A Back Lit Poster Display System For Displaying A Poster In A Window And A Method Of Displaying And Illuminating A Poster In A Window.
The present invention is concerned with a low cost compact back lit poster 5 display system for use in environments such as the windows of small shops.
Conventional back lit poster display systems are known in which a poster is deployed across a flat transparent panel or frame member. A light box containing an array of fluorescent tubes or other light sources is attached behind the poster to the frame member and a transparent cover is provided to cover the poster. The cover frame 10 member and light box may cooperate to provide a robust free standing structure which may be weather proof and/or tamper proof according to the intended location and application of the system. However, existing free standing systems are bulky and relatively expensive because they must be self supporting. The space required for the installation of such display systems and their cost renders them inappropriate in many 1 5 situations.
The present invention aims to alleviate at least some of the technical problems exhibited in the state of the art and accordingly there is provided: a back lit poster display system for displaying a poster in a window comprising: a light source having means to secure it against a first surface of a window pane 20 so that it is supported and reinforced, a poster frame having means to secure it to a second surface of a window pane opposite the first surface whereby a poster can be deployed across the frame for display, illuminated by the light source.
Further according to the present invention there is provided: 25 a method of displaying and back lighting a poster in a window comprising the steps of:
i r - 2 securing a light source to a first surface of a window pane so that the window pane supports and reinforces the light source, securing a poster frame to the opposite surface of the window pane, so that the window par,_ supports and reinforces the poster frame, 5 deploying a poster across the poster frame and illuminating the poster by means of the light source.
It is envisioned that the usual application of the display system and method will exploit an external shop window. The system then presents the significant advantages of having a shallow frame outside the shop on which is deployed the poster and thus the 10 demand for space inside an often crowded shop is reduced to that for the light source.
The light source will preferably be in the form of a box secured to the first, inside surface of the window pane by means of hook part and loop part fabric fastening tape. One part of the tape may be adhesively secured to a flange formed on the light box while the other part is adhesively secured to the window. Thus maintenance of the display system 15 is conveniently and inexpensively provided for by simply separating the box from the window to gain access to either the inside of the window pane or the light box.
Furthermore, the light box can be made relatively fragile because much of the structural strength required for the display is provided by the window.
The poster is displayed on the frame secured to an opposite external surface of 20 the window pane. It is preferably covered by a transparent cover which can be removed or opened to gain access to the poster for replacement or other purposes. The cover may be provide with a tamper proof lock. In the crowded premises where it is envisioned the display system will be deployed this makes access to frequently exchange the poster convenient because access to the exterior of the shop is relatively 25 unobstructed. The external part of the display, i.e., the frame and cover, can also, conveniently, be very shallow. As with the light source the external frame can be made relatively fragile because its strength is renforceo by the window pane in use
i A back lit display system and a method of displaying and backlighting a poster will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a window pane "P". A light source is provided by a light box 1 5 having means to secure it against a first inside surface of the window pane "P" so that it is supported and reinforced. A poster frame 2 has means provided by adhesive tape (not shown) to secure it to a second surface of the window pane opposite the first surface whereby a poster (not shown) can be deployed across the frame for display, illuminated by the light source. A cover 3 is provided to locate over the frame 2 in order 10 to weather proof the poster and prevent tampering. The cover includes a tamper proof lock 7 of generally conventional design.
The light box 1 provides support for two fluorescent lamp fittings and the associated fluorescent lamps 4.
To install the display system, the light box is provided with securing means 15 comprising two part hook and loop fabric fastening tape 5 which is adhesively fastened to a flange 6 formed around the rim of the light box 1. The exposed surface of the tape 5 is treated with an adhesive to secure it to the glass of the window pane by simply pressing the light box against the pane in the appropriate place. Subsequent access to the interior of the light box for maintenance is than achieved simply by pulling the box so 20 that the parts of the tape separate.
The poster frame 2 is similarly attached but by means of simple double sided adhesive tape applied to the window facing side of the frame members. The frame may be provided with fastening means such as sprung clips to ease the deployment of a poster. Once a poster is deployed across the frame, the cover 3, formed in the shape of 25 a tray with a transparent front panel is secured over the frame. Various generally conventional means such as interengaging ridges. or projections and sockets can be
!, - 4 used to secure the cover, while a conventional tamper proof lock 7 is used to prevent unauthorized access.
The window display system shown in figure 2 has a support member provided by a shelf 8 which can be secured to the window pant 'P" by securing means such as hook 5 and loop fabric tape or more permanently via double sided adhesive tape. A product can then be displayed on the support member immediately adjacent the window pane.
A poster frame 2 is secures to a second, opposite, surface of the window pane "P", in opposition to the support member. In this way a poster can be deployed across the window pane in close proximity to the object displayed. The poster can then 10 conveniently be selected to display details about the object. The poster will be provided with a transparent window through which the object may be viewed.
The support member 8 may be enclosed in a box 9 and may be integral with the box. The support member 8 and/or the enclosure 9 will preferably include a light source 10.
