Description

TITLE: COMPACT CART ASSEMBLY
The present invention relates to a cart assembly, more particularly to a compact cart assembly by the use of which a heavy article can be shifted from one 5 place to another place.
A conventional cart assembly is generally used in places like supermarkets and factories for transporting heavy goods from one place to another, and includes a rectangular support plate and four 10 casters mounted to a bottom of the support plate at four corners thereof. However, the conventional cart assemblyisinconvenientto store due ton's bulky size.
Moreover, the central portion of the support plate is susceptible to downward depression due to long term 15 use since the weight of goods generallyis concentrated on the central portion of the support plate.
The object of the present invention is to provide a cart assembly which includes at least one cart unit that has a compact size so as to facilitate storage, 20 that is of a particular construction such that a plurality of cart units can be coupled together to form a larger cart assembly, and that eliminates the disadvantages of the aforesaid prior art cart
assembly. 25 Accordingly, a cart assembly of the present invention includes at least one cart unit. The cart
unit includes a support plate and a plurality of casters. The support plate has opposite top and bottom faces, opposite first side faces, and opposite second side faces. The casters are mounted to the bottom face 5 of the support plate. Each of the first side faces is formed with a first dovetail wedge and a first dovetail groove which gradually diverges from the top face toward the bottom face. Each of the second side faces is formed with a second dovetail wedge that complements 10 the first dovetail groove, end a second dovetail groove which gradually diverges from the bottom face toward the top face. The first dovetail wedge of each of the first side faces has a structure that complements the second dovetail groove.
15 Other features and advantages of this invention will become more apparent in the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments of this
invention, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: 20 Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of a cart assembly according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view, illustrating how the preferred embodiment can be used for supporting 25 a flower pot; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the preferred
embodiment to illustrate configuration of a bottom thereof; Figure 4 is a top planar view of two cart units of the preferred embodiment; 5 Figure 5 is a fragmentary, perspective view of two cart units of the preferred embodiment, illustrating prior to lowering the upper cart unit toward the lower cart unit for connecting the same to form a small cart assembly; 10 Figure 6 is a sectional view, illustrating how two cart units of the preferred embodiment are connected together; Figure 7 is a perspective view, illustrating how four cart units of the preferred embodiment are 15 connected together to form a relatively large cart assembly; Figure 8 is a perspective, partly cutaway view of a modified preferred embodiment of a cart assembly according to the present invention, illustrating how 20 two support plates are coupled together to enhance rigidity and thickness of the cart assembly; Figure 9 is a perspective view of a relativelylarge cart assembly of the presentinvention, whichis formed by interconnecting sixteen cart units of Figure 8; and 25 Figure 10 is a perspective view of another modified preferred embodiment of a cart assembly according to the present invention, illustrating how three support
plates are coupled together to further enhance rigidity and thickness of the cart assembly.
Referring to Figure 1, the preferred embodiment of a cart assembly according to the present invention is 5 shown to include a cart unit which comprises a support plate 1 and four casters 3.
As illustrated, the support plate 1 has opposite top and bottom faces 101, 102, opposite first side faces 21, and opposite second side faces 22. The 10 casters 3 are mounted to the bottom face 102 of the support plate 1 at four corners thereof to facilitate movement of the same. Each of the first side faces 21 of the support plate 1 is formed with a plurality of first dovetail wedges 211 and a plurality of first 15 dovetail grooves 212, each ofwhichis disposed between an adjacent pair of the first dovetail wedges 21 and each of which gradually diverges from the top face 101 toward the bottom face 102 of the support plate 1. Each of the second side faces 22 of the support plate 1 is 20 formed with a plurality of second dovetail wedges 221 and a plurality of second dovetail grooves 222, each of which is disposed between an adjacent pair of the second dovetail wedges 221 and each of which gradually diverges from the bottom face 102 toward the top face 25 101 of the support plate 1. The second dovetail wedges 221 of each of the second side faces 22 are configured to complement the first dovetail grooves 212 in one
of the first side faces 21 of an adjacent cart unit.
The first dovetail wedges 211 of each of the first side faces 21 are configured to complement the second dovetail grooves 222 in one of the second side faces 5 22 of an adjacent cart unit. The support plate 1 is further formed with a central opening 23 for material savings. In addition, the cart unit can be used to transport a flower pot 4 by disposing the flower pot 4 in the central opening 23, as best shown in Figure 10 2. Alternatively, the cart unit itself can serve as a flower pot support for displaying in a sale outlet.
Referring to Figure 3, in order to enhance the rigidity of the cart unit of the present invention, the bottom face 102 of the support plate 1 is formed 15 with a plurality of interconnected reinforcing ribs 24. According to the present invention, two cart units can be assembled to form a cart assembly. During assembly, one of the first side faces 21 of the left 20 support plate lis brought to confront one of the second side faces 22 of the right support plate 1, as best shown in Figure 4. Then, the left support plate 1 is lifted upward away from the right support plate 1, as shown in Figure 5. After aligning the second dovetail 25 wedges 221 of the left support plate 1 with the first dovetail grooves 212 in the right support plate 1, the left support plate 1 is lowered toward the right
support plate 1 in such a manner that the second dovetail wedges 221 of the left support plate 1 extend respectively into the first dovetail grooves 212 in the right support plate 1, while the first dovetail 5 wedges 211 of the right support plate 1 extend respectively into the second dovetail groove 222 of theleft side plate 1, as best showninFigure6, thereby interconnecting and preventing disengagement between the left and right support plates 1 in a horizontal 10 axis. Under this condition, the top faces 101 of the left and right support plates 1 are flush with each other to receive a relatively large article thereon.
Figure 7 is a perspective view illustrating that four cart units of the preferred embodiment are 15 interconnected in the aforesaid manner to form a cart assembly. As such, when a heavy article is disposed on the cart assembly, the load can be evenly distributed over the support plates 1, thereby preventing concentration of load on a central portion 20 of the cart assembly.
Referring to Figure 8, a modified preferred embodiment of the cart assembly according to the present invention is shown to have a construction similar to the previous embodiment. The only 25 difference resides in that, in order to increase the thickness and rigidity of the cart assembly, the cart unit further includes an additional support plate 5
that is stacked on top of the support plate 1 of the cart unit and that is secured thereto by using four posts 6. Each of the posts 6 is crossshaped in cross-section, and extends into engaging holes 51, 25 5 in the support plates 1, 5. Preferably, each of the posts 6 has a cross section that gradually reduces toward a distal end thereof such that it firmly engage the peripheral walls confining the holes 51, 25 once inserted thereinto. Figure 9 is a perspective view of 10 a relatively large cart assembly which is formed by interconnecting sixteen cart units of Figure 8 in the manner described hereinbefore.
Referring to Figure 10, another modified preferred embodiment of the cart assembly according to the 15 present invention is shown to have a construction similar to that shown in Figure 8. The only difference resides in that, in order to further increase the thickness and rigidity of the cart assembly, an additional support plate 5 is stacked on top of the 20 upper support plate 5 of the cart unit shown in Figure 8 and is coupled thereto by using another four posts 6, which extend into holes 52 in the support plates 5. The support plates 1, 5 of the present invention 25 can be mass produced in a conventional manner. Since thesize of each of the support plates!, 5is relatively small, a plurality of the support plates 1, 5 can be
stacked one above another so as to facilitate storage of the same. Mounting of the casters 3 to the support plates 1 is simple.
