Abstract

A door closer has compression spring 2 which may be placed within pistons 3 where a restricting device is placed within the force path of the spring 2 in order to control the closing force of the door closer. The restricting device may be in the form of hardened balls 11 which act on side walls of housing 1 in the form of friction. The hardened balls 11 may be acted on by a radial force from spring 10 which is adjusted by rotation of a tapered screw 9.

Description

2401 148 Developlerits in autol.atic door clusers
Background
Automatic door closers are devices connected between a door and France, serving to keep the door closed when not in use. They usually consist of one or more springs to produce a closing force and damping means to slow down the closing speed to minimize noise and the possibility of injury to users.
lo Although simpler systems using gravity weights and/or no damping exist, this invention relates to the aforesaid kind having one or more compression springs and fluid damping.
More specifically, this invention describes a concealed automatic door closer, where the only externally visible components consist of two plates flush with the edge of the door and frame s respectively, with connection between the two conporients by iriear.s of a link, chain or cable.
Such concealed automatic door closers are particularly popular in new constructions where the appearance and absence of external components are appreciated. However many of the features described in this invention are also capable of incorporation in more conventional externally mounted and concealed automatic door closers.
Introduction
I'he objective of this invention is to provide a design for an automatic door closer with a novel means of adjusting the door closing force profile, allowing a wide range of door closing Forces to be provided within one compact unit, and permitting the installer to very easily set the appropriate closing force during installation.
Description
According to the invention, for which we pray a patent may be granted, an automatic door closer is provided with one or more coiled compression springs to produce a door closing force, such force being capable of rea ly adjustment by means herein described.
In a preferred embodiment of tile invention and shown in exploded form in figure 1, an aut.onatic door closer comprises a housing (1) positively secured within the edge of a door (not shown).
ITousing (I) has two parallel borings, each being closed off at the right hand end. Pistons (3) and coiled compression springs (2) slide within the two aforementioned borings, compression SpTingS (2) being part captured within the hollow centres of pistons (3).
Link rod (7) slides within damping device (a), which is itself secured within housing (1) when assembled. Link rod (7) is connected at its right hand end to the stationary frame of the door (not shown). Pistons (3) and link rod (7) are bolted together at the loft hand end by means of connecting plate (4) and bolts (5) and (6).
The assembly of pistons (3), link rod (7) and connecting plate (4) slide as a unit within housing (1) When the door is pushed open, link rod (7), which is attached to the stationary door frame at its right hand end, is caused to travel in the direction of the anow, causing pistons (3) to compress coiled springs (2) constrained within the closed borings within housing (1). When the user releases the door, coiled compression springs (2) exert a force via pistons (3), connecting plate I) and link rod (7) tending to pull the door into the closed position. The door closing and latching speed is controlled by damping device (8) through which link rod (7) passes.
The sectional drawing figure 2 shows, one of the pistons (3) shding within its boring in housing (1). Details ofthe other piston are identical. Piston (3) contains an axial boring (12), the boring being threaded at the open end and having a reduced plain section at the blind end. Fitted within this boring is a tapered adjustment screw (9) which is capable of being rotated within boring ( 12) of piston (3) by means of, for example, a screwdriver or alien key, so as to move up or down boring (12).
Piston (3) also contains two radial, diametrically opposed borings as shown, each housing a spring (10) and hardened ball (I 1) as shown. The bottom of spring (10) bears upon the tapered portion oftapered adjustment screw (9), which when rotated into boring (12) compresses spring (10). In torn spring (10) applies a radial force upon ball (l 1), increasing the friction between the ball and the inner walls ofthe boring within housing (1) as tapered adjustment screw (9) moves further into boring (12).
In use, the assembled door closer '!nit initially has the two tapered adjustment screws (9) set fully out (minimum friction position) and is then fitted into the edge of the door, link rod (7) being coupled up to the adjacent door frame. The closing action of the door closer is assessed, and if the closure force is considered inadequate, the door closer is removed from the door and tapered adjustment screws (9) rotated out of their borings to reduce the friction between balls (1 1) and the walls of housing (1). The unit can then be refitted and its performance reassessed.

Claims (7)

LAMS
1 An automatic door closer containing one or more compression spnugs to provide a closing force and containing one or more restricting device(s) placed within the force path so as to limit the closing force to a desired level.
2 An automatic door closer as described in claim 1 whereby the closure force may be set during installation by adjusting the performance of the restricting device.
3 A restricting device as described in claim 1 which relies upon friction to control the closing force.
4 A restricting device as described in claim 3 whereby the friction may be generated by one or more spring loaded rolling balls as generally illustrated in figures I and 2.
A restricting device as described in claim 4 whereby the level of friction may be adjusted by compressing or relaxing the aforementioned springs as generally illustrated in figures 1 and2.
6 restricting device as described in claim 3 whereby the friction may be generated by one or more sprung sliding elements.
7 A restricting device as described in claim 6 whereby the friction may be adjusted by varying the pressure exerted between the aforementioned sprung slic-ling elements.
