Abstract
The folding speed bump, or sleeping policeman, is primarily for use near schools, colleges, airports and other places where the speed bump is only required for short periods at a time and comprises a number of segments 1 that with a flat surface and a curved surface and which are connected to a base 6 via hinges 9. In use, the base is secured in a road so that it presents an upwardly facing concave surface and the segments can move between a stored position, where they are located within the base so that their flat surfaces are flush with the road, and an in-use position where they are pivoted approximately 180 degrees to present an obstacle for a vehicle to drive over. The segments may be provided with reflectors 5 and locks 4 to secure them in the desired position.
Description
23952 1 6
A Sleeping Policeman This invention relates to a Folding Sleeping Policeman.
Usually the sleeping policemen are found near Schools, Colleges, and Universities, used only for a very short period during their intended design, especially near Kinder Garden and Primary Schools. And where many are build in populated areas.
Let's take a school for my explanation, and the time being used for the intended design of a Sleeping Policeman, to slow down the traffic near a Primary School, while children are going in and out ofthe School; Example; Sleeping Policemen build near this particular school are utilized from 08:00 to 08:45, that's when the children are going into the school (attending) and an other thirty minutes utilization for when the children are leaving school, exp; from 14:20 to 14:50.
So from a 24 hours in a day, only an hour and fifteen minutes are utilized, and if we remove the days when the school is closed, Saturdays, Sundays, Christmas and Easter holidays plus the Summer holidays, they will add up to about four months in a year of being closed, so if one adds up the forty five minutes plus the thirty minutes in each day, it will result in one hour fifteen minutes (75 minutes) X 5 Days, it will result in 6 hours 25 minutes every week, 6 hours 25 minutes a week X one month = 25 hours 40 minutes, = I day, I hour, and 40 minutes each month, If one removes the 4 months of school closure from each year due to holidays and week-ends, it will leave us with 8 months, so I day, I hour, and 40 minutes X 8 (months) = 8days, 13 hours, 33 minutes, from a total of 365 days in a year, Or in hours of usage, 205 hours, 33 minutes for the full function being utilized by the sleeping policemen, from the total of 8,760 hours each year, That's only 2 34 % of utilization.
My idea is of a Folding Sleeping Policemen, since in some areas mentioned in detail above regarding the time of utilization, the Folding Sleeping Policemen will eliminate the nuisance to the traffic drivers in general ofthe Sleeping Policemen, by simply being folded away when not in need oftheir original design, A specific embodiment ofthe invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Fig. 1. Shows the Folding Sleeping Policeman in perspective, when not in use, that is in the closed position, (Folded) Fig. 2. Shows the Folding Sleeping Policemen in perspective, being used, that is in the open position, (Unfolded).
Fig. 3 & 4. Shows the side elevation views, of both the open and closed positions, in a fitted pre-cast concrete mold made to house and hold the molded base.
t Referring to the drawings, the Folding Sleeping Policemen comprises of many Segmenb, 1, making up the desired number of segments pending the width of each road or each street having the Folding Sleeping Policemen being installed to that specific area. The Segments, 1, will be light in weight, compared to all segments being molded in one piece, thus the reason in this design of Segments, 1, is to help in the process of Folding and Unfolding ofthe Folding Sleeping Policemen.
Each segment, will be designed to have a Protruding-tongue, 2, overlapping onto each protruding-tongue of each segment, until the last segment will have its protruding-tongue as the locking tongue, with the Key, 7, The Locks, 3 & 4, are designed to lock the last ofthe over lapping of the Segments, 1, Protruding-tongues, 2, The Lock, 4, locks the over lapping Segmenb, 1, in the open position, (Unfolded), while Lock, 3, locks the over lapping the other way round ofthe same Segmenb, 1, in the closed position, (Folded).
Each Segment, 1, has embedded two Reflectors, 5, one on each side.
The Base, 6, would be bolted onto a Pre-cast Concrete Foundation, 8, and the Base, 6, would have a Recess, 10, to house each Protruding-tongue, 2.
Each Segment, 1, holds two Hinges, 9, The Key, 7, could be held by the school Head Master, Lollypop-man, Traffic Warden, or in the case ofthe Folding Sleeping Policemen being (owned) installed, in a private proper the Key, 7, will be in the owner's hands.
Claims (5)
- FOLDING SLEEPING POLICEMENI A Folding Sleeping Policemen, as the name bears, is a Sleeping Policemen That can be folded, (closed when its' use is not needed)
- 2 A Folding Sleeping Policemen, as claimed in claim, I, wherein it could be manufactured in segments to facilitate in the weight when folding or unfolding is needed.
- 3 A Folding Sleeping Policemen, as claimed in claims, I, & 2, wherein it could be manufactured together with its base to be bolted onto a pre-cast concrete foundation, in a pre-cut hole to fit the concrete base, in the road, or street.,
- 4 A Folding Sleeping Policemen, as claimed in claims, I, 2, & 3, wherein each segment is held down with each protruding-tongue, of each segment, and with the last protruding- tongue on the last segment for the locking ofthe whole folding segments, by a special key.
