Abstract

A portable electric light that is carried on a person's back and wholly supported by means other than the arms or head, with the light source (3) positioned in a high elevation predominantly at the same height or above the users head on an adjustable, extendable mast (2), and with the battery (1) positioned at or close to waist level.

Description

Mast Mounted Light Description
This invention relates to portable electric lighting.
In order to see in dark conditions, it is usual for a person to carry a hand held electric torch. Torches of this kind comprise of a case which is held in the hand and which houses a battery, and a light source.
The amount of light that the light source of an electric torch can emit is dependent on the capacity of the battery.
The total area that a torch can illuminate is affected by the position of the light source.
Increasing battery capacity has the effect of increasing the mass of the battery.
Conventional hand held torches become uncomfortable and tiring to carry if they are fitted with heavy batteries.
The light emitted by a conventional torch held in the hand is not used to maximum effect since it is carried low down around the users waist height. In order to make better use of the light emitted by a torch it is necessary to elevate the light source.
The present invention enables the user to carry heavier batteries than would usually be fitted in a conventional hand held torch and also enables a light source to be carried in an elevated position. Diagrams I and 2 illustrate a specific embodiment of the present invention. The present invention comprises a battery pack (1) from which is mounted an extendable mast (2), The extendable mast supports a light source (3). The height of the light source is variable by adjustment of the extendable mast. The extendable mast may be adjusted whilst the user is wearing the invention. Diagram 1 shows the light source in a high position. Diagram 2 shows the light source in a lower position.
Shoulder straps (4) and waist straps (5) enable the invention to worn on the users back in the style of a rucksack, keeping the arms free and unladen.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims
    Claim 1 A portable electric light that is carried on a person's back and wholly supported by means other than the arms or head, with the light source positioned in a high elevation predominantly at the same height or above the users head on an adjustable, extendable mast, and with the battery positioned at or close to waist level.
    Claim 2 A portable electric light as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the means of adjusting the height of the light source is provided by a number of separate links pivotally connect together.
    Claim 3 A portable electric light as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the means of adjusting the height of the light source is provided a telescoping mast.
