Abstract

Each earpiece 1 of a pair of headphones has multiple loudspeaker units 2,3,4,5 capable of providing front, rear, central and subwoofer channels of a surround sound system.

SURROUND SOUND HEADPHONES
This invention relates to Surround Sound Headphnoes Headphones as presently known are manufactured with only two loudspeaker units, one for each earpiece. One loudspeaker unit reproduces sound for the left earpiece and one loudspeaker unit reproduces sound for the right earpiece. This,by definition, restricts the sound effect reproduced to "stereo".
Currently available surround sound acoustic systems deliver sound output signals to several loudspeaker units ( or channels) commonly identified by the channel names "Left Forward", "Left Rear", "Right Forward", "Right Rear", "Central" and "Sub-Woofer".
For example a "5:1" surround sound system uses 5 "satellite" loudspeaker units and 1 "Sub-Woofer" unit.
The effect of surround sound is immediately lost once standard headphones are used, since "stereo" effect is then the maximum effect available.
According to the present invention there is provided loud-
speaker units sufficient to reproduce all aspects of a surr-
ound sound system. The Surround Sound Headphones embody more than one loudspeaker unit into each earpiece.
Surround Sound Headphones can be provided such that they provide any combination of the above mentioned aspects. That is to say, as an example, surround sound headphones could be used to provide only the "Left" and "Right" aspects ( and omit the "Central" and "Sub-Woofer" aspects). The combinations are numerous, based upon the aspects mentioned above.
For full surround sound effect all aspects should be reprod-
uced, which would mean providing 4 loudspeaker units per earpiece. To reproduce all aspects of a surround sound system whilst keeping the number of loudspeaker units to a minimum, 3 loudspeaker units per earpiece could be employed - where only one loudspeaker unit is used to relay the "Sub-Woofer" channel and one loudspeaker unit is used to relay the "Central" channel.
The "Central" and "Sub-Woofer" channels would each only be present in one earpiece using this method.
The loudspeakers would be arranged within the Surround Sound Headphones so as to give the maximum effect possible.
Figure 1 Shows an example layout of loudspeaker units within the Left earpiece.
Figure 2 Shows an example layout of loudspeaker units within the Right earpiece.

Claims (13)

-2 CLAIMS
1 Surround Sound Headphones comprising two earpieces, one for the left ear and one for the right ear, which embody more than one loudspeaker unit per earpiece in order to reproduce the left, right, central and Sub- Woofer aspects of surround sound acoustic systems.
2 Surround Sound Headphones as claimed in Claim 1 which
utilise more than one loudspeaker unit per earpiece.
3 Surround Sound Headphones as claimed in Claim 1 which utilise a loudspeaker unit in an earpiece for the purpose of reproducing sound signals from a surround sound acoustic system designated as the "Left Forward" channel.
4 Surround Sound Headphones as claimed in Claim 1 which utilise a loudpseaker unit in an earpiece for the purpose of reproducing sound signals from a surround sound acoustic system designated as the "Left Rear" channel.
5 Surround Sound Headphones as claimed in Claim 1 which utilise a loudspeaker unit in an earpiece for the purpose of reproducing sound signals from a surround sound acoustic system designated as the "Right Forward" channel.
6 Surround Sound Headphones as claimed in Claim 1 which utilise a loudpseaker unit in an earpiece for the purpose of reproducing sound signals from a surround sound acoustic system designated as the "Right Rear" channel.
7 Surround Sound Headphones as claimed in Claim 1 which utilise a loudpseaker unit in an earpiece for the purpose of reproducing sound signals from a surround sound acoustic system designated as the "Central" channel.
8 Surround Sound Headphones as claimed in Claim 1 which utilise a loudpseaker unit in an earpiece for the purpose of reproducing sound signals from a surround sound acoustic system designated as the "SubWoofer" channel.
9 Surround Sound Headphones which utilise more than two loudspeaker units in total, when combining the number of loudspeaker units for both left and right earpieces.

10 Surround Sound Headphones which are intended to be used with surround sound acoustic systems having at least one "Sub-Woofer".
11 Surround Sound Headphones which are intended to be used with surround sound acoustic systems having at least one "satellite" loudspeaker unit.
12 Surround Sound Headphones which are intended to be connected to and used with a "5.1" surround sound acoustic system, where 1 refers to the number of "Sub-Woofers" and 5 refers to the number of "satellite" speakers.
13 Surround Sound Headphones as substantially described herein with reference to figures 1-2 of the accompanying drawing.
