Abstract

Thermionic receivers for line telegraphy. - A submarine cable is terminated at the receiving end in a high impedance so that the voltage component of the signal predominates. The reduction in signal response due to an artificial line in duplex systems or to a balancing circuit is thus eliminated. The Figure shows a cable 8 with a balancing circuit consisting of a length 10 of cable, a resistance 11 and earth 13 simulating the impedance of the cable. The cable terminates in a high impedance 15 and is connected thereto by a condenser 20 of low impedance to signalling frequencies. The impedance 15 is connected across the grid and filament of a thermionic valve amplifier A which reconverts the voltage into current for operating a siphon recorder 16. The impedance 15 is from 3,000 to 6,000 ohms for a cable with an impedance of 400 ohms. A switch 9 enables either the receiving circuit or a transmitter T to be connected to the cable.
