Abstract

A hand held sanding apparatus comprises means for holding the apparatus, a substantially planar semi-rigid support member and an abrasive sheet, wherein the holding means is attached to one face of the support member and the abrasive sheet is attached to the other face of the support member. The abrasive sheet may be attached to the support member using hook and loop fasteners, adhesive or be bonded or moulded thereon.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The invention concerns a hand-held and hand-operated device used in conjunction with an abrasive surface for the purpose of removing material, paint, rust and other surface 'objectionables' and for the smoothing, feathering, profiling, polishing and/or finishing of contours, surfaces, edges of materials such as balsa-wood, wood, fibreglass, plastic, metals weldslbrazing and glue joints and any other type of surface or surface material.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention comprises a hand-held sanding device formed by a handle of rigid or semi-rigid thermo-plastic, elastomeric, metal, wooden or of some other material type forming an ergonomic gnp.
The basic handle can be of any of several cellular and non-cellular materials either solid, cast; injection moulded rotationally cast or any other means of manufacture, forming or fabrication.
The intermediate surface between the handle and the abrasive-working surface can be incorporated in the moulding or forming of the handle or can be separately formed to give a semi-rigid, flexible, contoured, flat, profiled, shaped or otherwise abrasive mounting surface.
The material can be of the same type as the handle or can be of any type suitable to give the desired degree of rigidity or flexibility.
The abrasive/polishing surface can be of a hook and loop type, selfadhesive, bonded, moulded or otherwise manufactured or introduced to give the preferred type of abrasive surface. The selection of the material to give the abrasive surface can be from any, but not limited to, commercially available, custom designed or other source. g.

DESCRIPTION OF FIG1 EMBODIMENT
The embodiment of the hand-held sander FIG Iconsists of a handle (A1) formed to give an ergonomic hold that will assist with the presentation of the working surface abrasive material to the work area. The material used may be of rigid or semi-rigid cellular or non-cellular material solid, cast, injection moulded, rotationally cast or any other means of manufacture or fabrication. The abrasive surface(A3) material that is of self adhesive, bonded glued, cast hook and loop, laminated or arty other type of fastenment shall be part of the semi-flexible, flexible, rigid, contoured or shaped surface (A2)that is part of the working surface of the embodiment.
DESCRIPTION OF FIG2 EMBODIMENT
The embodiment of the hand-held sander FIG 2consists of a handle (Bl) formed to give an ergonomic hold that will assist with the presentation of the working surface abrasive material to the work area. The material used may be of rigid or semi-rigid cellular or non-cellular material solid, cast, injection moulded, rotationally cast or any other means of manufacture or fabrication. The abrasive surface(B2) material that is of self adhesive, bonded glued, cast hook and loop, laminated or any other type of fastenment shall be part of the semi-flexible, flexible, rigid, contoured or shaped surface that is part of the working surface of the embodiment.
DESCRIPTION OF FIG 3 EMBODIMENT
The embodiment of the hand-held sander FIG 3consists of a handle (Cl) formed to give an ergonomic hold that will assist with the presentation of the working surface abrasive material to the work area. The material used may be of rigid or semi-rigid cellular or non-cellular material solid, cast, injection moulded, rotationally cast or any other means of manufacture or fabrication. The abrasive surface (C2) material that is of self adhesive, bonded glued, cast hook and loop, laminated or any other type of fastenment shall be part of the semi-flexible, flexible, rigid, contoured or shaped surface that is part of the working surface of the embodiment.
DESCRIPTION OF FIG 4 EMBODIMENT
The embodiment of the hand-held sander FIG 4consists of a fastenment (D3) formed to give an adjustable ergonomic hold that will assist with the presentation of the working surface abrasive material to the work area. The material used may be of rigid or semi-rigid cellular or non-cellular material solid, cast, injection moulded, rotationally cast or any other means of manufacture or fabrication. The abrasive surface (Dl) material that is of self adhesive, bonded glued, cast, hook and loop, laminated or any other type of fastenment shall be part of the semi-flexible, flexible, rigid, contoured or shaped surface(D2) that is part of the working surface of the embodiment.

Claims (1)

1. A hand operated sanding apparatus, comprising a means for holding the apparatus, a substantially planar semi-rigid member and an abrasive sheet, one surface of the semi-rigid member is attached to the means for holding the apparatus and the other surface is attached to the abrasive sheet, the semi-rigid member is of suitable rigidity such that in use the semi-rigid member flexes while still supplying suficient pressure to achieve abrasion of the surface being sanded
