Abstract

A patch assembly for securing medical tubing (3) or the like comprises a patch (1) of moisture-permeable material with a self-adhesive hydrogel layer and a retaining strip (2) of polyurethane film - foam laminate which bridges the tubing (3) and is releasably secured to the patch by a suitable adhesive. The retaining strip (2) can be released and reattached in a different orientation (2') to allow the orientation of the tubing (3) to be adjusted.

Description

PATCH ASSEMBLY FOR RETAINING MEDICAL TUBING OR THE LIKE
The present invention relates to a patch assembly for retaining medical tubing or the like against the skin of a human or animal patient.
W099/37353 discloses a clamp for securing a catheter or the like to the skin of a patient and is in the form of a patch composed of two portions of adhesive tape, a first portion being folded onto a V-shape with its adhesive layer on the outside of the V and the portion overlapping one limb of the V in contact with the adhesive layer to form a laminate and extending away from to the fold. The adhesive layer on the other limb of the V and the adjacent exposed adhesive layer on the second portion are affixed to the skin of a patient and a foam pad lying on the upper surface of the second portion and bridging the fold is enfolded around a catheter or the like by folding back the laminate about the fold line of the V and securing together the resulting facing Is portions of the second tape portion with pads of hook and loop fastener material. ! However, the above arrangement has the disadvantage that it cannot be repositioned (to reorient the catheter) without removing the patch from the skin of the patient, which is inconvenient and liable to cause discomfort to the go patient.
Furthermore, the construction of the above patch assembly is somewhat complex which increases manufacturing costs.
An object of the present invention is to overcome or alleviate at least some of the above disadvantages.
Accordingly the invention provides a patch assembly for retaining medical tubing or the like against the skin of a patient, the assembly comprising the combination of: a) a patch having means for securing one surface thereof to said skin; so b) a retaining strip for passing over said tubing or the like, and c) releasable securing means arranged in use to secure said retaining strip in a reorientable manner on an opposite surface of said patch.
Preferably the means for securing one surface of said patch comprises s a skin-compatible layer of adhesive on said one surface.
Preferably the adhesive is a hydrogel or a medical grade acrylic adhesive. The hydrogel or medical grade acrylic adhesive provides a more sympathetic release of the adhesion from the skin.
Preferably said releasable securing means comprises a layer of to adhesive on said strip. However, in other embodiments the patch can be in the form of a strap which in use can extend round the limb of a patient and the two ends can be secured together by any convenient means, e.g. a buckle or regions of hook and loop fastener material.
A particularly preferred material for the patch is a laminate of moisture s permeable polyurethane film with a self-adhesive layer of polyacrylamide based hydrogel. Patches of this type are commercially available from First Water Ltd., Ramsburg, Marlborough, Wiltshire, UK.
Preferably, the retaining strip comprises a polyurethane foam film laminate with an adhesive layer of hydrogel or medical grade acrylic. Such a ho retaining strip can be released and repositioned on the polyurethane film of the underlying patch without significant loss of adhesion.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is described below by way of example only with reference to Figures 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings, wherein: as Figure 1 is a schematic transverse cross-section through a patch assembly in accordance with the invention when used to retain medical tubing in position; Figure 2 is a schematic plan view showing the patch assembly of Figure 1; and so Figure 3 is a schematic transverse cross-section showing the patch assembly of Figure 1 during assembly and application to a patient's skin.
Referring to Figure 1, the assembly comprises a patch 1 of Hydroskin comprising a moisture-permeable polyurethane film 5 and a self-adhesive hydrogel layer 4 which comprises 70% polyacrylamide-based acrylic polymer with a humectant and 30% water. This gel is permeable to water vapour, s gases and small protein molecules and provides an effective barrier against external contamination. The patch 1 is secured with this adhesive to the surface of a patient's limb e.g. to the forearm. The tubing 3 is bridged by a retaining strip 2 comprising an outer polyurethane film 8, an inner resilient polyurethane foam layer 7 and a layer of adhesive 6 of hydrogel or medical to grade acrylic. This thickness of the polyurethane foam layer is suitably 300 to 500 microns.
As best seen in Figure 2, the retaining strip 2 bridges the tubing 3 with its terminal portions in contact with the exposed upper surface of patch 1 and can be repositioned as indicated at 2' and 3' in order to enable the tubing 3 to be reoriented. Release and re-adhesion of the ends of the retaining strip does not involve significant loss of adhesion.
Figure 3 shows the application of the patch 1 and retaining strip 2 to the wrist W of a patient after removing these components from a sterile package (not shown).
so The patch 1 is supplied with separate release liner strips 9, one of which is folded and overlies the other on its under surface and similar release liners 10 on its upper surface. The former are first removed as indicated by arrows a to allow the patch to be adhered to the wrist surface and then the latter are peeled away as indicated by arrows b to enable the retaining strip 2 to be attached to the upper surface of patch 1 following the peeling away of its release liner 11 as indicated by arrow_. The application of retaining strip 2 is indicated generally by arrow d and involves bridging medical tubing 3 to form the assembly shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The packaged assembly can be sterilised by gamma irradiation for
so example.
In a variant, the adhesive layer 6 (Figure 1) could be formed on the upper surface of the patch 1 rather than on the lower surface of retaining strip 2. In a further variant the retaining strip 2 could be secured to the upper surface of patch 1 by hook and loop material, although this is less preferred.
In a further variant, patch 1 could be in the form of a strap extending around a patient's limb with its two end portions secured together by any convenient means such as a buckle or regions of hook and loop material.
The described patch assembly is convenient in use and can be manufactured at low cost.
lo It will be noted that the patch assembly described above can also be used for securing other elongate medical apparatus such as a catheter or wiring (e.g. to electrodes or the like) as well as medical tubing. s
