Description

A FRAME
The present invention relates to a frame for displaying a flexible sheet of material, particularly, but not exclusively, for displaying a tapestry.
The conventional way in which a tapestry is displayed is to fix the top edge of the tapestry to a wooden pole using nails or pins, connect the ends of the pole to a string and then hang the string from a hook attached to a wall.
An object of the present invention is to provide an alternative means by which a flexible sheet, such as a tapestry, can be displayed.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a frame for displaying a flexible sheet of material comprising a first support member for fixing to a support surface, and a securing member for engagement with the first support member, one of the members defining at least one recess and the other member defining at least one engaging portion which is complementary to said at least one recess, such that a sheet placed on the first support member is at least in part forced into the or each recess when the or each engaging portion is matingly engaged in a respective recess and the or each engaging portion, when engaged in a respective recess, extends through the major plane of the sheet.
In this way, a sheet of material can be conveniently displayed in an aesthetically attractive manner.
Preferably the engaging portion comprises a cord.
Preferably the frame further comprises a second support member for mounting on the first support member, such that a portion of said second support member overlies said securing member. In a preferred embodiment of the invention said securing member is formed integrally with said second support member.
The first or second support member may comprise an arm configured so as to overlie a complementary rim defined on the other support member. The arm may terminate in a lip, said lip being configured to engage a surface of the rim.
It is preferred that the second support member comprises a lip which extends towards the first support member and is configured, in use, so as to engage a portion of the sheet and force it towards the first support member.
Preferably at least one of said first support member, second support member and securing member is formed from a plastics material.
The or each recess may be formed integrally with the first support member.
An adhesive is preferably provided on a surface of at least one of the first support member and the securing member, the surface on which the adhesive is provided preferably being located adjacent and/or within the or each recess. The adhesive may be in the form of an adhesive tape.
Preferably the securing member comprises an enlarged end portion configured to engage a complementary lip defined in the or each recess.
Preferably the first support member comprises a fixing plate to enable the frame to be secured to the support surface.
The sheet may be a tapestry.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a kit of parts to be assembled to provide a frame for displaying a flexible sheet of material comprising a first support member for fixing to a support surface, and a securing member for engagement with the first support member, one of the members defining at least one recess and the other member defining at least one engaging portion which is complementary to said at least one recess, such that a sheet placed on the first support member is at least in part forced into the or each recess when the or each engaging portion is matingly engaged in a respective recess and the or each engaging portion, when engaged in a respective recess, extends through the major plane of the sheet.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure I is a perspective sectional view of a portion of a first support member with part of a tapestry attached and a second support member with an integrally formed securing member before assembly to form a top portion of a frame in accordance with a first embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention; Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the first support member of figure I fixed to a wall; Figure 3 is a cross sectional view of the first support member fixed to the wall as shown in figure 2 with part of the tapestry attached to the first support member as shown in figure 1; Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of the second support member and securing member of figure I mounted on the first support member with part of the tapestry attached as shown in figure 3 to form a top portion of a fully assembled frame in accordance with a first embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention; and Figure S is a perspective sectional view of a portion of a first support member with part of a tapestry and a securing member attached, and a second support member before assembly to form a top portion of a frame in accordance with a second embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention.
Referring to figure 1, a top portion of a frame for displaying a tapestry in accordance with a first embodiment of a first aspect of the present invention comprises a hollow generally rectangular one-piece support member I and an L-shaped one-piece bracket 2 designed to be mounted on the support member 1. The support member I and the bracket 2 are each formed from a moulded plastics material. In order to form a frame completely surrounding the periphery of the tapestry, the top portion shown would be connected to similar side and lower portions.
The support member I comprises generally parallel front and rear walls 3, 4 interconnected by a lower wall 5. First and second upper walls 6, 7 extend generally parallel to the lower wall 5 and are connected by a step 8 so as to define a rim on the upper surface of the first member 1. A lip 9 depends downwardly from a front end of the second upper wall 7. A wall 10 depends downwardly from the second upper wall 7 and is connected to the front wall 3 by a further wall 11 so as to define a recess 12. Wall 11 has an upper surface 13 within the recess 12 which, in combination with lip 9 defines an access aperture 14 of reduced dimension compared to an interior region 15 of the recess 12. A section of double-sided adhesive tape 16 is provided on the front surface of front wall 3 and upper surface 13. Part of a tapestry 17 is attached to the front surface of front wall 3 and upper surface 13 via the adhesive tape 16. Attachment of the tapestry 17 to front wall 3 and upper surface 13 will be described in more detail below. The rear wall 4 extends beyond the point where it intersects the lower wall 5 so as to define a generally planar fixing plate suitable for fixing the support member I to an adjacent supporting structure, such as a wall, as shown in figure 2.
The L-shaped bracket 2 comprises first and second integrally formed arms 18, 19 which extend generally perpendicular to one another. A securing member shaped to define an engaging portion in the form of a projection 20 is integrally formed in the rear surface of the second arm 19. The projection 20 has a stem 21 of similar size to that of the access aperture 14 and an enlarged end portion 22 of a similar size to that of the interior region 15 of the recess 12. Each arm 18, 19 terminates in a respective lip 23, 24.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 illustrate the three steps to be followed in order to display a tapestry in a frame in accordance with the present invention. In figure 2, the support member 1 is fixed to a wall 25 by the insertion of a series of screws 26 (only one of which is shown) through the fixing plate forming part of rear wall 4 and in to the wall 25. Referring to figure 3, a section 27 near the periphery of tapestry 17 is then pressed against the adhesive tape 16, and a narrow section 28 at the periphery of the tapestry 17 loosely inserted into the recess 12 using a suitable tool, such as a Stanley knife, (not shown). Finally, as shown in figure 4, the bracket 2 is mounted on the support member 1 and clipped in to position by the application of pressure so as to force the enlarged end portion 22 of the projection 20 through the reduced dimension access aperture 14 and into the interior region 15 of the recess 12 such that the projection 20 extends through the major plane of the tapestry 17. Engagement of the projection 20 in the recess 12 forces section 28 of the tapestry 17 into the recess 12 and ensures that the tapestry 17 is securely held within the recess 12. The first arm 18 of the bracket overlies the upper surface of second upper wall 7 and lies within the rim of the first support member 1 so that the upper surface of the first arm 18 and the upper surface of the first wall 6 are approximately coplanar. Lip 23 engages the upper surface of the second upper wall 7. The second arm 19 overlies the front surface of front wall 3 and lip 24 forces a portion of the tapestry 17 towards a corner of the support member 1 at the intersection of its front and lower walls 3, 5. Section 27 of the tapestry 17 is thus supported s between the front wall 3 of the support member 1 and the second arm 19 of the bracket 2.
Section 28 of the tapestry 26 is supported between the end 22 of the projection 20 and upper surface 13 of wall 11 of the first support member 1.
Insertion of the end portion 22 of the projection 20 through the aperture 14 is facilitated by the inherent flexibility of the second upper wall 7 and lip 9 of the support member I and that of the stem 21 and end portion 22 of the projection 20.
Figure 5 shows a top portion of a frame for displaying a tapestry in accordance with a second embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention. The frame comprises a solid generally rectangular one-piece support member 29, a securing member shaped to define an engaging portion in the form of a cord 30 for mating engagement in a recess 31 defined in the support member 29, and an L-shaped one-piece bracket 32 designed to be mounted on the support member 29 such that a portion of the bracket 32 overlies the cord 30. The support member 29 and bracket 32 are each formed from wood. The cord 30 is formed from a fibrous material. As before, in order to form a frame completely surrounding the periphery of the tapestry, the top portion shown would be connected to similar side and lower portions.
The support member 29 comprises generally parallel flat upper and lower surfaces 33, 34 interconnected by a rear surface 35 and a front surface consisting of upper and intermediate sections 36, 37, which are generally parallel to the rear surface 35, and a lower section 38, which is inclined towards the rear surface 35. In this embodiment, the support member 29 is fixed to a wall (not shown) by the insertion of screws 39 through the lower section 38 of the front surface and in to the wall. Recess 31 is defined in between the upper and intermediate sections 36, 37 of the front surface of the support member 29. The recess 31 comprises generally parallel upper and lower surfaces 40, 41 interconnected by a surface 42.
A section of double-sided adhesive tape 43 is provided on the intermediate section 37 of the front surface of the support member 29 and on the lower surface 41 of the recess 31. A part of a tapestry 44 is attached to intermediate section 37 and lower surface 41 using the adhesive tape 43.
The primary difference between the first and second embodiments of the present invention is that, in the first embodiment (shown in figures 1-4), the securing member defining the engaging portion (projection 20) is formed integrally with the bracket 2, whereas, in the second embodiment (shown in figure 5), the securing member defining the engaging portion (cord 30) is a separate component to the bracket 32. Thus, the method of displaying a tapestry using the frame of figure 5 is analogous to that shown in figures 2 to 4, however, the final step (shown in figure 4) now consists of two discrete steps: cord 30 is first inserted into the recess 31 such that the cord's width extends into the recess 31 and through the major plane of the tapestry 44; and the bracket 32 is then mounted on the support member 29 so that the bracket 32 overlies the cord to provide a secure and aesthetically attractive frame around the tapestry 44.
Alternatively, the embodiment shown in figure 5 can be utilised without the bracket 32. The engaging portion (cord 30) is instead used to secure the tapestry 44 within the frame. In such an instance, the cord 30 and the complementary recess 31 are sized such that the cord 30 will act to securely locate the portion of the tapestry 44 extending within the recess 31, when the cord 30 is inserted into the recess 31.
It will be understood that numerous modifications can be made to the embodiments of the invention described above without departing from the underlying inventive concept and that these modifications are intended to be included within the scope of the invention. For example, the engaging portion, e.g. projection can be formed on the support member and the complementary recess formed on the securing member which may or may not be formed integrally with the bracket. In this case, the securing member could take the form of a rear-facing C-shaped clip defining the recess. The clip would be secured to the engaging portion to hold the tapestry against the support member at the same time (if clip and bracket formed integrally) or prior to (if clip and bracket not formed integrally) mounting the bracket on the support member.
The frame can form a border around the complete periphery of the tapestry, as is typical in conventional frames used to display photographs and paintings, or can be used to display the tapestry by supporting just a section of the periphery of the tapestry, e.g. the top edge. The bracket and support member can be manufactured from any suitable material and can be any desirable size or shape, e.g. linear (if supporting just one edge), square, rectangular, oval etc. Moreover, the cord can be manufactured from any suitable material.
The rim can be formed in either the support member or the bracket, or can be omitted completely if desired. It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the frame forming the first and second embodiments of the first aspect of the present invention can be used to display any form of flexible sheet material, including, but not limited to, tapestries, paintings, photographs and posters.
