Abstract
An information system networking a plurality of health and fitness facilities, including systems for use in each health and fitness facility comprising of a computerised network and a means of gathering data from a plurality of exercise machines. This data will be gathered using electronic devices which have the means of transmitting the electronic data between an exercise machine and a storage media. The information system will also have a means of transmitting advertising information to one or more control IT device(s) within health and fitness facilities. This advertising data is then transmitted to each interface/display device through the electronic device on each exercise machine. Alternatively, advertisements will be transmitted to PC's over the internet or through control IT devices to the PC's within each health and fitness facility.
Description
Computerised Information System Technical field:
This invention relates to a computerized network system for the use in health and fitness facilities, and more particularly, to a system for receiving and analysing data from exercise machines to provide information on individual facility member's fitness performance. The system can also be used to motivate and entertain the users as well as providing a targeted advertising media.
Background:
At present there is high competition between health and fitness facilities to attract and more importantly to retain members. There is a lot of evidence that there is a definite demand for a product or system which can increase the membership retention and attraction rate, and differentiate a health and fitness facility from its competitors, preferably using high tech modern equipment therefore providing a series of benefits for the facility.
At present the products available which address these issues use very basic technology and do not provide a complete solution.
Preferred Technical Features: In one aspect the system may be viewed as; A computerised information system networking a plurality of health and fitness facilities. Including systems for use in a health and fitness facility comprising of a computerised network and a means of gathering data from a plurality of exercise machines. One element of the information system is electronic devices which have the means of transmitting the electronic data between an exercise machine and a storage media.
The computerised information system will also have a means of transmitting advertising information to one or more health and fitness facilities.
On another aspect it could be viewed as; A computerized information system comprising of; A network of a plurality of health and fitness facilities, A computerized network and a means of gathering data from a plurality of exercise machines within each health and fitness facility, An electronic device which has the means of transmitting the electronic data between an exercise machine and a storage media, A means of transmitting advertising information to one or more health and fitness facilities.
Example:
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 illustrates an exercise system consisting of; an electronic device, an interface/display unit, and an exercise machine with built in electronics (eg. an exercise bike).
Figure 2 illustrates an exercise system consisting of; an electronic device, an interface/display unit, and an exercise machine without built in electronics (eg.
variable resistance machine).
Figure 3 illustrates the health and fitness facility information system.
Referring to the drawings the system comprises of; A network of a plurality of health and fitness facilities (Fig. 3), A computerized network and a means of gathering data from a plurality of exercise machines (which have (3) or do not have (5) built in electronics) within each health and fitness facility.
A plurality of exercise systems (Fig. 1 and 2), each one comprising of an interface/display device (1), and an electronic device (2) (they may be one and the same) which has the means of transmitting the electronic data from an exercise machine (3/5) to an IT device (eg. control server, 6). This control IT device' (6) is also connected to one or more PC's (7) within the health and fitness facility.
A 'central control IT device' (8) (e.g. central control server) which connects all the 'control IT devices' (6) to an advertising system (11) and a web IT device (9), which connects the system to the World Wide Web (10).
Note that in the case of an exercise machine without built in electronics (5) sensors (4) are connected to allow exercise data to be gathered.
The input of exercise data into the entire system can be done either through an exercise system using the interface/display device (e.g. colour touch screen) or through another device (e.g. a PC) via the 'control IT device'. The electronic device can then use this data or data stored on the 'control IT device' to program the exercise machine to the desired settings. When the exercise machine is in use, data is transmitted from the built in electronics or sensors to the electronic device. The electronic device then transmits the data to the 'control IT device' and/or the interface/display device. The interface/display device can then display current data and/or stored data from the 'control IT device'.
The interface/display device may or may not be free standing from the exercise machine and the holding mechanism used may or may not allow individual ergonomic positioning for each user.
Each user of the network has an ID code which can be entered into the system using the interface/display device or another device (e.g. PC, electronic key, electronic keycard). Using software packages the users can view current fitness data against stored data via an IT device (e.g. PC, PDA, laptop) or the interface/display device or even compete against previous perfommances or other gym users in an interactive game which can be displayed on the interface/display device or another other display device (e.g. large plasma screen).
Data and information of each user is stored on the 'control IT device'. This data and information can be retrieved from the intemet using the 'central control IT device' and a 'web IT device'. Targeted advertising information can also be transmitted to each interface/display device and/or other display device (e.g. PC monitor, large screen), and will be filtered using the user information on the control IT device'.
Health and fitness facility managers and staff can view data of their users using a PC connected to the 'control IT device'.
Since, a plurality of health and fitness facilities are connected using the 'central control IT device', data can be transmitted from any one facility to another. This allows data to be compared from different facilities or even virtual competitions to be conducted between facilities. That is one facility could compete against another in an interactive game.
The system also allows a host of other interactive software options which can be displayed on the interface/display devices or another display device (e.g PC's monitor). The system may or may not be connected to other devices (eg. electronic weighing scales, heart rate monitoring devices, laptops, PDA's).
Note the network does not have to be set up as referred to in this example. Other devices could be used to connected/link the preferred technical features together. Also note that, when referring to the word 'connected' throughout this document, it is meant either connected physically (eg.wired) or not physically (eg. wireless).
