Abstract

A tablet enclosure comprising at least one sheet 10 of edible jelly, in or between which a tablet may be enclosed. A single sheet 10 may be folded to envelop a tablet or alternatively two sheets may be used to enclose a tablet. The or each sheet 10 may feature a recess or recesses 16 into which a tablet may be placed. The jelly used to form the sheets 10 may be tacky to allow opposed surfaces of the sheet or sheets to be stuck together to enclose the tablet. A removable backing sheet 12 and a cover sheet (14), each formed of a flexible sheet of release coated paper or plastics material, may also be provided.

Description

TABLET ENCLOSURE
The present invention relates to an enclosure and, more particularly, to an edible enclosure for assisting a person or animal in ingesting a tablet enclosed therein, the term tablet in the context of the present invention being intended to encompass any type of tablets or capsules.
It is known for a person or animal to experience great difficultly in ingesting a tablet, if required to overcome the natural instinct to chew the tablet, to reduce it to a moistened, semi-solid consistency, before it is swallowed.
I have now devised an arrangement which overcomes this problem.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a tablet enclosure comprising at least one sheet of edible jelly.
It will be appreciated that by enclosing a tablet in or between one or more sheets of edible jelly, having an inherent moist, semi-solid consistency, the natural instinct of a person or animal to chew the tablet before swallowing will be diminished.
The enclosure will also serve to mask the appearance, odour, flavour, colour and texture of the tablet, which might otherwise make the tablet unpalatable. The constituents of the jelly sheet(s) may thus be chosen to provide an enclosure having an odour, flavour, colour, texture and dimensions that are known to be particularly palatable to the human or animal to whom the tablet is to be administered.
The tablet enclosure may comprise two sheets of edible jelly for enclosing a tablet therebetween.
In this case, the respective surfaces of the two jelly sheets are preferably of a tacky nature so that opposed surfaces of the sheets will become joined together, when superimposed, to enclose a tablet therebetween. Preferably at least one of the jelly sheets is formed with a recess for accommodating a tablet. The opposite halves of a tablet may be accommodated within respective recesses formed in each of the two sheets, which are aligned when the sheets are superimposed.
Alternatively, the tablet enclosure may comprise a single sheet of edible jelly arranged to be folded to envelop
a tablet.
Preferably the surface of the single jelly sheet is of a tacky nature, so that opposed surfaces of the sheet will become joined together when the sheet is folded, to enclose a
tablet therebetween.
Preferably the single jelly sheet is formed with at least one recess for accommodating a tablet. The opposite halves of a tablet may be accommodated within respective recesses which are aligned when the sheet is folded.
Preferably the single jelly sheet is supported on a flexible backing sheet, the degree of adhesion between the flexible backing sheet and the jelly sheet being less than that between the opposed surfaces of the jelly sheet when the jelly sheet is folded.
A tablet may thus be enveloped within the single jelly sheet by placing the tablet upon the exposed upper surface of the jelly sheet, folding the backing sheet, to bring opposed portions of the upper surface of the jelly sheet into contact with one another around the periphery of the tablet, and then unfolding the backing sheet, leaving the folded jelly sheet in I place upon backing sheet for subsequent removal.
The supporting surface of the backing sheet may be coated with a release agent, such as a silicone release agent, to assist in the separation of the jelly sheet therefrom.
A further flexible sheet or an extended portion of the backing sheet may be used to cover the upper surface of the jelly sheet prior to use.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of examples only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an isometric view of a first embodiment of tablet enclosure in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is an isometric view of a second embodiment of tablet enclosure in accordance with the present invention; and Figures 3 to 5 are a series of isometric view of the tablet enclosure of Figure 2, illustrating a preferred method of use of the enclosure.
Referring to Figure 1, a first embodiment of tablet enclosure is shown comprising two, superimposed sheets of jelly 2,4, between which a tablet may be placed, for example in a locating recess formed in one or other of the opposed surfaces 6,8 of the sheets.
The opposed surfaces 6,8 of the two jelly sheets 2,4 are of a tacky nature, so that the superimposed sheets will adhere to one another when brought into contact around the periphery of a tablet, to secure the tablet in place.
Referring to Figure 2, a second embodiment of enclosure is shown, comprising a single sheet of jelly 10, disposed between a backing sheet 12 and a cover sheet 14, each comprising a flexible sheet of release coated paper or plastics material.
A preferred method of use of the enclosure of Figure 2 is illustrated in Figures 3 to 5.
Firstly, as shown in Figure 3, the cover sheet 14 is removed and discarded, allowing a tablet to be located in a recess 16 formed in one side of the exposed, upper surface 18 of the jelly sheet 10.
By folding the backing sheet 12, as shown in Figure 4, the opposite sides of the jelly sheet 10 will thus be brought into superimposed contact, enveloping the tablet between their opposed surfaces.
The degree of adhesion between the tacky, opposed surfaces of the folded jelly sheet 10 is greater than that between the jelly sheet 10 and the backing sheet 12, so that the jelly sheet 10 will remain folded around the tablet when the backing sheet 12 is subsequently unfolded, as shown in Figure 5, allowing the folded jelly sheet 10 to be removed from the backing sheet 12 for ingestion.
The enclosures thus described provide a convenient means for aiding the ingestion of a tablet.
