Description
Handheld Electronic Communication Device Control System the invcnti>n
which Is the subleet of this application relates to an improvement in the utlisation of hand held electronic devices such as, for example, mobile telephones, remote control devices and the like and, in general terms, eleetrcnc devices which include a "front face" with a series <>f spaced alphanumeric keys by which the user can operate the device.
11 hand held devices are increasingly provided with a range of functions which can be selected by the user and, when a particular function is selected the operation of the same can be controlled by the user. ( 'nventic>nally the r>peratic>n of the selected function requires the manipulation of one or a number of keys selected by the user from a range of spaced keys provided >n a front surface of the device. 'I'ypieally each key carries printing therec>n to inclieate to the user which of the alphanumeric characters can be selected by the use of each key.
I'ypcally, in order to mintmise the usage of space, which is at a premium in handheld devices, each key allows the selection of a number of characters by the selective use of the key. I;or example one key may represent "a, b, c, 1" with one depression >f the key providing the display of "a" on the display screen, two uses >f the key in cluick succession generating "b" >n the display screen and so >n.
the provision >f the spaced array >f keys on a front face is theref>rc the widespread conventional approach to allow user control anti Input of instructions for specific functions and, nLILecI in many cases it will c<'ntinuc tic be so. However this system does have problems. ()nc problem Is that as the demand for the handLclLI clevces to be smaller In size continues, sc> the keys tend to be spaced closer together and/or be smaller in size.
( l his may save space but does make the keys more difficult to identify and use accurately as the size and space between the same Is nsuffcicut. l his problem is of particular rclcvancc to th'sc functions such as for cxamtlc the gencrati<,n and sending 'f text messages via a mobile phone where a relatively large usage of the keys is required to gcncratc the message. The problem can Icad t' incorrect rncssages bong sent but more Mordantly the need for the user to concentrate entirely on Uncrating messages via the keys can Icad to their concentration being diverted from their other activities such as looking where they arc going driving ctc and thcref're Icad to danger for the Persian using the device and/ ->r those in their vicinity.
While it is known to provide tine or two buttons fin the edge faces 'f the device these luttons arc typically t> allow the switching on or off of the device and are provided as additional functional switches for relatively Infrequent use rather than as alternative keys to those provided or1 the front face of the device. l he aim 'f the present Invention is to pr>vtde an improvement to hand held devices which allows the selection of alphanumeric characters and/or other control functions and instructions for the device in a manner which Is more ergonomically useful to the user and thereby improves the overall usage of the Llevce.
In a first aspect of the invention there is provided a hand held electronic device said device having a display screen and/or keys mounted on a front face; a rear face and edge faces spacing the front and rear faces apart said device provided with a range 'f user selectable functions and key input means to allow the user to select a function and/or input data for the device and wherein there is prcvdeLI at at least one edge and for the rear
face, a series of key input areas for selective actuation by the user In the input of data to the device.
Preferably the key Input areas are proviLleLI fin two opposed edge faces and the rear face <:' f the device.
Typically the device is relatively elongate In shape and the key Input areas arc positioned fin the two elongate edge faces and the rear face.
In tine embodiment the key input areas are defined by a series of spaced keys or buttons, typically in a linear spaced configuration and the selective depression of the same causes the generation <if an input command for the device.
In an alternative embodiment the key Input areas are defined by a linear strip or strips and the selective depression or other form of actuation off the strip at a selected location(s) causes the generation <if Input data for the device.
1 n both embodiments, the key input areas are defined visually fair the user by printing or the application of symbols can or near the.amc. locally each of the key input areas are multi functional in that selective actuation off the same can cause particular identifiable input data to be generated for the device.
Typically the key input areas are provided on the edge and/or rear faces at ergonomically useful locations, for example in those l'cattons where the user's finger tips normally grip the edge and/'r rear faces Off the device in normal use. 'I'his therefore allows the user to actuate the key input areas while maintaining their grip on the device.
( In tine embodiment more key input areas can be provided along 'nc edge face than the other.
In tine embodiment the key input areas are provided as integral parts of the clevcc at the time of purchase.
In an alternative embodiment the key input areas are provided as part of a carrier, said carrier provided with engagement means to allow the same to be pained, nto a handheld device such that the key Input areas overlie the respective edge and/'r rear faces of the device to lie in the required position for use. In tine cmbotliment the carrier also includes a p'wer supply therctn or I is provided with attachment means to allow the same to ecnneet try a socket in the hand held device and draw power for the same. l he carrier is also provide with data communication means to allow the data generated by the selective key Input areas actuations tr' be input try the device.
In <'nc embodiment all 'r some of the key input areas can cluplcate functions which can be performed by the depression of keys Em the front face calf the device but it is founLI that the USC 'f the key input areas in accordance with the invention are more advantageous to the user In many circumstances.
In ()nc eml:>odiment the key Input areas can be pre-prc>grammed lay the manufacturer to be able to control certain functions of the devec. Alternatively the user can pr<gramme certain key Input areas t, perform specific functions of the device in ace>rdancc with their own requirements.
l he provision of the key Input areas In the manner described, although nest necessarily allowing the control of all of the functions 'f the hand held electronic device, does allow those
functions which are most commonly used, or most difficult to perform in certain circumstances Or which meet tither criteria, to be pcrfortned more conveniently by the user, and In a more natural manner thereby improving the utility Off the device and rcducng inconvenience and the possibility ' f repetitive strain injury t> the user. al Specific c mbodiments Of the invention are now described in accordance with the accompanying diagrams wherein; lectures l a and b illustrate two perspective views of a mobile telephone in accordance with cane embodiment ' f the invention; l;igure 2 illustrates a conventional mobile telephone; Figure 3 illustrates a carrier in accordance with a second embodiment >f the invention; and lecture 4 illustrates the carrier of Iigure 3 attached f>r use with the mol>le telephone of Figure 9.
