Abstract

A bilingual vocabulary book lists only those words which, in the two languages, have similarities either in their spelling or their phonetics. The words are preferably arranged in different ways such as alphabetical order, grammatical rules, themes, mnemonics, extended vocabulary, roots, etc. For each word a number of columns may exist relating to spelling, pronunciation, meaning, related words and opposite words. The book may be in paper, audio, video, electronic, digital or WAP form.

I ELILINGUALVOCABIJLARY BOOK
This invention relates to a bilingual vocabulary book of the type that lists words in a source language and their translated equivalents in the appropriate target language and where the words in both languages are arranged by thematic categories.
Such books are well known in the educational field and are generally used by language
students in order to learn vocabulary in a foreign language. Some bilingual dictionaries, most travel guides, language teaching books and school textbooks often include a glossary of useful words in two languages arranged by thematic categories. Bilingual vocabulary lists are also published in audio format in the form of cassettes and CDs, in electronic format in the form of floppy disks or CI)-R(-)Ms or on translation sites on the internet.
However, all these sources of reference suffer from the disadvantage that when learning vocabulary in a foreign language, it is difficult to expand one's vocabulary without spending a substantial amount of time memorising lists of words.
U.S. Intent N 5,934,708 discloses a doctionar of an alphabetic foreign language which makes it possible to reduce the time necessary to memorise the spelling, pronunciation and translation of foreign words by listing foreign words grouped according to similarities in the sequences of letters within the words. However, memorization still involves investing some time and the learning is based on the memorising of groups of foreign words according to their spelling rather than of families of words belonging to a specific theme.
Ids. Patent N 5,167,5()4 discloses a bilingual dictionary which facilitates a students recognition and appreciation of the number of words in a second language which the student already knows without additional study by using a distinctive painting method to distinguish cognates! which are the words identical or essentially identical in meaning in each language and identical or similar in spelling in each language' from the other words and indicia in the dictionary. lIowever, it does not thematically group the cognates for the purpose of swift and systematic learning, nor does it explain the grammatical rules governing the similarities between the cognates in the two languages.
Furthermore, in the case of both poor inventions, bilingual dictionaries are bulky and heavy items which makes them impractical to carry around whilst travelling or visiting a foreign coquetry. An object of this invention is to provide an information carrier in the form of a concise bilingual vocabulary book that allows quick and easy memorization of a large number of words in a foreign language, whilst providing the user with a method to expand their vocabulary in the foreign language through a logical deductive process, the invention, being slim and light enough to fit into a small bag or a pocket, doubling up as an easy to use and carry source of reference.
- 2 Accordingly, this invention provides a concise bilingual vocabulary book comprising: an information carrier that solely lists the words that any two etymologically related languages in the world have in common, the words in the source language and their translated equivalents in the target language, deriving from the same ancestral language and therefore the spelling of the said words being. in both languages, and regardless of their meaning' either identical or grammatically similar, wherein the words have identical sequences of letters which make up at least one third of the word, or being phonetically identical or having phonetic similarities, wherein the words have identical sequences of sound which make up at least one third of the word; wherein the said words are arranged in the book in three sections to organise the user's learning in a logical manner and expand their vocabulary. each section representing categories that may be called "Alphabetical C)rder", in which the words are listed in alphabetical order.
"Grammatical Rules". in which grammatical rules establish the etymological formation of the words and the words obeying these rules are listed under the relevant rule, and "Themes'?! in which the words belonging to the themes animals, arts, business. colours. education.
employment, entertainment. food and drink, geography, greetings, health, home, institutions, numbers, science, social issues, sports, technology! traditions! transport! travel, adverbs, adjectives and verbs are arranged under the relevant theme: wherein the said words are listed on the page! arranged in columns! each Cohen listing respectively the words in the source language, their translated equivalents in the target language, the pronunciation of the translated equivalents in the target language, the meaning of the translated equivalents in the target language, additional words in both the source and the target languages which are grammatically or phonetically similar and which are nmaticallv or phonetically related to the translated equivalents in the target language and the original words in the source language, and words in both the source and the target languages which are identical or grammatically or phonetically similar and whose meaning is the opposite of both the translated equivalents in the target language and the original words in the source language.
The invention may include an additional section that may be called "mnemonics", which lists: the words the source language; their translated equivalents in the target language; a mnemonic in the source language to help memorise the translated equivalents in the target language.
For example! the translated equivalent for the English word "cat" is "chat" in French! and the mnemonic " I have a coat with my cat' associates the word "chat" with "cat" in the same sentence. The invention may include an additional section that may be called "Extended Vocabulary and Roots"! which lists: the words in the source language which are not included in the four aforesaid sections because they have no grammatical or phonetic similarities with their translated equivalents in the target language but which are related in meaning to a family of words in the source language that derive from the same root word as the translated equivalents in the target language and that are common to the two languages;
l - 3 the translated equivalents in the target language which have no Prammatical or phonetic similarities with the words in the source language but which are related in meaning to a family of words in the target language which derive from the same root word as the translated equivalents in the target language and which are common to the two languages; the root word in the ancestral language from which the translated equivalents and the family of words in both the source and the target languages are derived; the family of words in both the source and the target languages which derive from the same root word as the translated equivalents in the target language and which are grammatically and phonetically similar.
For example the translated equivalent for the English word "life" is "vie" in French, these two words have no grammatical similarities because they are derived from different ancestral languages' respectively Germanic and Latin, however the English word 'life" is related in meaning to a family of words which, like the French word "vie", are derived from the Latin root "vita" and which are similar in spelling to a family of French words also derived from "vita?': the French translated equivalents for the English words "vital", "vitality" and vitamin" are "vital", "vitalite" and "vitamins". In this specific example, the columns on the page list "life" in the source language, being English, "vie" in the target language, being French, ' vita [atZN", "vital, vitality, vitamin" and "vital, vitalite, vitamine".
The invention may be produced in the reduced form of a bilingual dictionary, by including, only the section that may be called "Alphabetical Order".
The invention may be adapted to suit users of various age groups, learning abilities or learning interest, by including pictures to illustrate the words in the source language and the translated equivalents in the target language and by listing a reduced vocabulary which can be specifically adapted to children or by listing only the words which relate to a specific field of
expertise or to a specific profession.
Parts or all of the contents of the aforesaid invention may be included in bilingual dictionaries.
travel guides, language teaching books and school textbooks, brochures, handbooks, diaries, calendars or on translation sites on the internet.
Preferably, the invention is produced in the form of a book printed on paper with a hard cover or a paperback but it may instead be produced in audio, video, electronic, digital or WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) formats or in a combination of these media.
The contents of the aforesaid invention may be produced in the form of a computer or video game in which pressing a button makes the translated equivalents in the target language appear on a screen next to the words in the source language or next to pictures illustrating those words and in which a recorded voice pronounces the words appearing on the screen in the appropriate accent and intonation.
I'he contents of the aforesaid invention may be adapted to be used as a language teaching method to teach vocabulary in a foreign language.
- 4 A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying draftings in which: FIGURE 1 shows a front view of the page layout of the invention, opened on a page of vocabulary, in the section that may be called "Alphabetical Order^'; I;I(11 RF. 2 shows a front view of the page layout of the invention, opened on a page of vocabulary in the section that may be called 'Grammatical Rules"; FIGURE 3 shows a front view of the page layout of the invention, opened on a page of vocabulary, in the section that may be called 'Themes"; Figure 1, Figure 2 and Figure 3 include five words in a chosen source language, English, and their translated equivalents in a target language, French, to illustrate a concrete embodiment of the invention. These languages and these words are used for the sole purpose of explanation and do not constitute the entire and sole content of the invention. Figure 1, Figure 2 and Figure 3 are sample pages and therefore omit to show page numbers and complete word listings and are not in scale.
The pages of the invention list solely the words that anv two etmologicallv related languages in the world have in common, the spelling of the words in the source language and their translated equivalents in the target language, regardless of their meaning, being either identical or grammatically similar, wherein the words have identical sequences of letters which male up at least one third of the word, or the words being phonetically identical or having phonetic similarities wherein the words have identical sequences of sound which make up at least one third of the word.
The words in the source language and their translated equivalents in the target language are arranged in the book in three sections that may be called "Alphabetical C)rder" (Figure 11' Grammatical Rules" (Figure Id, and 'Themes" (Figure 3).
The first section may be called "alphabetical C)rder" (Figure 1). This section lists all the w ords the two languages have in common (9. 10), as specified in the above criteria, grouped in alphabetical order under subheadings (1) each indicating a letter of the alphabet. Each group of words arranged under the relevant alphabetic subheading is separated from another by a blank space.
The second section inay be called 'grammatical Rules" (Figure If. This section lists the words whose etymological formation obeys a grammatical rule that is common to both languages. Grammatical rules determine the characteristics of prefixes and suffixes and variations in spelling according to the languages. Explanations of the grammatical rules appear in alphabetical order as subheadings (2), and the words obeying each grammatical rule are grouped in alphabetical order under the respective grammatical rule subheading (9. 10).

I'he third section may be called "themes" (Figure 3). 'Ibis section lists the words which are relet ant to the themes animals, arts, business, colossus, education, employment. entertainment, food and drink. geography. greetings, health, home. institutions, numbers, science, social issues, sports' technology, traditions, transport, travel, adverbs. adjectives and verbs. These themes appear as subheadings, written in both the source and the target languages in alphabetical order (3) and the words relevant to each theme are grouped in alphabetical order under the respective theme subheading (9, I0). Each group of words arranged under the relevant theme subheading is separated from another by a blank space.
Within each section (Figure l, Figure ? and Figure 3), the title of the section is painted on the
top of each page (a).
Each section has four columns 15, 6, 7, 8) on each page.
The title of the sections and of the columns is written in the source language.
The first column which may bear the name of the source language 1). lists the relevant words in the source language (9) and refers to the second (6) and fourth (a) columns on its right.
Each word in the source language is followed by a sign in italics typeface indicating its grammatical nature, "n" being for "noun", "a" for "adjective", "v" for "verb" and "adv." for "adverb", and if applicable to the source language, by a sign in italics typeface indicating its gender, 'm" being for 'masculine", "f' f or "feminine" and "nt" for "neutral?'. In the sections that may be called "Alphabetical C)rder' and 'Themes", the sequences of letters which are identical within the translated equivalents in the target language and the words in the source language are indicated in bold typeface.
The second column, which may bear the name of the target language (6). indicates either that the spelling of the translated equivalent in the target language (l0) is identical or quotes either the grammatically similar spelling, the homonym or the phonetic analogue of that word (l0) and refers to the third column on its right 17). If the grammatical nature of the translated equivalents in the target language or their gender, if gender is applicable in the target language, are different frown that of the words in the source language. this is indicated in italics typeface by one of the signs mentioned above, after the spelling of the translated equivalents in the target language. In the sections that mav be called "Alphabetical Order" and 'Y'hemes", the sequences of letters which are identical within the translated equivalents in the target language and the words in the source language are indicated in bold typeface.
The third column. which may be entitled "Pronunciation" (7), indicates the pronunciation of the translated equivalents in the target language in signs in the International Phonetic Alphabet 111)
- 6 The fourth column to the right of the third column. which may be entitled "Meaning' (8), indicates either that the translated equivalents in the target language have an identical meaning to the words in the source language or quotes the meaning of those words ( 12).
The pages of the section that may be called Nonalphabetical ()rder" (Figure l), include a fifth column that may be entitled "Related Words.' and a sixth column that may be entitled Opposite Words".
I'he fifth column 113). positioned to the light of the fourth column (X). lists the words in both the source and the target languages which are grammatically or phonetically similar and which are grammatically or phonetically related to the translated equivalents in the target language and the original words in the source language (15). Each said word in the source language is followed by one of the signs mentioned above in italics typeface to indicate its grammatical nature and gender, if gender is applicable in the source language. If the grammatical Cadre of the words in the target language or their gender if gender is applicable in the target language, are different from that of the words in the source language, this is indicated in italics typeface by one of the signs mentioned above after the spelling of words in the target language.
The sixth column (14). positioned to the light of the fifth columns (13), lists the words (16) in both the source and the target languages which are identical or grammatically or phonetically similar and whose meaning is the opposite of both the translated equivalents in the target language (10) and the original words in the source language (9). Each said word in the source language (16) is followed by one of the signs mentioned above in italics typeface to indicate its grammatical nature and gender, if gender is applicable in the source language. If the grammatical nature of the said words in the target language or their gender, if gender is applicable in the target language, are different from those of the said words in the source language, this is indicated in italics typeface bv one of the signs mentioned above, after the spelling of the words in the target language.
If the translated equivalents listed in the second column (lO) do not have a corresponding word in the ' Related Words" (13) or ' Opposite Wordst' 114) column, the space is left blank.
In all sections, the titles of the columns appear once at the top of each page IS, 6, 7' 8, 13, 14)' under the title of the section (4).
Additional layout titles may appear on the side of each page for ease of use.
The aforesaid invention contains a preface written in the source language which explains how to use the sections and what the columns and signs refer to. The preface pages also contain an explanation of the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Claims (16)

2 An information carrier as claimed in Claim 1 that may include a section that may be called "Mnemonics" listing the words in the source language, their translated equivalents in the target language and a mnemonic in the source language to help the user memorise the translated equivalents in the target language.
3 An information carrier as claimed in Claim 1 that may include a section that may be called "Extended Vocabulary and Roots", listing: the words in the source language which are not included in the three sections described in Claim 1, nor in the fourth section described in Claim 2, because they have no grammatical or phonetic similarities with their translated equivalents in the target language, but which are related in meaning to a family of words in the source language that derive from the same root word as the
t translated equivalents in the target language and that are common to the two languages, the translated equivalents in the target language which have no grammatical or phonetic similarities with the words in the source language, but which are related in meaning to a family of words in the target language that derive from the same root word as the translated equivalents in the target language and which are common to the two languages, the root word in the ancestral language from which the translated equivalents and the family of words in both the source and the target languages are derived, the family of words in both the source and the target languages which derive from the same root word as the translated equivalents in the target language and which are grammatically and phonetically similar.

13 An information carrier as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3 or Claim 4 or Claim 5 or Claim 6 or Claim 7 or Claim 8 that may be adapted to suit children by including pictures to illustrate the words in the source language and the translated equivalents in the target language and by listing a reduced vocabulary specifically adapted to specific age groups.
14 An information carrier as claimed in Claim 13 that may be adapted to suit users with specific interests by listing a reduced vocabulary specifically adapted to a specific field of expertise or a specific profession.
15 An information carrier as claimed in Claim I or Claim 2 or Claim 3 or Claim 4 or Claim 5 or Claim 6 or Claim 7 or Claim 8 that may be adapted to be included in traditional bilingual dictionaries, travel guides, languages teaching books and school textbooks, brochures, handbooks, diaries, calendars or on translation sites on the internet.
