views into the open end of the tool with the brick in place.
As shown in Figs I) and (2) the tool comprised of a main body 1. Consisting of top, side and end moulded as a single unit with stiffening ribs for added rigidity to stop distortion.
loin (2). Shows sliding side panel 2 which is connected to cranked horizontal side rods and handle 3.
Fig If). Also shows slide rod guides, blocks and handle 4 Which are secured to the top of the main body 1. Via pins. Slide rods 3. Can be secured in position in guide blocks 4. Buy locking pins 5.
gliding side panel 2. Has moulded toddies 6. Which locate and slide in slots in body I. To maintain tool rigidity.
I;ig ( I). Shows a radius horizontal rib 7. Which runs the length, but fall s 10 mm short of the open end of the side panel of main body I Also shown is a radiused horizontal rib 7. Which runs the full length of sliding side panel 2.
1 ig ( I). Shows that the side panel of main body I. extends 10 mm beyond the top at the open end of the tool 8. Also the bottom of this panel extends 10 mm below the horizontal radioused rib 7. I his can also be seen clearly in ig (2) and ig (3) 1, (3) 2. And (3) 3. Page.
Fi g (3) 1. and (3! 2. Show the end view of the horizontal trowel guides 7. Which can be seen more clearly in Fig (3) 3, The lightly shaded section g, represents a cut- through section of a brick and demonstrates where this would sit when the tool is in use.
Fig (3) I, and (3) 2, also show a diagonally shaded area 10. At the bottom of both drawings. These represent where the cement layer would be when the tool is in use.
Fig (4) shows how the tool A, when fitted with correct pacl;ing shims B can be held, upturned in the left hand, with the open end uptilted at around 45 degrees, with the tool fig ( 1) 1, in this position and the sliding side panel fig (2) 2' in the open position, a building brick can be inserted and side panel 2, can be squcczcd shut via sliding handle 3, and fixed handle 4, with this done locking pins 5, can now be tightened with right hand to secure the brick in place.
With the tool still held uptilted with open end uppermost cement can be applied to the bottom and the end of the brick with a trowel, Excess cement applied to the brick end should be sliced off with a trowel, using the end ofthe sliding side panel tig (2) 2, in conjunction with the end of main body fig ( :1) as guides, excess cement applied to the bottom of the brick can be removed with the trowel using; the bolturn of the horizontal radioused ribs tig ( I) 7, as guides to maintain uniform depth. A slicing action should be used moving the trowel baci: from the open end of the tool towards enclosed cud. Page
N.R. Note: (:emcut must be compacted well into the tool before any excess is removed to prevent loss of cement when the brick is laid.
I'he tom, complete with brick and cement can now he fumed over so that the handle is uppermost and the cemented end of the brick can be offered up to the proceeding brick on the wall. As the brick is being put in position on the walls horizontal alignment guide fig (3) 8, should touch the brick below. 'I'hen the tool should be slid forward until the vertical alignment guide fig ( I) 8, is touching the side of the proceeding brick. The brick can now be Armed into t'ina1 position and the locking pins fig (2) 5, can now be released. The tool can now be lightly taped with the trowel to break the cement seal and sliding side panel fit; (2) 2' can be opened. The tool can now be slid horizontally off the brick, leaving the horizontal cement joints pointed.
The tool can now be upturned again and wiped clean ready t'or the next beck. Page
