Abstract

240,186. Murphy, E. N. Sept. 22, 1924, [Convention date]. Walls.-The components 2, 3 of a two-part wall structure are secured together by insulators, each of which comprises spaced rigid supporting members 6, 14, Figs. 1 and 2, connected by a rivet 11 or the like, and an intermediate rigid supporting member 9 having cushioning elements 8. 10 on each side between it and the rigid members 6, 14. The intermediate member 9 is connected to one wall part 2, which is fireproof, and the rigid member 6 is secured to the wall 3, which may be of plaster 20 and metal lathing 19, supported by channel-irons 18. The insulators comprise felt pads 8. 10, disposed in the metal members 6, 9, having bent-up sides 7, 27. The plate 9, which has an elongated hole 15 preventing contact with the rivet 11, is secured to vertical bars 25 of the wall 2 at 28, Fig. 1. Lugs 21 struch out of the plates 6, Fig. 6, are disposed on opposite sides of a channeliron 18, to which the plate is secured by a wire 22, Fig. 1, passing through openings in the plate and around the lugs 21 and channel-irons 18. Quilts 55 of cattle-hair, felt. &c. are secured by the vertical bars 25 to the wall 2. The channel-irons 18 may rest on a pad 34, Fig. 1, held by a chair 35, lugs 37 of which secure it in position on the floor 38. In a modification, the supporting structure consists of studs 65 having a lath and plaster wall on each side, and spacing and insulating members are secured together and to vertical members 67 of the plaster wall by bolts 66. the feet 27 being nailed to the studs 65 through a quilt 78. The supporting structure may also consist of furring strips 58, Fig. 8, disposed in channel-members 59, the lath and plaster walls being attached on each side in connection with spacing members 4, and a quilt 55 is wound in zig-zag manner about the strips 58 to which it is nailed. In a further modification, the supporting structure may consist of channel-irons to which the quilts may be bolted. Instead of a separate supporting wall, the finishing walls may each be secured to the channelirons, between which the spacing members are disposed, the quilt being passed between each spacing member and a channel-iron. Ceilings, consisting of plaster 43 and laths 41, Fig. 1, are secured to rows of channel-irons 40 engaged by hooks 50, the shanks 51 of which are secured to inverted U-shaped straps 54 extending in a straddled position across felt &c. pads 49 carried by U-shaped members 46 having flanges 47, which are supported by hooks &c. 48 depending from the floor above. Quilts 56 are provided across the channel-irons 40. In a modification, Fig. 7, the feet 27 of the insulators are secured to furring-strips 73 attached to joists 71 and bolts 66 secure the various parts of the insulators and spacing members together and to the ceiling-supporting channel-irons 76, through the medium of members 75. A quilt 79 is interposed between the insulators and the strips 73. Floors 31, Fig. 1, are supported by nailing strips 32, which are embraced by supporting-pads 34 carried by chairs 33.
