Abstract
A combined banknote and coin validator for determining the validity of a coin or banknote being presented thereto. The validator comprises: a coin sensing means for sensing physical parameters of a coin to determine its validity; a banknote sensing means for sensing the physical characteristics of a banknote to determine its validity; and a microprocessor operatively coupled to both the coin sensing means and the banknote sensing means. The microprocessor processes inputs from either sensing means to determine the validity of the coin or banknote being presented to the validator.
Description
Improvements Relating To Money Validation The present invention concerns
improvements relating to money validation and more particularly, though not exclusively, to an improved note and coin validator requiring lower maintenance and having a low-power consumption and a lower cost than a conventional combination of a note validator and a coin validator.
Independent banknote validators are known which can be used to verify the validity of paper/plastic banknotes. Such validators are commonly provided in the same money 10 accepting machine as a separate metal coin validators and acceptors. Clearly, the benefit of providing both types of validator in the same machine is that a range of notes and coins can be used by a user to effect a payment. However, the mechanisms for validating these different types of money have been historically always been distinctly separate objects.
The Present Invention: The present invention resides in the apparent simple appreciation that hugely significant benefits can be obtained in such combined banknote and coin validator machines by using the same microprocessor that controls a banknote validator, to 20 control and monitor coin validation sensors of various types. If the sensing of both banknotes and coins is controlled by one microprocessor it is also possible to common the power supply system and/or the interfaces to the host machine leading to significant savings in costs, power consumption and maintenance requirements.
Furthermore, programming acceptance thresholds and profiles of new coins and 25 banknotes becomes far easier as only a single update operation needs to be carried out rather than two separate ones.
In one exemplary embodiment, the combined coin and banknote validator module is constructed so that the validation of both types of money is carried out in one physical 30 unit. However, in an alternative embodiment, the coin sensing head is mounted in a different location within the same host machine. In this case, a coin sensing head of the combined validator is connected to the banknote validator processor by an interface cable to communicate the coin sensing activities. The connection may also
be realised by any other suitable means such as a fibre optic connection or a radio link for example.
In a further embodiment, the combined banknote and coin validator provided in a host 5 machine comprises a separate coin validator that can control the sensing and control systems of a banknote validation module. This produces a system very similar to the above but with the control resting with the processor of the coin controller rather than the banknote validator.
10 The different control of the banknote and coin sensors is then simply a matter of programming the microprocessor to carry out both the functions of banknote validation as well as coin validation. This is, in this embodiment, effected by having a software program in two separate parts one pertaining to the banknote validation functions and the other to the coin validation functions. The appropriate functions are 15 implemented depending on the inputs the microprocessor receives from the valiator sensors. The present invention can also extend to the use of the common microprocessor to validate other forms of payment such as those effected by a smart card or a memory 20 card. Features of the invention: 1) The use of a common microprocessor and memory structure to control, sense, calibrate, and interface the validation of coins and banknotes.
25 2) The provision of a common power supply to the coin and banknote validation functions. 3) The validation of notes and coins in the same physical unit 4) The validation of notes, coins and smart card/memory cards in the same physical unit 30 5) The validation of notes and coins where the coin sensing and control is a separate but connected module 6) The validation of notes and coins where the note sensing and control is a separate but connected module
