Abstract

Ratchet gearing.-In frictional or positive feed mechanism, such for example as the reversible gear described in Specification 228,329 for slueing the cutter member in coal-cutting machines, or for haulage purposes, forward and reverse friction detents D, D<1> for engagement with the feed wheel B carry pins 8, on which are adapted to bear the heads of rods 2 under the influence of compression springs F. The rods pass with freedom through slots in the framing 5 so that they may be manipulated to bring lugs 9 on the rods behind lugs 10 on the framing and raise the rod heads from contact with the detents. When a lug 9 is disengaged from its lug 10, for instance by one of a pair of levers G actuated alternately by the coal cutter member at each end of its travel, the spring F causes engagement between the rod head and its detent, and the detent is disengaged from the wheel B immediately the drive restarts and relieves the jamming action on the detent. The wheel B is thus constantly oscillated by the driving-pawl and the load, and no feed takes place. Spring-actuated bell-crank letters may replace the rods, or, in a further modification, arms on the detents may be actuated by springs which are either released or compressed to bear upon the arms. A single rod with a T-head acting on both detents may replace the two rods shown in the Figure.
