Abstract

A line drag reduction device, which includes a disc 1 that has a central bearing 3 inserted into it. The underside of the disc is preferably sealed by another disc 2. The line drag reduction device sits atop a rimmed or rimless spool, its diameter being greater than the top rim of the spool. The device is located centrally on the threaded spool spindle 7 and affixed to the spindle by a drag tensioning knob 4. A series of holes 5, 6 are made in the device to facilitate the lubricating of the bearing and the outer rim of the device. The outer rim is lubricated by way of the centrifugal action of the spinning disc forcing the lubricant to the outer rim. This lubrication may also be manually applied to the bearing and the outer rim as required.

Description

23982 1 8 Line drag reduction device.
The invention relates to a drag reduction system for spools, possibly fishing reel spools, that can be added to any existing reel spool or incorporated into a newly manufactured reel spool.
When a cast is made the line, when unwinding off the reel spool, is initially drag free of the rim of the reel spool due to the location of the wound line, being wound around the spool so as to fill the spool and thus be near the edge of the top rim. As the line unwinds with the cast the location of the line on the spool moves towards the centre of the spool and thus drag is caused by the top rim of the spool. The drag reduction device reduces the drag caused by the top rim of the spool.
The objective of the invention is to reduce spool top rim line drag when casting.
Accordingly this invention provides a rotating top rim on reel spools that has a central freewheeling bearing and lubrication holes drilled accordingly. The invention is located centrally on top of any reel spool by way of a central thread. Lisually in situ.
The device can be made from a combination of plastics and steel, as for the bearings.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE I shows a side and plan view of the separated component parts of the device.
FIGURE 2 shows a side and plan view illustrating the device and it's lubrication holes and with parts assembled together and positioned above a spool.
FIGURE 3 Shows a side and plan view.of the device sitting atop a spool and/or manufactured into the top of a spool and with the line moving off the spool and rumling along the rim of the Disc 1 radially and axially.
As shown in Figure I, the device comprises of a Disc I, an underside disc 2, a central bearing 3, drag tension knob 4.
As showil in Figure 2, the parts are arranged with the central bearing 3 fitting up to the Disc 1, Disc 2 is fitted up under central bearing and into disc 1, As shown in Figure 3 the device is pushed on to the top of the spool and located centrally via an existing central thread and kept atop by the drag tensioner knob 4. The line 8 comes off the spool and should it rub against the rim 9, of the spool disc I shell Disc I spins in the same direction of the line radially, thus radially reducing drag and oil is centrifugally pushed through the lubricating holes, Figure 1/5 in the rim of Disc I thus lubricating the line axially.
Tension knob 4 is screwed down on to the top of Disc I via the existing reel spool 8, central thread 7.
As shown in Figure I, Disc I has a series of holes or ports 5, drilled roughly centrally around its rim. Also on the top of Disc I is a lubricant filler hole 6. Any lubricant fed into the filler hole will find it's way to the central bearing thus lubricating it and will also find it's way along the port hole to lubricate the outer rim of Disc 1.

Claims (2)

  1. Claims.
A line drag reduction device comprising a disc and a low friction bearing, both mounted adjacent a spool containing line, the disc and low friction bearing are arranged such that in use line fed from the spool in an axial direction makes contact with a radial edge of the disc causing it to rotate
  2. 2.
A line drag reduction device as claimed in claim I including a series of lubrication portsAloles in the disc.
A line drag reduction device as claimed in claim I & 2 where the disc is kept atop of the spool with a knob that threads on to the central thread. 4.
A line drag reduction device as claimed in any preceding claim where the drag reduction device sits atop a purpose made spool or an existing spool whereas when it sits atop and existing spool that would have a top rim then the disc will have a diameter greater than the diameter of the spool top rim.
A line drag reduction device as claimed in any preceding claim whereas the drag reduction device disc may envelope entirely the rim of an existing spool top nm. 6.
A line drag reduction device as claimed in any preceding claim which is made front metal, plastics material or wood, or a combination of these materials.
A line drag reduction device substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
