Abstract

The bacterial filter holder comprises a base plate 1 with an adhesive backing pad 3 for attachment to the patients skin, and four claws 2 for holding the filter 4. The filter is attached to the patients body preventing disconnection of an epidural or spinal catheter from the filter. May prevent premature termination of pain relief.

Description

A device to aid the prevention of disconnection of an epic or spinet
coveter Tom a bacberiad filter Description
Background
This invention relates to the use of epidural or spinal catheters and bacterial filters used in pain relieving techniques. Epidural and spinal catheters are used to deliver drugs to the extradum1 or intrathecal spaces in the spinal column.
They are routinely used as a method of pain relief following major surgery, during delivery of the newborn child, and to assist pain relief in the field of palliative care.
The catheter system consists of a needle for insertion of the catheter, the catheter itself and a bacterial filter to prevent infection spreading into the epidural or intrathecal space.
The catheter is attached to the filter via a manually tightened 'chuck' which grips the catheter and- which is itself attached to the filter with a Luer connection Management protocols slictate that if the catheter becomes disconnected from the filter, to minimise the risk of infection, the catheter should be removed.
This may occur at any stage during the life of the catheter, and if occurnog early on may lead to premature removal of the catheter with a potentially deleterious effect for the patient. Studies have suggested that premature removal of the catheter may occur in up to 20% of patients who have had these catheters inserted.
This device is designed to minimise the risk of disconnection of the catheter from the antibacterial filter and chuck
Essential features.
The essential feature of this device is its ability to fix the scubas al filter to the patient's body, Bus preventing the filter putting tension on the catheter and chuck which can lead to the disconnection of the catheter from the chuck and filter. This is achieved by the use of a self- adhesive disc into which the filter clips, which is then stuck to the appropriate part of the patient's anatomy.
An added advantage gained by the filter being secured to the patient and the disconnection risk reduced, is that both the nursing staff and particularly the patient are reassured, and the patient can become more mobile, an essential feature in preventing complications in early postoperative period. Claim 1. A device which consists of a base plate, with an adhesive backing pad and 4 claws, which grip a bacterial filter allowing the filter to be attached to a patient body thereby preventing disconnection of an epidural or spinal catheter from the filter.
2. By preventing accidental disconnection ofthe catheter from the filter, premature removal and termination of Me pain relieving technique can be avoided.

Claims (3)

Amended claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS
1. A device for reducing the risk of the accidental disconnection of a catheter from an associated anti-bacterial filter comprising a base plate having an adhesive layer formed on one surface and a plurality of clips projecting from an opposite surface the clips being adapted to encompass and retain a bacterial filter forming part of a catheter assembly.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein there are four claws regularly disposed around the periphery of a circular disk.
3. A device for reducing the risk of the accidental disconnection of an anti-bacterial filter from an associated catheter assembly substantially as hereinbefore described and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
