Abstract
A washing and sterilising device comprising a container adapted to receive items to be washed and sterilised and a fluid, a transducer adapted to vibrate the fluid and an Ultra Violet light emmitting means adapted to shed UV light on the contents of the container.
Description
Washing and sterilising device The present invention relates to a washing
and sterilising device, for use in particular, but not exclusively, to wash and sterilise baby bottles.
It is commonly desired to use a clean and sterile baby bottle each time an infant is fed. Infants can require feeding at irregular intervals, so baby bottles are repeatedly cleaned and sterilised for use. It is important to ensure that the bottles are cleaned thoroughly to prevent infection. This can be a time consuming and tiresome task.
The present invention is intended to overcome some of these problems.
According to the present invention a washing and sterilising device comprises a container adapted to receive items to be washed and sterilised and a fluid, a transducer adapted to vibrate the fluid, and an Ultra Violet light emitting means adapted to shed UV light on the contents of the container.
Preferably the transducer may be adapted to vibrate the fluid at a frequency adapted to cleanse the items in the container, in a manner similar to known "sonic" washing devices.
The UV light emitting means can be a UV lamp adapted to emit a short wave light adapted to exterminate bacteria.
In a preferred construction the container may be provided with a lid, and the UV lamp can be provided on the underside of the lid.
The transducer can be connected to the container in order to vibrate the container and the contents therein, or the transducer can be provided in the container in order to vibrate the contents therein.
-2 The container may be releasably connectable to a base. The base may be provided with power supply means, which can supply power to the transducer and the UV lamp.
in one construction the base is provided with an elongate stanchion, upon the top of which the lid is disposed in a hinged arrangement. With this configuration the container is placed on the base, and the lid is folded down onto the container to secure it thereto.
The container may be cylindrical with an open top, adapted to be closed by the lid. In one construction the container is provided with support means to support the items to be washed and sterilized. Preferably the support means is adapted to support one or more baby bottles.
Preferably the device may be provided with operating means, for example an operation button or buttons. In one construction a push button is provided on the upper surface of the lid, which is also provided with illumination means, for example am LED. When the button is depressed a wash program is begun, and the LED is illuminated. When the wash program is ended the LED turns off.
The container can also be provided with handles. The fluid may be water.
The invention can be performed in various ways, but one embodiment will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a cross sectional side view of a washing and sterilising device according to the present invention.
As shown in Figure 1 a washing and sterilising device 1 comprises a container 2, a transducer unit 3 and a UV lamp 4. The container 2 contains baby bottles 5, along with their tops 5a, to be washed, and water 6.
-3 The transducer unit 3 is housed in the base 7 of the container 2, and the vibrating cone 8 is exposed at the bottom of the container, where it is in contact with the water 6. The container is also provided with handles, (not shown).
The baby bottles 5,5a are disposed on a washing tray 9, which is provided with drain apertures 10, and a lifting handle 11.
The device 1 is also provided with a base unit 12, which comprises a base portion 13, a stanchion 14 and a lid 15, which is attached to the stanchion 14 by means of hinge 16.
The UV lamp 4 is contained in the underside 17 of the lid 15, and comprises a socket 18, a UV bulb 19 and a water resistant cover 20.
The base unit 12 is provided with power supply means in the form of a mains electricity cable 21. The power supplied by the cable 21 is used to power the transducer 3 and the UV lamp 4.
The transducer unit 3 is further provided with the male portion 22 of a power connection 23. The base portion 13 is provided with the female portion 24. When the container 2 is placed on the base 12, the male 22 and female 24 portions of the connection 23 combine to provide power to the transducer. The connection 23 also serves to locate the container squarely onto the base unit 12, and in the correct position for the lid 15 to fit onto the top of the container 2.
The device Is also provided with activation button 25 provided on the upper surface 26 of the lid 15. The button 25 is provided with an internal LED 27, which is housed beneath a transparent cover 28. When the activation button 25 is depressed the device begins a washing and sterilising cycle, and the LED 27 Is illuminated. When the washing and sterilising cycle is complete the LED 27 is
-4 switched off. The button 25 is connected to the power supply, the transducer 3 and the LED 4 by known wiring means.
In use the baby bottles 5, 5a are placed on to the tray 9, which is adapted to carry four bottles. The tray 9 is then placed inside the container 2, which is then filled with water 6, to a level above the top of the bottles 5. There must be no air left inside the bottles 5. The container 2 is then placed onto the base unit 12, and located correctly by means of the connection 23. The lid 15 is then folded down on top of the container 2 in order to close it. The device 1 is then activated, with the transducer 3 vibrating the water 6 in order to wash the bottles 5, and the UV lamp illuminating the bottles 5 to sterilise them.
It will be appreciated that any number of different washing operations can be provided by the device 1. For example the duration of the wash could be adjusted, or the intensity of the transducer effect or the UV lamp, to suit the condition of the bottles.
It will be further appreciated that the device can be adapted to wash and sterilise any item, and that the invention is not restricted to the washing of baby bottles. Thus a baby bottle washing and sterilising device is provided which can wash and sterilise a number of baby bottles in a short period of time.
