Abstract

A pin (e.g. drawing pin) 10 includes a pointed shaft 11 and a head or skirt 12. An axially extending body 13 extends away from the head or skirt 12 and has an element 14 mounted on it. The element 14 defines lateral extensions 15, 16 that can be used to assist insertion or withdrawal of the pin 10 in a surface. The extensions 15, 16 may be shaped to form a hook or eyelet.

Description

Fastener or pin This invention relates to fasteners or pins and tools for
inserting such fasteners or pins.
A variety of fasteners and pins for supporting pictures, posters and decorations, such as Christmas decorations, are known. These include drawing pins, mapping pins, cup hooks and eyelets. As anyone who has had to insert or remove a large number of drawing pins, which are also known as thumb tacks in the United States, will know, they only provide secure location if pressed right into a surface, which can often lead to bent shafts and sore thumbs and almost always leads to broken fingernails or damaged surfaces, when the pin is to be removed. Further such pins can be difficult to manipulate for people with certain disabilities. Conversely mapping pins are easily inserted and removed, but because they have very little lateral surface contact, they provide an insubstantial location. Cup hooks and eyelets are often difficult to insert, because relatively little torque is available and it is frequently difficult to prevent the screw shaft becoming inclined to the surface in which it is being inserted.
From one aspect the invention consists in a fastener or pin including a pointed shaft for penetrating a surface and a head or skirt on the shaft for limiting penetration of the shaft characterized in that the head or skirt carries, on the other side to the shaft, at least a pair of generally elongate extensions, which extend laterally with respect to the axis of the shaft for engagement by a tool or the like to enhance insertion and/or removal of the fastener or pin.
It will be appreciated that by providing these extensions a means is available for gripping which significantly assist in insertion and/or removal, whilst still enabling the fastener or pin to have a full head or skirt to engage the surface and provide good location and stability.
It is generally preferred that the extensions do not extend beyond the periphery of the head or skirt and it is particularly preferred that they stop short of that periphery. As will be indicated below, this arrangement enables the extensions to be engaged by a tool whilst allowing the tool to press fully down on the head or skirt.
The extensions are preferably spaced axially from the head or skirt and may conveniently be carried on a body extending axially from the other side of the head or skirt, this body may be a continuation of the shaft.
At least one extension may form, with the body, a hook and the body and/or an extension may define an eyelet.
The shaft may be round or oblate in section and may carry barbs.
The head or skirt and the extensions may be formed as at least part of a single integral moulding, e.g. of plastics. In that case, from above, the extensions may be constituted by a generally ablate element.
From another aspect the invention consists in a fastener or pin having a shaft having a point for penetrating a surface, the shaft extending through the head or skirt and carrying lateral extensions on the other side of the head or skirt from the point.
From a still further aspect the invention consists in a tool for inserting a fastener or pin as defined above having a hollow head with formations for receiving and releasably retaining the extensions, and hence the fastener or pin, and an end for pressing on the head or skirt, whilst the fastener or pin is
-
retained.
The tool may include a resilient plunger for aiding insertion of the fastener or pin or it may include an operable plunger or a compress air channel for acting on the fastener or pin to insert it in a surface.
In any of these cases the tool may include a body mounted on the head to provide a grip, in which case the body may be hollow for containing pins or fasteners.
Although the invention has been defined above, it is to be understood it includes any inventive combination of the features set out above or in the
following description.
The invention may be formed in various ways and specific embodiments will now be described, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of one embodiment of a fastener or a pin; Figure 2 is a view from the pointed end or bottom of the fastener; Figure 3 is a view on the arrow A of the fastener of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a plan view from above of the fastener of Figure 1; Figures 5 to 8 are views corresponding to Figure 1 of further respective embodiments of fasteners or pins; and Figure 9A shows a tool for inserting a fastener or pin, Figure 9B illustrates the end of the tool when viewed from below and Figure 9C illustrates an internal feature when the end is viewed from the side.
Referring first to Figures 1 to 4 a fastener or pin 10 includes a pointed shaft 11, a head or skirt 12, an axially extending body 13 and an element 14, \ which is mounted on the body 13 and defines lateral extensions 15 and 16.
As can best be seen in Figure 4, the element 14 is generally ablate and lies within the periphery of the skirt or head 12, although the element 14 may extend beyond the skirt or head 12, if, for example a large hook is required.
That portion of the fastener or pin 10 which is encompassed within circle 17 will act as a hook, when the fastener or pin 10 is inserted in the surface, whereas that part which is contained within the circle 18 can serve as an eyelet.
It will thus be appreciated that the fastener or pin 10 is multifunctional and can be used like an ordinary drawing pin to attach paper or a decoration to a surface or it can be inserted in a surface to provide a hook and/or eyelet. Barbs 19 are provided on the shaft 11 to enhance location of the fastener or pin in a surface. This arrangement is preferred where "permanent" location is required.
A barb-less version is illustrated in Figure 7. The shaft may be oval or oblate in section, so that if the pin 10 is rotated a quarter turn, extraction is made much 1 5 easier.
Figures 5 and 6 respectively are a barb-less and barbed version of an alternative construction which does not include the eyelet and Figure 8 illustrates an arrangement similar to Figure 5 but it will be noted that the body 13 has been reduced to a rod and for manufacturing simplicity and cheapness. In that case (for example) the body 13 may be constituted by an extension of the shaft 11.
Indeed the extensions 15, 16 could simply be lateral rods and that is true for the other embodiments where a pin could simply be inserted through the body 13 or the body 13 could be moulded with rod-like extensions.
However, the particular arrangement shown is preferred, because it not only provides a smooth, aesthetic appearance, multi-functions and is relatively easy gripped for manual removal, it also enables the fastener or pin to be particularly suitable for removal by means of a tool. One example of an appropriate tool is illustrated in Figures 9a to c. It will be seen, particularly in Figure 9b, that the tool 20 has a head 21, which has an open mouth at 22 that communicates with a bayonet style fixing 23. The element 14 can pass through the mouth 22 and the extensions 15, 16 can be releasably retained in the bayonet fixing 23 simply by rotating the tool. Thus, in use, a pin or fastener 10 is I inserted into the head 21 to be retained therein and then the tool is correctly orientated opposite the surface in which the fastener or pin 10 is to be inserted.
Longitudinal pressure is applied, by means of the handle 24 and, because the element 14 lies within the periphery of the head or skirt 12, this pressure can be applied directly onto the head or skirt 12 giving good stable circumferential pressure enabling easy insertion of the pin with the shaft at right angles to the surface.
Conversely, when it is desired to remove the pin, the head 21 is presented to the pin so that the extensions 15, 16 are once more located in the bayonet fixing 23 and the pin can easily be pulled out by pulling the head 21 away from the surface. The handle 24 may be hollow for containing fasteners or pins 10, which can be accessed through a door 25. The tool can enable someone with a manual disability to pick up or remove the pin 10, without having to touch the pin with their fingers.
As can be seen in Figure 9 a sprung plunger 26 may be provided to assist the retention of the fastener or pin 10 in the head. The tool could include an operable plunger for assisting insertion or it may be pneumatic. Such arrangements would be well understood in the art. I Variations on the pin can be used for fastening a piece of wood or the like together, in which case the body 13 may be weakened or scored circumferentially so that it can readily be broken away using the tool to remove the protruding portion of the pin.
The presence of extensions 15, 16 mean that if the pin 10 is dropped, it will not lie with its point facing upwardly, as can occur with drawing pins.
