Abstract

A laparoscopic tissue dissecting hernia repair balloon kit including a balloon for attachment to a laparoscope and a tie for securing the balloon thereon, a balloon inflating device and a navigating device which helps to position the balloon before dissection. Preferably the laparoscope has ports of different sizes and permits suction irrigation. The balloon inflator may have a stop valve, and it may be connected to the side port of the laparoscope. The balloon tie may be a thread or rubber to provide an air tight seal. The balloon may be made of rubber and/or plastic, it may be transparent or opaque and of various sizes. The navigator may be made of metal and/or plastic. The balloon may be disposable, but the other kit parts may be reusable preventing wastage.

Description

1 2397023 LAPAROSCOPIC (TISSUE DISSECTING) HERNIA REPAIR BALLOON The
invention relates to a laparoscopic hernia repair balloon, which can be used with the existing laparoscopic instruments in laparoscopic surgery. This includes a balloon and a balloon-directing device (balloon navigator) , without having a completely disposable balloon kit.
A commercially available balloon kit for laparoscopic hernia repair is well known and used, but suffers from the disadvantage that, when they are used they have to be used with a disposable unit. The balloons cannot be used by attaching them with the existing non-disposable laparoscopic instruments. A big portion of the balloon kit is disposed off after use. My device reduces unnecessary wastage.
An object of this invention is to provide a safe and reliable method of dissection of tissue planes in laparoscopic surgery via a balloon which has a very minimum disposable unit and which can be used with existing laparoscopic instruments (e.g.3mm, 5mm or 10mm ports or suction irrigation unit).
Accordingly, this invention provides a laparoscopic balloon dissector including a balloon directing device (balloon navigator) and a ballooninflating component and balloon tying material.
Preferably the balloon is made of transparent latex or latex free material (only disposable unit), the director of balloon is either made of plastic or metal (Non disposable) and the balloon-inflating component made of rubber or plastic.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing and pictures in which: Figure 1 shows a balloon dissector, which dissects central tissue planes Figure 2 is showing right-sided tilted balloon for right-sided laparoscopic hernia repair (Same balloon can be used for the left sided laparoscopic hernia repair by positioning the tilted side towards left) Figure 3 shows a kidney shaped balloon for bi-lateral laparoscopic hernia repair.
Figure 4 shows a navigator of balloon with a blunt end and a wider end.
Figure 5 shows a balloon-inflating device with a stopcock mechanism. i) Figure 6 shows an Elastoplast type-tying device with thread. a) Figure 7 shows a 10mm port (non disposable unit) a balloon dissector, a balloon navigator, elasoplast and thread and a balloon-inflating device.
Picture 1 shows what it will look like when the balloon is attached to the suction imgation component and inflated.
As shown in Figure 1,2 and 3 the balloons comprise of different shapes and sizes according to the site and size of hernia or tissue planes needed to be dissected. For the right-sided hernia repair a right tilted balloon will be used. For bilateral hernia repair a kidney shaped balloon will be used.
As shown in figure 4 the balloon placement device (balloon navigator) will have a blunt end and wider flat end. The blunt end will direct the balloon exactly at the site where dissection is needed.
As shown in Figure 5 the balloon-inflating device will allow air to go inside the balloon when inflation is needed and an opening valve will allow air to escape from balloon when deflation is needed.
As shown in Figure 6 the tying material will be either an Elastoplast type material or made of thread, to tie the open end of the balloon after attaching to the existing laparoscopic instruments.
Figure 7 shows that the balloon is attached to the laparoscopic instruments. The tip of the 5mm or 10 mm port is passed through the open end of the balloon and then a tie is tied around the open end to prevent any leak of air from the balloon. Balloon placement device is also seen here passing through the 10 mm port. A balloon- inflating device also attached to the side cannel of 10mm laparoscopic port.
A suction irrigation instrument can also be used to attach a balloon for tissue dissection as shown in Picture 1.
Picture 1 shows what it will look like when the balloon is attached to the suction irrigation component with an inflated balloon.

Claims (9)

1. A laparoscopic tissue dissecting hemia repair balloon kit including a balloon, attaching to the laparoscopic instruments, and a ballooninflating device to inflate the balloon via laparoscopic instruments and a tying material to tie the balloon to the laparoscopic instruments and a balloon-navigating device so that the balloon can be positioned properly before dissection of the tissue plane.
2. A laparoscopic tissue dissecting hemia repair balloon kit as claimed in Claim 1 where the laparoscopic instruments include laparoscopic ports of different sizes (5mm, 1 Omm) and also suction irrigation instruments.
3. A laparoscopic tissue dissecting hemia repair balloon kit as claimed in Claim 1 where the balloon-inflating device has a stop valve mechanism to direct air to the balloon via laparoscopic instruments.
4. A laparoscopic tissue dissecting hemia repair balloon kit as claimed in Claim 3 where the balloon-inflating device is connected to the side port of laparoscopic instruments for inflating the balloon.
5. A laparoscopic tissue dissecting hemia repair balloon kit as claimed in Claim 1 where the tying material is either a thread or rubber to tie the open end of the balloon to the laparoscopic instruments to prevent air leak from the balloon after inflation.
6. A laparoscopic tissue dissecting hemia repair balloon kit as claimed in Claim 1 where the balloon navigator is passed through the laparoscopic ports to direct the balloon, once introduced inside the tissue planes for a proper area of tissue dissection for repair of hernias.
7. A balloon as claimed in any preceding claim, which is made from rubber, plastic or from a combination of these materials and either transparent or opaque and different sizes depending on the site of operation.
8. A balloon navigator as claimed in any preceding claim, which is made from metal, plastic or from a combination of these materials.
9. A laparoscopic tissue dissecting hemia repair balloon kit substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
