Abstract

An automatic plunger for coolant feed consists of a main body 4 with internal moving piston(s) 2 with suitable elastomers fitted where a seal is required to avoid leakage and therefore loss of pressure. The piston 2 is moved by an external force so that it locates onto a surface and pressure is maintained in order that liquid can be forced through the centre of the piston 2 to deliver this same liquid to the point of interface. The piston 2, which is fitted with a spring 9, returns to the start position when the external force is released. This plunger could be used for instance on machine tools where high pressure coolant is required to be delivered through a cutting tool and would operate automatically through the machine control functions thereby eliminating the need for physically changing hose connections.

Description

( Patent application. For AUTOMATIC PLUNGER FOR ULTRA HIGH PRESSURE
COOLANT I - D ON MACHINE TOOLS.
Background to invention.
Most machine tools require a coolant system for lubrication and cooling purposes this typically is either a water/oil mix or a neat cutting oil. Over the past 10-15 years high pressure (generally considered to be over 20-bar) has become more desirable and in many instances is used in conjunction with low pressure this usually involves the connection or disconnection of hoses as many turrets or tool holding devices on the machines do not have the capability to handle high pressure coolant.
The assembly was designed to overcome the need to physically connect and disconnect pipe work when a change of coolant pressure is called for thereby eliminating the need to stop the machine and consequently increasing production and Improving safety.
Description.
A mechanical device manufactured in metal with elastomer components having a plunger which is moved either electrically, mechanically or hydraulically to make a seal on a tool holding device and capable of transferring high pressure coolant between 0-500 bar from the plunger to the tool holding device.
