Abstract
A valve actuator comprises a synchronous electric motor 10 having an output shaft 12 with one end coupled to a reduction gearbox, within a housing of the motor 10, and an opposite end provided with a radially extending drive dog 18. The drive dog 18 extends into one bore with a rib 32 of a coupling component 30 which has another bore or recess 38 that receives a spindle of a valve. When the motor 10 is energised, the shaft 12 rotates until dog 18 contacts rib 32 which in turn rotates the coupling component 30. After the motor has been de-energised, the coupling component 30 can continue to be rotated by a manual control until an opposite side of the rib 32, contacts the dog 18, thus there is lost motion that allows the output to be moved beyond an extent that the motor 10 has been driven. Coupling component 30 has teeth 36 which engage with a gear portion (42, fig 1) of a thumbwheel (44) formed with grooves, knurls etc.
