Abstract

A stand for a motorcycle which acts on the front wheel of the vehicle to support it in an upright position. The stand comprises a floor-standing frame 2L, 2R with an inclined ramp 1 at one end and a pair of uprights 3L, 3R attached to the frame. The motorcycle is pushed or driven up the ramp, raising the front of the vehicle and guiding the front suspension forks of the vehicle over the uprights of the stand. As the wheel crosses the end of the ramp, the front of the vehicle drops and the ends of the front forks engage brackets 4L, 4R attached to the uprights. Locating rods 6A, 6B limit movement of the motorcycle forward or backward when the vehicle is on the stand. The ramp may be pivotally attached (13, fig 2) to the frame and the uprights may be adjustable longitudinally 9 with respect to the frame and vertically 8. The stand may be fixed to the ground and may act as an attachment point for anti-theft devices and a lightweight covered frame to protect the motorcycle from the elements. The stand can operate on the rear wheel of some motorcycles.

Description

' 1 Title: Motorcycle Upright Stand Description
Fig. 3is an exploded view of all the parts as viewed from the right rear side of a basic version of the motorcycle front wheel stand, constructed in accordance with the preferred version of the invention. The invention is in two main parts, one is the base which is connected to the other, the fork retaining seat supporting structure. All material used in the model illustrated are made from aluminum with the exception of the nuts and bolts which are stainless steel, Any hard metal such as steel or aluminium or advanced composites could be used. The base is constructed with 2L and 2R forming the side members.
Supports 5 and 6a form the base for ramp 1 which starts at floor level and rises to 1 1/4" in this example at the top of 6A. 6A also forms the aft wheel locator. 6B forms the forward wheel locator. Therefore the area between supports 6A and 6B form the area called the wheel locator. 7 is a securing plate. All supports and the ramp are attached to side members 2L and 2R by either welding, bonding or mechanical means such as through bolting, in the case of the illustrated version the supports have been welded.
The fork seat supporting structure is formed by pylons 3L and OR which are attached at their base to 2L and 2R respectively, in the illustration they are bolted using bolts, washers and nuts 9,10 and 11. Fork retaining seats 4L and 4R are attached to 3L and 3R respectively by bolts, washers and nuts 8, 10 and 1 1. Illustration shows a version of the invention that is adjustable both in the location of the strut supports 3L and OR in relationship to side members 2L and 2R and also fork retaining seats 4L and 4Rin relation to the strut supports 3L and 3R. Adjustability in this case is allowed with the use of nuts bolts and washers in slots machined into the pylons 3L and OR and side members 2L and 2R.
Fig. 1 shows the finished stand from the same angle.
Fig.2 shows the invention with a motorcycle fully engaged using the optional pivotable ramp. The motorcycles right fork 15 is resting on fork retaining seat 4R Fig 4 shows the invention with an optional moveable ramp 12, which would replace the static ramp 1 shown in Figs 1 and 3. The moveable ramp acts as a seesaw when it is pivoted 13 on rear wheel locator 6A. The ramp is designed with a longer length on the side where the wheel first engages into the ramp causing a less steep incline before the wheel drops as it passes over the ramp locator bracket 14 on 6A onto the shorter side of the ramp causing a steep drop into the wheel locator. When a motorcycle's front wheel is fully engaged in the invention the short end of the ramp acts as the rear locator.
Operation In operation a motorcycle enters the invention at its rear by driving or pushing the front wheel onto the lower edge of ramp 1 and then upwards to the other end of the ramp where the wheel passes over aft wheel locator 6A. The front wheel has been raised approximately 1" from ground level at this point and is now lowered into the area called the wheel locator. The wheels' forward travel is halted at forward wheel locator 6B causing the wheel to be trapped between wheel locators 6A and 6B, it cannot be moved either forward or backwards without deliberate effort. While the wheel is descending into the wheel locator the bottom of the motorcycles respective front forks are engaging onto left 4L and right 4R fork retaining seats. As both retaining seats are the same height from the ground as the bottom of their respective front forks the motorcycle is now locked in a fully upright position, it cannot without deliberate effort be moved in any direction. To remove the motorcycle from the stand the rider pulls upward and rearwards at the same time which lifts the front wheel out of the wheel locator back onto the ramp where it is lowered bade down to ground level and out of the stand. Securing plate 7 is designed to allow the stand to be bolted to the floor and also as an anti theft deterrent attachment point.

Claims (5)

  1. rat ClAIMS 1. A motorcycle stand comprising a ramp to raise the front
wheel of a motorcycle off the ground and direct the motorcycles front suspension forks over two pillars, one on each side of the ramp, which will support each of the front forks of the motorcycle when the wheel is lowered to the ground after the motorcycles front wheel has reached the high end of the ramp, the wheel is stopped from traveling further forward when the motorcycle forks are in position over the pillars by a bar at the front of the stand, the fork supporting pillars are adjustable for height.
  2. 2. A stand as claimed in Claim 1 has mounting point(s) so that the stand can be
securely fitted to the ground, attachment points for chains and other security devices may be attached to the above motorcycle stand.
  3. 3. A stand as claimed in Claims 1 and 2 has attachment points for a cover to protect a motorcycle from the elements.
  4. 4. A stand as claimed in any proceeding claim which is made from metal, plastics material or wood.
  5. 5. A motorcycle stand substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
