Abstract
A device cable of lowering persons from tall buildings at a constant velocity, the device shown [fig 1]. Coils of strapping [13] or other suitable material with sufficient length for the drop required are wound onto drums [10] these may be firmly attached to fitments inside rooms or externally on buildings. A person wearing a harness may be attached to the rail [4] and when load is applied to the rail by fact of the persons weight lowering the coils unwind, rotation of the shaft [5] causes two pistons [9] to move apart and together continuously. The pistons are contained in cylinder barrels, which may be filled with oil or any viscous liquid, the liquid is forced from the front area of the pistons to the back and vice versa. The liquid passes through venturis in the pistons which controls speed of descent.

( 1 CONSTANT VELOCITY CABLE LOWERING DEVICE
The invention relates to the easy and safe exit from high buildings in the event of normal exit routes being unavailable, it may also be used to allow escape from heights where speed of escape is essential such as helicopters, oil rigs, ships and inhospitable terrain for mountain rescue.
The difficulty of escape from high buildings where escape systems may include rigid ladders, coiling metal ladders, rope, rope abseil, or rope and pulley. Most of these systems may be suitable for able bodied persons under normal conditions but in times of emergency the less able or mobile can easily be evacuated when attached to lowering device. The device may be secured within a room and the cable attached to harness worn by the person to be lowered or the device may be attached to the person and the cable firmly fixed within the room.
The object of this device is to allow a person to be lowered at a constant velocity from a height which may be beyond the reach of other available escape systems or no escape systems exist, to reach ground level.
A coil of polyester strapping is coil wound onto a drum or drums, length of I strapping may vary from 40m up to 1 50m, the drum or drums will rotate at a constant speed when a load or a person is attached to the device. The speed of rotation is controlled by two pistons moving apart from each other damped by a medium such as oil or anti freeze passing from the front of each piston to the back through a venturi [16] in each piston this process reverses as the pistons change direction.
The device will be manufactured in a combination of steel, aluminium and moulded acetal resin Figure 1 shows a part sectioned elevation of the complete device Figure 2 shows the end view with the attachment component fixed to the strapping As shown in Fig 2 the attachment component[13] is attached to the strapping [8] which is wound onto the rotating drum [10]. The drum is connected to the central shaft [5], attached either side are two sleeves [2] which have endless helical grooves one left hand and one right hand machined into them. The moving pistons[11] slide freely over the sleeves [2] and are prevented from rotating by a restraining ball and slot.
The entire assembly is encased by a barrel [1] with a fine bore finish, the end cap [14] is assembled and pinned to prevent unauthorized tampering.
A medium is injected into the chambers [9] and sealed, the drive ball assembly [6] is fitted so that the ball will travel freely in the helical grooves

The strapping [8] runs over a jockey pulley [15] mounted centrally on the connecting shaft [7] When the attachment component [13] is firmly attached to a fixed item within the room and load is applied to the rail [4] the drum rotates and the pistons [11] travel apart through the medium. The medium is forced through the ventures [16] in the piston to fill the space vacated by the pistons. When the pistons complete their travel outward they are driven inwards by the helical groove and the medium passes to the front of each piston. This process is continuous whilst a load is applied to the rail [4].
