A PUSHER AMUSEMENT MACHINE
This invention relates to a pusher amusement machine.
Pusher amusement machines are well known and they are to be found in many amusement arcades. The pusher amusement machines comprise a playfield and a pusher member for pushing coins or tokens over
the playfield towards an edge of the playfield. Coins or tokens falling over
the edge of the playfield are usually received in either a player collection tray
where they represent winnings for a player, or a machine collection box where they represent revenue for the amusement arcade.
In order to ensure that the coins or tokens do not fall too readily over the edge of the playfield, the known pusher amusement machines are often
such that the edge of the playfield is provided with an upwardly extending
portion. The coins or tokens have to pass up this upwardly extending portion before they are able to fall over the edge of the playfield. During
use, the coins or tokens tend to build up over the upwardly extending portion. Such a build up of coins or tokens is intended to look attractive and exciting with the aim of encouraging players to play the pusher amusement machine. In order to make the build up of the coins or tokens look as attractive and exciting as possible, it is known to provide the Hayfield with an upwardly
extending portion which comprises at least one shelf which extends above the playfield and which holds the coins or tokens along its length. Often
several of the first shelves are employed, with each shelf being spaced slightly forward of the shelf above it.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a pusher amusement machine which enables a coin or token display at the edge of the playfield to
look more attractive and exciting than hitherto, thereby providing more encouragement than hitherto for players to play the pusher amusement machines. Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a pusher amusement machine comprising a playfield and a
pusher member for pushing coins or tokens over the playfield towards an
edge of the playfield, the playfield being such that the edge comprises an
upwardly extending portion over which coins or tokens have to pass before being able to fall over the edge of the playfield, and the upwardly extending
portion being such that it comprises at least one first shelf which extends above the playfield and at least one second shelf which extends below the
playfield, the second shelf being spaced apart from the first shelf in a
vertical direction such that coins or tokens are able to be stacked on top of one another on the second shelf in order to give an impression that coins or tokens on the first shelf are stacked on top of coins or tokens on the second shelf. The upwardly extending portion acts as a functional control device for the playfield in ensuring that coins or tokens do not fall too readily over the
edge of the playfield. In addition, the upwardly extending portion is able to
provide a visual feature of a bank of coins present at the playfield edge,
thereby generating additional player appeal. The bank of coins is able to appear much greater in thickness than it really is, thereby giving the impression that there is a greater likelihood of a large number of coins falling over the edge of the playfield for the play of a single coin by a player.
Usually, the second shelf will be an upwardly extending shelf. If desired however the second shelf may be a horizontally extending shelf.
Preferably, the first shelf extends further out from the playfield than
the second shelf. If desired however the first and the second shelves may extend by the same distance, or the second shelf may extend further out from the playfield than the first shelf.
Preferably, the second shelf forms part of a formation having a back wall and a top wall, the top wall being such that it constitutes a part of the upwardly extending portion that is first engaged by coins or tokens.
Advantageously, the back wall is such that it supports the first shelf.
The first shelf may be spot welded to the back wall. Other means of fixing the first shelf to the back wall may be employed.
The back wall may be provided with elongate apertures for enabling the upwardly extending portion to be produced separately from the playfield
and then screwed to the playfield by fixing means, the elongate apertures
being such that they enable vertical adjustment of the upwardly extending portion relative to the playfield. The back wall may include at least one
circular locking aperture for locking the upwardly extending portion in position when the fixing means in the elongate apertures have been tightened. The circular locking aperture thus acts to provide extra security
against the fixing means in the elongate apertures becoming loose, and the upwardly extending portion slipping out of alignment with the playfield. The
fixing means will usually be screws but other types of fixing means may be employed if desired.
Preferably, the first shelf is such that its end nearest the playfield is
blocked with blocking means in order to ensure that coins or tokens lie in the front visible part of the shelf. The blocking means will usually be a strip of solid material. The blocking means may be fixed in position in the first shelf by any suitable and appropriate fixing means, for example spot welding.
The pusher amusement machine may be one in which the first shelf extends substantially along the entire length of the upwardly extending portion. Alternatively, if desired, the first shelf could extend only along part of the length of the upwardly extending portion, or two or more of the first shelves could be employed such that they are spaced apart from each other in a horizontal direction.
Preferably, there are two or more of the first shelves in a vertical direction, the first shelves then being positioned on top of each other and with each first shelf being positioned slightly forward of the first shelf above it. Usually, the second shelf will extend substantially along the entire length of the upwardly extending portion. If desired however the second shelf could extend only along part of the upwardly extending portion, or there could be two or more of the second shelves such that they are spaced apart from each other in a horizontal direction.
s The pusher amusement machine is preferably one in which there are two or more of the second shelves in a vertical direction, the second shelves being positioned on top of each other and with each second shelf being positioned slightly forward of the second shelf above it.
The upwardly extending portion may be made from any suitable and appropriate materials. Typically, the upwardly extending portion may be made from steel or stainless steel. The upwardly extending portion may be finished with a decorative and/or a protective plating.
Apart from the provision of the above mentioned upwardly extending portion, the pusher amusement machine may be constructed as known pusher amusement machines. Thus, for example, the pusher amusement machine may include a slot for receiving coins or tokens, and a shute which is for receiving coins or tokens placed in the slot and which is for directing the coins or tokens towards the pusher member and the playfield.
The pusher amusement machine may include a player collection tray for receiving coins or tokens, a machine collection box for receiving coins or tokens, and diverter means for diverting the coins or tokens falling off the playfield either to the player collection tray or to the machine collection box.
The diverter means may be a solenoid-operated diverter means. Coins or tokens in the player collection tray may form winnings for players. Coins or tokens in the machine collection box may form revenue that the pusher amusement machine earns.
The pusher means will usually slide backwards and forwards during operation of the pusher amusement machine. The pusher member may be a shelf member.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows part of a pusher amusement machine; Figure 2 is a side view of an upwardly extending portion of a playfield
in the pusher amusement machine shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the upwardly extending portion shown in Figure 2; and Figure 4 is a front view of the upwardly extending portion shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown part of a pusher amusement machine 2 comprising a playfield 4 and a pusher member 6.
During use of the pusher amusement machines 2, the pusher member 6 reciprocates for the purpose of pushing coins or tokens 8 over the playfield 4
towards an edge of the playfield defined by an upwardly extending portion
10. The upwardly extending portion 10 is such that coins or tokens 8 have to pass over it before being able to fall over the edge of the playfield 4.
The upwardly extending portion 10 comprises two first shelves 12, 14 which extend above the playtield 4. The upwardly extending portion 10 also comprises a second shelf 16 which extends below the playfield 4.
The second shelf 16 is spaced apart from the first shelf 14 in a vertical direction such that coins or tokens 8 are able to be stacked on top of
one another on the second shelf 16 in order to give an impression that coins or tokens 8 on the first shelves 12, 14 are stacked on top of coins or tokens 8 on the second shelf 16.
The second shelf 16 extends upwardly as shown. Also as shown, the first shelves 12, 14 extend further out from the playfield 4 than the second
shelf 16.
The second shelf 16 forms part of a formation having a back wall 18 and a top wall 20. The top wall 20 is such that it constitutes a part of the upwardly extending portion 10 that is first engaged by coins or tokens 8.
The back wall 18 is such that it supports the first shelves 12, 14. The first shelves 12, 14 are spot welded by spot welds 22 to the back wall 18.
The back wall 18 has elongate apertures 24 for enabling the upwardly extending portion 10 to be produced separately from the playfield
4 and then secured to the playfield 4 by fixing means such for example as
screws (not shown). The elongate apertures 24 are such that they enable vertical adjustment of the upwardly extending portion 10 relative to the playfield 4. The back wall 18 is also provided with a circular locking aperture
18 for locking the upwardly extending portion 10 in position when the fixing means in the elongate aperture 24 have been tightened. Depending upon the length of the upwardly extending portion 10, more than one of the circular locking apertures 26 may be employed. The or each circular locking aperture 26 helps to prevent any unwanted loosening of the fixing means in the elongate apertures 24.
As shown in Figure 2, the first shelf 12 is such that its end nearest the playfield 4 is blocked with blocking means 28. Similarly, the first shelf 14 is
such that its end nearest the playfield 4 is blocked with blocking means 30.
The blocking means 28, 30 act to ensure that coins or tokens 8 lie in the front visible part of the first shelves 12, 14. The blocking means 30 extends further outwardly than the blocking means 28 as best seen from Figure 2.
The blocking means 28, 30 are each a strip of solid material, usually a metal which may be spot welded or otherwise secured in position.
The first shelves 12, 14 may extend substantially the entire length of the upwardly extending portion 10. Alternatively, the first shelves 12, 14 may terminate short of the ends of the upwardly extending portion 10 as shown in Figures 1 and 3. As can best be seen from Figure 2, the first shelves 12, 14 are positioned vertically on top of each other, with the first shelf 14 being positioned slightly forward of the first shelf 12 above it.
The second shelf 16 also extends along the entire length of the upwardly extending portion 10 as shown in Figure 1, but it may terminate short of the ends of the upwardly extending portion 10 if desired. Only one second shelf 16 has been shown but more than one second shelf 16 could be employed if desired, with the second shelves 16 then being positioned vertically on top of each other in the same general manner as the first shelves 12, 14.
The upwardly extending portion 10 forms a functional control device ensuring that coins or tokens 8 do not fall too readily over the edge of the playfield 4. In addition, the upwardly extending portion 10 is able to create
the impression of a bank of coins or tokens 8 present on the playfield edge,
with the bank appearing to be much greater in thickness than it really is.
This in turn creates the impression of a greater likelihood of a large number of coins or tokens 8 falling over the edge of the playfield 4 for the play of a
single coin by a player of the pusher amusement machine 2.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the upwardly extending portion 10 could have only one first shelf 12 and more than one second shelf 16. Other methods of fixing the upwardly extending portion 10 than the elongate apertures 24 and the circular locking aperture 26 may be employed.
