Abstract
A composition for removal of metals from solution the composition including manganese and iron oxides, hydroxides and oxyhydroxides, and phosphate. The composition may contain iron and manganese in the ratio of about 2 moles manganese to 1 mole iron and may contain phosphate in the amount 3 to 15% of the combined amount of manganese and iron. The composition may be coated onto a lightweight granular substrate such as perlite, plastic discs, polystyrene, glass fibre, charcoal or chitin. A coated substrate may be prepared by providing a substrate; wetting the substrate with a coating solution of manganese and iron salts containing phosphate and oxidising the solution to cause a coating comprising manganese and iron oxides, hydroxides and oxyhydroxides, and potassium to be precipitated onto the surface of the substrate.
Description
REMOVAL OF METALS FROM SOLUTION
The present invention relates to a composition for removal of metals, particularly although not exclusively, heavy metals, from solution, to a substrate coated with the composition, and to the manufacture and use of the composition and coated substrate.
There are many situations where it is desired to remove metals from solution.
Two important cases are the removal of heavy metal pollutants and the recovery of precious metals from water.
A number of different technologies are available for the removal of metal pollution from water. One method is the use of metal oxides to adsorb metals from the water. It is with this method that the present invention is concerned.
According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a composition for removal of metals from solution the composition comprising manganese and iron oxides, hydroxides and oxyLydroxides, and phosphate.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a substrate coated with a composition comprising manganese and iron oxides, hydroxides and oxyhydroxides and phosphate, the substrate being for use in the removal of metals from solution.
According to another aspect ofthe present invention there is provided a method of manufacture of a coated substrate for use in the removal of metals from solution comprising the steps of: providing a substrate; wetting the substrate with a solution of manganese and iron salts containing phosphate and oxidising the solution to cause a coating comprising manganese and iron oxides, hydroxides and oxyhydroxides, and potassium to be precipitated onto the surface of the substrate. -
Claims (20)
- Claims 1. A composition for removal of metals from solution thecomposition comprising manganese and iron oxides, hydroxides and oxyhydroxides, and phosphate.
- 2. A composition as claimed in clam I comprising iron and manganese in the ratio of about 2 moles manganese to 1 mole iron.
- 3. A composition as claimed in either claim I or 2 comprising phosphate in the amount 3 to 15% of the combined amount of manganese and iron.
- 4. A composition as claimed in any preceding claim comprising phosphate in the amount 3 to 9% of the combined amount of manganese and iron.
- 5. A substrate coated with a composition as claimed in any preceding claim, the substrate being for use in the removal of metals from solution.
- 6. A substrate as claimed in claim 5 comprising a granular material.
- 7. A substrate as claimed in either claim 5 or 6 comprising one or more of the following materials: perlite, plastic discs, polystyrene, glass fibre, charcoal and chitin.
- 8. A method of manufacture of a coated substrate as claimed in any of claims 5 to 7 comprising the steps of: providing a substrate; wetting the substrate with a coating solution of manganese and iron salts containing, phosphate and oxidising the solution to cause a coating comprising manganese and iron oxides, hydroxides and oxyhydroxides, and potassium to be precipitated onto the surface of the substrate.
- 9. A method as claimed in claim 8 wherein the substrate is wetted with a coating solution comprising a combination of magnesium and iron sulphates or nitrates or chlorides and sodium or potassium phosphate.
- 10. A method as claimed in either claim 8 or 9 wherein the substrate is be etched prior -
- 11 to wetting with the coating solution.1 1. A method as claimed in claim 10 wherein the substrate is etched by wetting with a sodium hydroxide solution.
- 12 A method as claimed in any of claims 8 to 1 I wherein the coating solution is oxidised by further wetting the wetted substrate with an oxidising agent.
- 13. A method as claimed in claim 12 wherein the oxidising solution is sodium or potassium hydroxide solution.
- 14. A method as claimed in either claim 12 or 13 wherein, after oxidising, the substrate is allowed to partially dry before a further application of coating solution followed by oxidising agent.
- 15. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein the coated substrate is further etched before further application of coating solution.
- 16. A method as claimed in any of claims 8 to 15 wherein the substrate is dried in warm air to accelerate both drying and oxidisation of the solution.
- 17 A method as claimed in any of claims 8 to 15 wherein at least three applications of coating solution are made to build up the coating on the substrate.
- 18. The use of a composition as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4 or a substrate as claimed in any of claim 5 to 7 to clean up industrial pollution and/or naturally occurring pollution.
- 19. The use of a composition as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4 or a substrate as claimed in any of claim 5 to 7 to scavenge precious metals.
- 20. A coated substrate substantially as herein described in any of examples I to 3.
