Forcing gas into liquid.-A diffuser comprises a number of laminµ between the adjacent faces of which the air is forced into the surrounding liquid. The lamina 1, Fig. 1, has a recess 4 on one side, from which lead holes 5 to the other side. One face is provided with grooves 2 or both faces are so provided. A number of such laminµ are clamped between an air inlet head 10, Fig. 15, and end members 11 of which only one is shown. Air is distributed by the grooves 4 and holes 5 and enters the liquid through the grooves 2. Stoppers 16 may be removed to allow flushing of the interior. The clamps may be loosened and air or water forced between the laminµ to scour their faces. In a modification, each lamina consists of a number of strips of waterproof paper made into a pack of 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch thickness. These are provided with holes 5. Fig. 3, through which and over the upper part of the lamina a cord or thread 3 is laced, the spaces between the cords forming the exit passages for the gas. A cord 7 is laid along the end and bottom faces to prevent escape at these faces. The strips may alternatively be of non-ferrous metal or galvanized steel, and may be secured together by wire. In another modification the laminµ consist of plain metal strips, separated by slotted strips of paper or rubber, or covered with cement in which passages are impressed by a stencil or otherwise. The passages on the meeting faces of two laminµ may be in staggered relation. The laminµ may be of cement which may be reinforced bv wires: the passages may be formed by the natural roughness of the surfaces. The laminµ may also consist of corrugated plates which do not quite fit, the outer corrugations of the end plates being filled in with cement. In a modified diffuser, the laminµ 1, Fig. 22, are clamped between the two half-sections 18 of a conduit by a bolt 20. Modified conduits of various sections are described.
