Abstract
A laboratory thermostat has an early warning system with an electronic regulating/safety device 5 for monitoring the lower level of the liquid in the bath vessel and an evaluating device at least for a visual and/or acoustic warning signal which may be emitted while the temperature control process continues. The level of the liquid is monitored by a float 10 with electrical switching elements 11, 12. Switching element 12, when activated, serves to provide an early warning that the liquid level in the vessel is getting low, and emits a warning via buzzer 6 to alert a user of the thermostat to top-up the vessel with liquid.
Description
83498.623 Laboratory Thermostat The invention relates to a laboratory
thermostat having a heating and/or cooling device for controlling the temperature of a liquid bath medium contained in a bath vessel.
Laboratory thermostats are used for high-precision temperature control and maintaining an adjustable constant temperature. The main functional elements are the heater, circulating pump and electronic regulating means. The temperature control liquid is contained in a bath vessel. The temperature control medium used is water, bath oil for higher temperatures or alcoholic liquids for minus temperatures.
Laboratory thermostats are used both for internal temperature control tasks in the bath vessel and also for the external temperature control of a consuming device using an integral circulating pump. The temperature control of external measuring and analytical system equipment, reaction systems or measuring cells in a temperature control circuit are the main applications in science and
research and in many fields of industry.
Liquid may be lost as a result of the evaporation of the bath medium used or as a result of leaks occurring in the external circuit. If a built-in lower level safety device is used this automatically causes the system to shut down.
However, shutting down may cause problems with the treatment. For example, when the temperature of bacterial cultures is being controlled internally - 2 - in a bath vessel there is a risk that these bacterial cultures will be irrevocably destroyed by a sudden interruption to the temperature control process. Moreover, in external processes, an interruption to the temperature control may mean that the entire process has to be repeated, at corresponding expense.
There is therefore a disadvantage in such known laboratory thermostats in that problems may be caused by premature unintentional shutting down of the laboratory thermostat by means of the lower level safety device.
According to the invention there is provided a laboratory thermostat with a heating and/or cooling device for controlling the temperature of a liquid bath medium contained in a bath vessel, wherein the laboratory thermostat comprises an early warning system with a device for monitoring a lower level of the liquid bath medium in the bath vessel, and an evaluating device to provide at least an acoustic and/or visual warning signal, while continuing with the temperature control process.
The integrated early warning system alerts the user of the laboratory thermostat to the fact that the liquid level has fallen, in good time before the system is undesirably shut down by a lower level safety device, so that the temperature control liquid, i.e. the liquid bath medium, can be topped up immediately before the safety cutout is actuated by a lower level safety device.
Additional embodiments of the invention are recited in the subsidiary claims. - 3
Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a partly cut-away side view of a laboratory thermostat with early warning system; Fig. 2 shows a front view; and Fig.3 shows a rear view of the laboratory thermostat in Figs. 1 and 2.
A laboratory thermostat as shown in the drawings has electronic regulating/safety means 5 with a monitoring device for monitoring the lower level of liquid in the bath vessel and an evaluating device at least for a visual and/or acoustic warning signal.
It also comprises a temperature sensor 6, a heater 7, a submersible pump 8 with external pump connections 9, a float 10 with electrical switching element 11 which can perform a shutting down function, particularly a safety cut-out.
The novel early warning system has another switching element 12. The electronic regulating/ safety means 5 comprises a buzzer 13 for a pulsed acoustic signal actuation and is electrically connected to the switching element 12 and the switching element 11 which triggers a shutdown function with a continuous signal tone.
The early warning system is integrated in the heating/cooling thermostat (Fig. 2) and in recirculating coolers with a membrane keyboard 14 arranged in a circle, a VFD information display 15, - 4 - a mains switch 16, an adjustable overheating safety device 17 and a visual display of warning and safety functions 18. On the reverse (Fig. 3) there are connections for Pt 100 external sensors 19, a refrigeration control 20 and an interface 21 through which an early warning function can be communicated to the outside. )
