Abstract

A beam 1, such as a ring beam or ridge beam of a conservatory, is adjustably fixed to an existing wall 2 by means of a first support member 6 fixed to the wall but moveably engaged, as by sliding in channel 7, with the end of the beam, and a second support member 11 fixed to the wall and fixable at an adjustable position with respect to the beam; e.g. the member 11 may be a threaded rod passing through a bracket 10 fixed to the beam, and having nuts 12 to set the position of the beam at a desired distance from the wall.

Description

( 2392679
BUILDING AND SUPPORT METHOD AND APPARATUS THEREFOR
This invention relates to a building for being erected adjacent to and supported by a supporting structure such as a wall The invention also relates to a method and apparatus for supporting part of a building adjacent to a supporting structure. More particularly, but not exclusively, the invention relates to a method and apparatus for securing a ring beam and/or ridge beam of a conservatory to a house wall A conservatory may have a double-pitched roof, e.g a Victorian or Edwardian style roof, comprising a ridge beam connected at one end to a house wall and extending out away from the wall. Roof glazing bars or pre-glazed panels slope down from the ridge beam to the eaves of the conservatory where they are supported on the tops of glazed wall panels The glazed wall panels usually sit on the tops of dwarf walls, often of beck. Also, to give better support to the roof and avoid pressure down onto the glazed wall panels, a ring beam is usually provided between the outer ends of the roof glazing bars and the tops of the glazed wall panels The ring beam extends right round the eaves of the conservatory and Is fixed at each end to the house wall.
It Is known to fix the end of the ridge beam and/or each end of the ring beam to the house wall by way of a metal bracket and screws engaging the wall and the respective beam. A problem however is that the wall of a house is rarely flat and vertical and/or it may be found that, after erection of the conservatory to the stage of fixing the beam(s), the latter is or are not exactly square to he house wall. Accordingly, one object of the invention is to provide an Improved means and method for securing the ridge beam
( and/or ring beam of a conservatory to a house wall that Inexpensively but effectively ameliorates the problem referred to.
Aspects of the invention, to be described correspond to claims 1, 4 and 5 For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be earned into effect, reference Will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, In which.
figure 1 Is a diagrammatic top view of part of a mean of a conservatory roof and fixing means securing the end of the beam to a house wall, and Figure 2 is section on line 1111 in Figure 1 The drawing shows the house end of a beam 1, i.e. a ring beam or ridge beam, of a conservatory (not otherwise shown).
The beam shown has a simple cross-secton for Illustrating this invention. In reality, it Is likely to be more complex with design features for receiving the glazing bars and/or glazed panels, gutter sections, sealing strips and, of course, decorative design features. To fix the end of the beam 1 to the house wall 2, there is provided a first L-shaped bracket 3 One limb 4 of the bracket 3 is fixed to the house wall 2 by a bolt 5 of the kind having an integral expanding wall fixing (not shown). This fixing comprises claws (not shown) which expand as bolt 5 is turned. The other limb 6 of bracket 3 Is slidably engaged in a matching aperture 7 extending along inside the beam at the bottom or
near one side thereof. The bolt 5 could be replaced with a screwed stud and nut (not shown) At the top or at the other side of the beam, there is a further L-shaped bracket 8 One limb 9 of this bracket is fixed to the side of the beam. The other limb 10 extends out sideways from the side of the beam There is a hole 20 In this limb 10 and a threaded stud 11 is engaged in the hole. The stud 11 Is fixed to the house wall by having one end form part of an expanding wall fixing similar to the fixing forming part of bolt 5.
Two nuts 12 are engaged on stud 11 one each side of limb 10 of bracket 8 To fix the beam 1 to the house wall the stud 11, bolt 5 and bracket 3 are fitted to the wall and one of the nuts 12 is fitted on stud 11 The beam Is then fitted so that aperture 7 Is located over limb 6 of bracket 3 and the hole in limb 10 is engaged on the stud 11 The second nut 12 Is then engaged on stud 11. The first nut 12 Is then set to give the correct position of the beam relative to the house wall and the second nut tightened down to hold the beam in place via bracket 8.
As discussed, the beam shown may be a ridge beam or a ring beam or indeed any other suitable item being fixed to a house wall. Aperture 7 could be replaced by an open sldeway (not shown) formed at one side of beam. Instead of stud 11 and bolt 5 comprising parts of respective expanding wall fixings, there could be items mortared Into the wall or they could be fixed in holes in the wall by adhesive

Claims (4)
